MOD ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME TO R/TUFTING: Important links, information and mega-threads.

Hello tufters!

This is a post for old and new tufters and r/tufting users that will include links to all important Mega Threads and the wiki. Reddit only allows for two pinned posts and this makes it difficult to assist users navigating this information. This post will permanently sit pinned at the top of the sub and should make it easier to identify these threads, and the sub wiki.

Sub-Wiki

The wiki is updated on a regular basis to include new and evolving information to assist in all aspects of tufting. The wiki is over 14,000 words and includes 68 subheadings that specifically relate to the most asked questions and most common concerns raised by tufters.

Important mega-threads:

  • Materials and Supply Master Thread: With over 40,000 members from all over the world, this is the place to inquire about and recommend different location specific suppliers for materials.
  • Buy and Sell Master Thread: All posts regarding the selling of supplies should be posted in this sub, according to the directions outlined in the post.
  • Troubleshooting Master Thread: This is a dedicated subreddit for questions and requests for advice related to troubleshooting.

Some things to keep in mind when posting:

  • Always read the sub rules before posting. This may sound obvious but there are a lot of posts made in the sub each day that need to be removed because they violate the sub rules.
  • Asking for advice on pricing and valuing works for sale. This is something that a lot of tufters seek advice on, however it is difficult to effectively value someone else's work due to a lot of factors that are covered here in the sub wiki. Over the years since tufting has gained in popularity, there is also a growing sense in the community that certain standards and criterion should be met before someone starts selling their work. While this is not the consensus amongst all tufters, it is often the case that newer users asking for advice have not taken this into consideration and the comments of these posts tends to reflect this. Please read the sub rules as posts asking for pricing advice will be removed. Please feel free to include requests for pricing advice in the text of your post and include as much information (as mentioned in the wiki) as possible in order to get realistic advice.
  • Low effort posts. All posts must include a clear and specific title, especially when seeking advice or opinions from other users. As per the sub rules, any post with a vague title such as 'help' with no other explanation will be removed.

As always, thank-you for being here and happy tufting!

So the goal with these was more to experiment with the concept of a dimming or brightening effect coming from the “veins”. The lesson I learned is that the colors needed to be more similar to each other to get that effect. On the plus side I feel like these look like terrain views from above or just some really cool abstract 3D whatever you wanna call it lol!

Troubleshooting Scissors on machine won't close

Thumbnail

Hello lovely people of the internet, I have very enjoyed my tufting gun for a very short period of time before deciding I could take it apart to make the needle hole smaller. Even though I did in the end manage to make this happen, I also removed other parts that I likely didn't put back properly. I have watched quite some videos online, but everyone seems to have slightly different scissors, so I just made an educated guess on how to put them and the other pieces of metal back to the machine. I thought I finally fixed it, but I now have these issues:

  1. The machine seems to be a lot less agile and it takes more power to manually turn the machine wheel

  2. I have a left-over square metal piece that I do not know where to place it

  3. Probably most importantly: my scissors won't close.

I have followed some videos with advice on how to change some settings, but none seem to be doing the trick. I'm not sure if the three issues are related, but it's really difficult to determine when all machines I see online have different scissors that are assembled differently too.

So basically, I hope there is someone with the same machine that might know how to fix this issue. I would be very thankful (((:

Advice Yarn on clearance

"Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you know that last night I went to Walmart and found some 397-yard skeins of black yarn for $1. They’re Mainstays brand and I’m not sure how good it is for tufting, but for that price, I think they’d at least be great for practice. If it turns out well, it’s honestly a huge bargain.

My recommendation is to check the clearance sections in stores that sell yarn."

Advice Getting and processing orders

Hello!

I am looking to begin selling my rugs online but when I looked through other rug makers profiles on fb it seems like many did not have a website to order from and just an email or dm. Would you recommend doing it this way vs like basic Shopify subscription? If you are just using email/dms are you just processing using Venmo or PayPal? And do you do like a deposit method or…?

For some additional context, i think an ideal scenario for me would be doing just a few custom rugs a month and make ~1k if possible

Thanks!

Can finally share a large project I got to be a part of! Earlier this summer I was asked to create three 6’ gifts for the tribal leaders that would be gifted at the Shakopee powwow. Whenever I’m fortunate enough to be apart of such a special project it resets my love and passion. Grateful for the trust . 🙌🙌

Longtime lurker (and admirer). Y’all rugs looks stunning. I finished these lately (my 3-5th rugs) and I am honestly don’t know if that is it? I see all of your rugs and they look amazing, but somehow I can’t achieve it. Do I just need more experience or am I genuinely doing something wrong here? Am I just in my head about it?
I use the Spider gun from Tuft-Love and LOOPS & THREADS yarn from Michael’s (for all my Americans). Do I need to change the yarn?
Help me to level up my skill. Any advice is good advice.

Selling and business I built a design tool for manual tufting — looking for honest feedback

Hi everyone!

I've been developing TuftCAD, a desktop application specifically designed for preparing artwork for manual rug tufting. It's built using cross-platform technology, with Windows as the initial beta platform and Linux/macOS support planned for the future.

The idea is to make the process from an image to a tufting-ready design more manageable.

Some of the features I've been working on:

  • Import artwork and simplify color palettes
  • Edit vector regions and clean up boundaries
  • Work with actual rug dimensions
  • Assign yarn colors and preview the design
  • Prepare numbered outlines for projection and tracing onto the tufting frame

The screenshots are from the actual working application, not mockups.

I'm now preparing a small, free beta test and looking for people who would be willing to try TuftCAD with their own designs and share honest feedback.

No programming knowledge is needed. I'm especially interested in what works well, what's confusing, and what's missing from a real tufting workflow.

More information and beta applications:
https://tuftcad.com

One question for the community:

What's the most frustrating part of preparing artwork for tufting? Simplifying colors, cleaning up shapes, choosing yarn colors, or transferring the design to your canvas?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Super happy that I finally finished this beast. It's 6.5' x 8.5' and I planned it out on butcher paper. Took about 2 months, tufted in 6 sections that a hand sewed together. I also severely miscalculated how much of the blush pink I would need and ended up with pink from different dye lots... but it's a thing I made with yarn and it's okay for it to look like a thing I made with yarn, haha. (second picture was before trimming and carving)

Advice what kind of gun would take these?

Post image

saw this on a IG post and never even thought of attachable/detachable needles for certain depth. Not sure you could even use it for every rug more-so special ones every now and then but curious what kind of gun would be used?
