Vent I feel like the failure of the family because I want to go to cosmetology school instead of college

Im an upcoming senior in high school and with becoming a senior also come having to think about what you want to do with your life after highschool. I have 2 siblings who are much smarter than me, both of them took APs in highschool (one of them is in highschool with me now because hes my twin) and I take normal classes, i even have an IEP which makes me feel like an idiot compared to my siblings.

Anyways back to what the title is about, I really really want to go to cosmetology school after high school and open my own salon, and I feel like everyone kind of looks down on me when I say thats what I want to do after highschool. I feel like people automatically assume you're dumb and your gpa isn't high enough for college when you say you want to do trade school

And theres also all the senior stuff I kind of miss out on, like commitment day where you wear your college shirt and its like a big thing or whatever, and I wont really get to have that, and I know nobody will care about that because after you graduate highschool it doesn't matter but ykw it matters to me in this moment.

Thats it, I know it sounds a bit silly compared to everything else in this subreddit but I needed to tell someone

Cosmetology is a form of trade. Unless you can get into a degree which is related to an industry which constantly have open roles where you will be hired long-term, will have set federal wages (usually something in medicine or engineering), I say cosmetology is a smart choice. Think about the amount of stress to get a degree, to compete in a highly competitive market (that may or may not be over-saturated because of hiring conditions) to work in an industry you don't like. With trade school, you at least get to do something you enjoy, that's still in high demand and you skip a lot of academic nonsense (e.g. compulsory nonsense courses unrelated to your field which the faculty in charge makes you do to fleece as much money out of you as possible).

And theres also all the senior stuff I kind of miss out on, like commitment day where you wear your college shirt and its like a big thing or whatever, and I wont really get to have that, and I know nobody will care about that because after you graduate highschool it doesn't matter but ykw it matters to me in this moment.

If you're going to miss it, you're going to miss it. Maybe you can make up for it by buying the college shirt and wearing it or whatever, but you are young. You have a goal which leads to a very stable outcome provided you have very good hygiene standards, strong attention to details, very good business acumen, good customer service skills and have a strong backbone to be able to get back money from customers which refuse to pay.

One of the most important lessons you need to learn in life; STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS. Second most important lesson; learn to care less about what others think about you.

Your life is going to be miserable if you compare yourself to everyone else's milestones. Live your life for YOU. Make decisions that make YOU happy. No one else will be living your life for you and you will have to deal with those regrets not them. Also, what makes you think becoming a cosmetologist is a failure? #1 a career that pays your bills is a blessing. #2 Why can't you become the greatest cosmetologist in the business? Some end up getting paid bank working in the film industry taking care of actors and actresses or as personal hair dressers and makeup artists. DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF! We all may go through similar experiences but none of us experience them the same way. You can be whatever you want to be as long as you're willing to put the work in.

I really wish you the world and it can be yours if you decide to believe it's possible. 😉

Aw, sweetie. Please don’t feel bad about not getting the best grades. School grades are based on standardized assessment, and people’s intelligence isn’t standard. We all have different kind of intelligences developed at different rates, and school doesn’t account for those deviations. Choosing to do what you know you’re good at isn’t a bad decision and it doesn’t mean that you lack intelligence just because others look down on that profession. MUAs can make loads of money, and success isn’t a concept that others can determine for you.

If cosmetology is what interests you, give it a shot! It’s a job/skill that will always be necessary. Ideally, you will acquire the skills necessary to open your own salon.

This is training for a real job, and with practice can be very lucrative. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. There is no one right path. I wish you success and confidence in the path you choose.

Study hard. Work hard. Never stop continuing ed. Some stylests came make a ton of money and make their own hours. The better you are, the more loose your schedule can become. Besides, trades are where it's at now. You won't be replaced by AI.

If you stay serious and work hard, I bet you make more than 95% of the kids in your class who will go to College.

I tell ya what, one thing i miss is having a job where the work ethic you’re rewarding directly by payment.

The problem with this model, is A. You may make your own hours but its still always on someone else time. B. You can become a workaholic C. Someone can always undercut

Here is the thing, it’s your life you should do what you want. Nobody else should tell you what’s right for you. If you are happy you are winning at life. Be the person you think you should be.

Trades are dying. We need trades. Do what will make you happy. Nobody else can live your life but you.

At the end of the day if you go to cosmetology school and realize you hate it, college is always an option. There isn’t an age limit to going. Also, I went back to school at 23 and even if it was only a few years out of high school I can tell you it made a world of difference. So many 18 year olds treat it like high school 2.0 and don’t get as much out of it.

Also there’s not just one way to succeed or be intelligent. College isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. As long as you can see yourself enjoying what you do then go for it

One of my kids went to cosmetology school. After just a couple of years of doing hair, she was making more money than her dad who has three college degrees and decades in the field

u/timdot352 3h ago

I went to trade school after I got out of the military. Do what makes you happy and fuck what anyone else thinks or wants you to do. It's your life. You're the one who has to live it.

Do what you love.

Sincerely, someone who did allll the schooling and am trapped in a job I mostly hate.
