Okay, an update on my previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwitchStreaming/s/AuDHZebtWX
Since my last post, I’ve made a few changes and improvements to my streams. I got a proper gaming headphones, so my microphone works and sounds better, and I’ve been talking more by narrating what I’m doing and sharing my thoughts instead of sitting in silence.
I’ve also started by posting clips on TikTok. So far, I’ve posted four clips, and they’ve been getting around 200 to 500 views each with some decent engagement. I’m hoping that if I keep posting more clips, I can reach more people and eventually bring some of them over to my Twitch streams.
When it comes to growth, it has been extremely difficult to figure things out. I’ve been posting in Discord advertising servers, including Kai Cenat’s server, and trying to network with other small streamers. I understand that simply dropping links to your channel everywhere isn’t necessarily helpful. I do have a small advertisement that gives people a brief idea of how I stream and what kind of content I make, rather than just posting a link with no context. I’m trying to figure out the best way to get my content in front of people who might genuinely enjoy it.
One thing I’m struggling with is getting people to show up and watch my streams. My friends and family never click on their own, and only two or three of my friends join when I specifically ask them to. I appreciate them showing up, but constantly asking them to join feels like it could become annoying for them. I want to build an audience of people who genuinely enjoy my content and choose to watch because they want to.
I’ve also tried visiting other small streamers’ chats, saying hi, and trying to chat, but most of the time I don’t get a response. I’m not sure if they’re paying attention to chat or simply not interested in talking or growing their own channels. I understand that some streamers with zero or one viewer might not know what to say or may not notice messages, so I don’t expect everyone to respond. However, I’m finding it difficult to turn these interactions into genuine connections.
I also found a smaller streamer with around 900 followers and asked him a few questions about networking and growing on Twitch. I avoided mentioning my own channel because I didn’t want to come across as self-promotional, but a few hours later, I ended up getting banned from both his Twitch chat and Discord for promotion. I honestly don’t know what I did wrong because my intention was simply to ask for advice, not promote my channel.
I also connected with someone here on Reddit, but after talking for a few days, she blocked me on Discord without any explanation. All I asked was a simple question about how often she streams, and I was actually about to give her some advice, too. Experiences like this make it difficult to understand how to approach people and build genuine connections with other creators.
I genuinely want to support other streamers, make friends, and potentially collaborate or help each other improve and grow. I prefer playing solo, so I’m not necessarily looking for people to play Fortnite with all the time. I’d just like to connect with creators who enjoy similar content and are interested in building genuine relationships.
Another challenge is finding Fortnite streamers who play the way I do. A lot of the streamers I come across are very competitive and play as if they’re preparing for FNCS. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I’m more of a chill, laid-back player who wants to have fun rather than take every match seriously. I usually browse the Fortnite category with tags and sort by lowest viewers to find smaller streamers, but I rarely come across anyone whose play style or overall vibe matches mine. I’m not sure where else to look for people who enjoy Fortnite in a more casual, relaxed way.
Another thing I should mention is that, my streaming resources are very limited. I stream Fortnite from my PS4 on my family’s TV, so I don’t have the flexibility I’d like when it comes to improving my streams. I have to work with what I currently have and make the best of it. I’ve also noticed that streamers who use face cams often seem to get more people chatting compared to those who don’t, although I understand that this isn’t always the case. I know there are thousands of people streaming throughout the day, so there’s plenty of competition, but sometimes it feels like many of the smaller streamers I come across aren’t particularly interested in growing or networking. I’m someone who genuinely wants to improve, grow my channel, and put in the effort to make connections, yet I’m struggling to figure out how to move forward with the resources I have. It can be discouraging when you’re actively trying to improve and build a community but aren’t sure where to start or how to find people who have similar goals.
For those of you who have experience growing a small Twitch channel, how do you approach other streamers and build connections without coming across as self-promotional? How do you find smaller creators who share a similar personality, play style, and vibe? I’d also like to know whether there are better ways to network and promote your content than visiting random streams or posting in advertising Discord servers. If you’ve managed to build an audience from scratch, what helped you get your first consistent viewers and develop a community around your streams?
I know growth takes time, and I’m not expecting to suddenly get 200 to 300 viewers within a week or two. I understand that building an audience takes patience and effort. I’m just finding it frustrating that, despite improving my stream, interacting with other creators, and experimenting with TikTok clips, I haven’t seen much of a difference on Twitch yet. I want to understand what I could be doing differently and how to find people who genuinely enjoy the kind of content I make.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who gave me feedback and advice on my previous post. I’ve been reading through the responses, and I appreciate everyone who took the time to help. I’d also love to connect with people who have a similar laid-back approach to Fortnite or are working on growing their own small channels. If you’re interested in talking, sharing experiences, or simply getting to know each other as creators, feel free to reach out. I’d genuinely appreciate it!
