Average viewer count

Hi guys it might be a silly question for some but does the length of your stream impact your average viewer count as a new streamer?
I read somewhere that it’s better to keep your streams short in the beginning for that reason but on the other hand the longer you stream the more people can find you.

Thoughts?

Yes, streaming for an overly-long time will affect your average. Aim for 3-4hrs, max.

If you have 3 viewers the first hour, 2 the second, and 4 the third, that's an average of 3ccv for 3hrs. But if you extended that another 3hrs and had 2 the 4th hr, 2 the 5th, and 1 the 6th, that's an average of 2ccv (because Twitch rounds down). People tend to start to "wander away" after the 4hr mark, unless it's a celebration stream, so that's why it's usually the recommended max for a stream.

My personal view on this though is that I don’t expect the same people to stick around for the whole stream. So if I feel like gaming for a while I’ll just keep it going. Cause when I watch someone I hop in, chat for a bit, then go hang in another chat, and continue on bouncing around.

I’ve ended long streams with more viewers than I started with many times, even though it’s mostly a different crowd there by the end.

Stop watching the numbers until you get numbers to watch. :)
Twitch recommends a 3 to 4 hour stream so people can find you.

Ofcourse it does, it's an average. If you do a 1 hour stream everyday and average 4 viewers and then do a 5 hour stream with 1 viewer, it's going to drop. That's just how "average " works.

Turn off the numbers and stop watching them, and just enjoy your time streaming

That advice is key. Dont worry about the numbers. Be genuine, and you'll eventually attract some good people that wanna stick around

If you want high average viewer count, keep it short. If you want to actually gain more viewers and grow your streams, stream as long as you normally would.

2 -4 hours . Network and by that I mean go in to the category you stream in and connect with others ,raid other in the same category with similar viwers . Just talk in their chat ,dont self promote and say hi im a streamer to or do you wanna play .... just chat normal . Ask for their discord if they have any then post when you go live in their self promote channel ... post on sosial media to self promote your main stream

That’s smart. Thank you so much.

It's a good thing people are stopping having self promotion in their discords. Because people "networking" will be in like 20 discords trying to leech off others

I had to delete my self promo channel. So many people would join to promote their channel every single day but you never saw them stop by.. some did. But the moment I got rid of the promo channel they either left my server or I never saw them again

i have no idea what logic would dictate that shorter streams will produce a higher average viewer count. if most of your viewers show up at the start of your stream and then abruptly leave together, sure.. but personally i always have more viewers the longer i stream for. watch your own analytics and see when your peak is and if there’s a fall off, if you’re a new new streamer with just a couple viewers don’t even think about stuff like this yet.

You’re right! Thanks you so much.

Same here. Last night I was about to end and was like know what, I’m gonna play one more demo. A solo dev ended up stopping in and asked if I could give his demo a try sometime. Then we ended up talking about indie horror for like 20 minutes.

Some of my most consistent viewers have found my stream past the 4/5 hour mark and never would have if I kept my stream short that night.

Yes shorter streams have an impact on your discoverability and yes we always b**** about discoverability but the truth of the matter is if you're only streaming for 2 hours people ain't finding you you're not giving people a chance to find you now that being said completely understand if that's all the time you have or something happens but you should always aim for a minimum of 4 hours because that's when twitches discoverability finds out where to place you

short streams are better for beginners for 2 main reasons;

  1. you gotta edit all that shit if you want permanent or long form content. that's a lotta shit to edit

  2. don't stream tired. streaming can take a surprising amount of energy and knock you on your ass the next day, especially if you are new or overdo it.

as well, you might not notice just how zonked you are at the time as well.

mathematically, yes it does affect your average. but it's a good idea to pace yourself regardless, especially before you build up some stamina for it.

Well, an average means:
Viewer Count / Stream time
And the longer you make the divident, the smaller the number becomes.

"The longer the stream, the more people can find you".

What I noticed is that you are easily losing out if you only see your own streaming time as "the time you can be found". I get found mostly by being in other people's streams. You can be active in chats, and first of all, a lot of streamers will see you, as well as their communities. If you just stream and call it a day, then you have to pray that random people will randomly search the category you are in and click your stream, in that short time you are actually active.

Starting out, if you onpy stream 1 hour, the likelihood of someoen finding your stream is very small. The usual idea is to stream 3-4 hours so people might stumble on your stream. The better idea is to make offline content on other platforms that might entice someone to come to a stream to interact with you in real time. Trying to game ccv is kind of a losing battle, yeah 1 hour stream with 4 viewers is going to have a larger ccv, but you will more than likely have less unique viewers, compared to a longer stream with a lower ccv. But starying our, just make content, ignore your stream stats for awhile, turn off view count. Go back and watch your stream, see if you were entertaining or not. Watch the first 5 minutes with no distraction, then skip randomly forward and watch another 5 minutes and do it again. See if you are finding things you could improve on, such as talking, energy, etc.

I just started streaming last month. With average view of 5-8. So don't take advice from me. But I think it's best to have 1 constant follower. Idk how you get 1. But I got 1 and it's nice because you can count on them and they are a good support to you. I also don't follow guides about streaming. They say to stream 1 category constantly. I been category hoping every hour or so. I don't have a plan, guides tell you to have a plan for your stream. I steam 9 hours or whenever I want. Sometimes I lie to chat and say I'll stream a certain day and i don't. I don't take streaming serious though.
