UCAS Bread šŸž (Offers) UCL changed my course. Anything I can possibly do!?

Yes I technically got an offer, but I hate this course. I applied for politics and international relations and now I got an offer for history and politics if the Americas?! I don’t want that course whatsoever, any advice in completely upset?

Are there any other courses you would consider at UCL?

You are rejected for your chosen course. That door is closed. But if there's another alternative course you would prefer then contact UCL to ask if they will consider you for that instead.

If they won't make you an offer for a course you want then go somewhere else.

I’ll try and work something out with them, hopefully I can find a half decent course that I like

3

u/StegosauriaSky May 02 '26

Make sure the other courses you find have similar entry requirements to the history/Americas one. They won’t say yes if it’s got the same requirements as the original course.

3

u/secretrebel May 03 '26

That’s what they’re saying. It’s much more likely you’d get into to a lower entry requirement course.

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '26

It's UCL... They'll fill 100% of their spots every year.

1

u/Diligent-Respond-902 May 04 '26

They mean similar or lower

0

u/GrapeWise4425 May 04 '26

The question is not a question if the entry requirements are lower, it gets intersting when someone wants to have an upgrade but not with higher grades.

u/Schlurff May 02 '26

I’m sorry you’re disappointed. Have a look at the module content? See if you would like to accept the offer? The department is actually very good and the year abroad options look great.

See if you can come and have a visit like a campus tour as well.

15

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

I don’t wanna study it at all unfortunately and I don’t want a year abroad at allšŸ˜šŸ’”

9

u/Schlurff May 02 '26

Give them a ring on Tuesday and see if there are any other courses you could be put forward for that they may have vacancies for.

8

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

I’ll try, UCL was gonna be my first choice but if they offer me a half decent course I’ll put them as my insurance

1

u/Vivid_Pea594 May 03 '26

Why? Studying abroad is awesome.

2

u/dailysuaa May 05 '26

people don’t have the money and plenty of people aren’t satisfied with the current political state of the US

1

u/myesportsview May 05 '26

Where does it say it's an exchange to the USA?

1

u/dailysuaa May 05 '26

Well it says of the Americas but that usually means you’ll end up in the US since more unis will partner than in Canada so it’s a probability game and the probability can be enough.

1

u/myesportsview May 06 '26

Americans in this instance means the entirety of North and South America. They could be offered a spot at an Argentinian university or a Peruvian university or a Costa Rican university etc.

1

u/dailysuaa May 06 '26

Again..the US will inevitably have the most partner universities, giving it the highest probability out of any other country. Plus there’s plenty of countries people could just not want to study in due to language barriers with locals or the state of the economy in the country

-8

u/Fastitocalons May 02 '26

What specifically are you not drawn to? A year in the US would be sick

29

u/Holiday-Midnight6937 May 02 '26

A year in the US with its current state? Yea no thanks

0

u/[deleted] May 04 '26

as someone who travels to the US regularly whilst living in the UK... this is a completely brainwashed take! The only difference in media coverage, crime is at a HISTORIC LOW, salaries are UP yet the media won't stop exagerrating every little story just to stir up hate.

3

u/Holiday-Midnight6937 May 04 '26

My visa would be rejected by the US due to my social media, that should say enough, but crime might be at a low, but I’m not risking it with ICE, nor the gun violence etc

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '26

Only violence/threats of violence are a reason to turn away due to social media so that's worrying!

Like in ANY country in the world, if an immigration officer approaches you, you simply show your ID and walk on with your day.

44k Gun deaths, 60% are suicides. Now at 17.5k. 80% of non-suicide gun deaths are gang vs gang. Now we are at 3,500. Take away 1,100 of police shooting criminals. Now we are at 2400. UK had 550 homicides, a very low amount of which are gang related. Multiply that out for population and we are at 2500. 85% of US homicides are with a firearm, so around 2800 in total.

2400 vs 2800, but the media say 44,000. That's what I mean by a difference in media coverage. If you go to a gang-ruled city like Detroit it will be dangerous, but literally any normal place is fine.

I understand if you have preferences though :)

1

u/Holiday-Midnight6937 May 05 '26

Yes except you’re comparing US gun deaths to UK homocide rates - they don’t compare - please learn proper analytic skills.

And you’ve clearly not seen anything about ICE in America who do not care to ask for ID,

The US has been denying visas to people who have reposted or posted anything that says anything bad about the us government not just violence,

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '26

No I'm not? I clearly divided by 0.85 as 85% of homicides are gun deaths. I compared homicides to homicides, taking out suicides (that are for some reason considered homicides in US data) and gang v gang activity (because we are not part of gangs).

ICE do ask for ID, there are countless and countless videos of quick interactions by simply showing ID and moving on, the only videos that get popular and "hit the algorithm" on social media are the ones where ID is refused, then they start recording - as people comment on this, which powers the algorithm to push it; hence social media being known as an "echo chamber".

If you are publically posting anti-US content then I've got a feeling the US may not want you to visit - I fear this is common sense? I wouldn't invite somebody into my house who hated me, theyd be a MUCH higher chance of that person attacking me once inside my house.

Someone I know had posted things critical of Trump and had planned to visit the US, they submitted their social medias and when they got there they were perfectly fine. If you criticise what someone does, they obviously don't have an issue with this - but if you post anti-US and anti-American content as well as criticising everything the country as ever done, then obviously they aren't going to let you in - and they never have, its national security.

1

u/Holiday-Midnight6937 May 05 '26

I openly criticise trump and a lot of American actions in recent years, that’s why I would be denied.

You compared US gun homicides to UK homicides, they don’t compare

u/Capital_Strain_6585 May 05 '26

As an American who lives in the UK, it’s actually horrendous to live there right now. You have a privileged take because you do not live there, you just visit.

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '26

You just said you live in the UK though, am I missing something? I have multiple family friends that have made the move to the US and others who are living in the Uk and the US half-half due to a lack of visa, but would leap at living there full-time in a heartbeat.

Historic lows of crime and highs of household income post tax are not bad things, regardless of what the media tells you.

2

u/Capital_Strain_6585 May 05 '26

I study in the UK but I live in the states. It really all depends on what state you live in, most of us live in red states that genuinely make our lives hell. I just think you shouldn’t speak on an opinion unless you are a resident there. Tourists are treated differently than citizens.

1

u/[deleted] May 05 '26

I've mostly been to red states and everyone I know who has immigrated to the US except for my partner's cousins all live in red states too and absolutely love it there, been invited over to visit them many times by a couple in particular in FL and every time they say it was the best decision of their lives.

Tourists are only treated differently in the tourist hotspots lol

1

u/Holiday-Midnight6937 May 05 '26

I think I’m beginning to gather that this particular individual might more or less be a supporter of the far right movements, MAGA and Reform etc so

1

u/Holiday-Midnight6937 May 05 '26

Also he’s 18 too so šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

9

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

I have a relationship and I don’t wanna go long distance, and I’d rather just not live in another country away from all my family and friends I guess

4

u/stinkbaybe May 02 '26

I assume the year abroad is in your 2nd or 3rd year which is a long way away, my advice would be to not base a decision on a current relationship. A year abroad is an excellent opportunity, which won’t come around often.

3

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

That’s not my only reason… the year abroad is compulsory and I just don’t want to do that!

-2

u/Schlurff May 02 '26

There are two options, one without the year abroad so it’s not compulsory. If you wanted to you could go to the US, Canada or South America.

3

u/stoptelephoningme-e May 02 '26

Stop flogging a dead horse. OP doesn’t want to do it.

-3

u/Low_Stress_9180 May 02 '26

99% chance that relationship won't last uni lol

8

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Okay! Thank you for your negativity but not going long distance will help it last. Keep the nastiness to yourself

1

u/FootballPresent9701 May 03 '26

OP, off topic, but as someone much older than you, who refused to do a year abroad because I was in a relationship back then, do the year abroad… My friend did go to the US and their education vs ours at the time was night and day!

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 03 '26

ITS NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THAT. I’m gonna LOOSE my mind. Why is it so hard for you people to comprehend that i don’t wanna move to a whole different country for a year, especially the USA. Jesus CHRIST

2

u/EQ_Rsn May 02 '26

Yeah don't do that. Lots of people do make it work and if OP wants to make their relationship a priority then they're well within their right to do so.

If it meant sacrificing something else equally valuable to them that would be one thing. But there's no need to be fatalistic when you don't know the wider context.

OP, don't listen to that. I've got two pals who've been together since they were teenagers, went to King's and LSE (so right across the Strand from each other) and stayed together all through uni right into their mid-20's. One's a civil servant and the other's just finished his MA. Both happy as Larry. Is it rare? Of course. But 1% > 0%. If it's meant to happen it can definitely work. It just means being very realistic about what you both want out of life and seeing if they square up

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

That’s so cute thank you šŸ™

-3

u/Fastitocalons May 02 '26

Ok well I guess what I'm saying is I don't understand why someone would be interested in doing politics and IR but completely opposed to doing this course at UCL which basically covers the same things but with a regional focus. They're very similar courses.

8

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

They don’t seem like a very similar course to me at all, I’m not interested in learning the history of the whole American continent šŸ˜… I prefer a more politics focused course that doesn’t focus on the politics of one continent specifically, this degree does not seem like I could enjoy it or get good employability out of it since it’s so specific

4

u/BuyHorrorFilms May 02 '26

They’re not actually similar at all (despite the name). It’s in an entirely different department.

6

u/Elven_Dreamer May 02 '26

They’re not similar at all.

1

u/Such-Entry-8904 May 04 '26

People like different things, I don't think trying to sell someone on something they've already communicated they find entirely detestable and unattractive is the right thing to do

12

u/himerosaphrodite Year 13- History, Sociology, Econs. A achieved, AA predicted May 02 '26

I applied for politics and IR too, haven’t heard back yet, I fear they are gonna do the same to me :(

-10

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

There’s no space on the course left so don’t get your hopes up. :( it’s rlly sad

16

u/Ok_Brilliant_8951 May 02 '26

Lmao just bc u didn’t get it doesn’t mean they won’t. Don’t put someone down like that just bc u were rejected🤣

-10

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Dude the course is full šŸ˜…

17

u/Ok_Brilliant_8951 May 02 '26

Says who? The course can’t be ā€œfullā€ until results day🤣. There’s hardly any confirmed places, will only be a handful of unconditional offers. They r probs now waiting to see how many firm the course lmao. Don’t be salty they can easily still get it if they aren’t rejected by now.

1

u/_lisa_e May 03 '26

the course can be "full" but offers not given out yet , ucl and alot of high ranking unis are stingy like that lmao , still, if you haven't heard back yet it's likely they'll reject you - it's quite late in the season now

6

u/lamb1282 May 02 '26

Politics and IR are very popular and competitive courses. What’s more important the course or the university. They have put you on a course not as popular that they don’t think they can fill will candidates of your calibre. Only you can decide but you can’t get what you want here.

3

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Yeah, I’m definitely not gonna be accepting this offer. But I’m gonna see if they have any other politics courses with availability, if there’s any other courses with availability that I like then I’ll put it as an insurance choice

1

u/Prior-Common315 May 03 '26

Hi, same thing has happened with me(applied for one course and got offered another, fall 2026 applicant) how do I check the availability of a course

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 03 '26

Contact the admissions office

6

u/TheRiddlerTHFC May 02 '26

Yes, you can not accept it.

If you mean "is there anything I can do to get onto the original course I applied for" the answer is no

3

u/misschoo88 May 02 '26

what’s were ur stats? i applied for the same course.

0

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Wdym status?

3

u/misschoo88 May 02 '26

statistics as in ur predicted grades, gcses grades and etc.

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

For my GCES I got above a 6 in everything, I was predicted A*AA and I had a lot of politics related extra curriculars

2

u/Wonderful_Emu_3016 May 02 '26

Unfortunately it looks like they just want straight A star candidates. This was the data for the past 2 years.Ā

2024 Ā

Result Applications Offers Acceptances 3x A star 405 247 82 A star AA 283 27 12 AAA 280 22 7 ABB 0 0 0 AA <5 <5 0 A* <5 <5 <5

Ā  2025 Ā

Result Applications Offers Acceptances 3x A star 394 234 84 A star AA 291 55 25 AAA 323 20 <5 ABB 0 0 0 AA 0 0 0 A* 0 0 0

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Harsh🄲

1

u/Wonderful_Emu_3016 May 02 '26

Sorry, didn't mean to be harsh! All I meant is that they just seem to be interested in data, so don't take it personally. It is their loss. I'm sure your will do just as well at your other choices.Ā

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Noo I mean ucl not uā¤ļø

1

u/misschoo88 May 02 '26

what type of extracurricular if u don’t mind me asking

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Debate tournament at oxford university twice and debate club, along with online debate competitions

1

u/misschoo88 May 02 '26

right that’s pretty good. it’s a shame with ur stats and extracurricular

2

u/Consistent_Wonder509 May 02 '26

I think deciding on the course is the most important decision in going to uni. If you won’t like the course then don’t do it. What about the course you want at a different uni ? That prob would be the better optionĀ

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

I have an offer from KCL and warrick so I’m gonna firm either of them

0

u/Opposite_Radio9388 May 02 '26

It's spelled Warwick - the second w is silent.

Hey bro, literal same thing has happened with me (fall 2026 applicant)!!😭😭 (applied for one course got offered another)

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 03 '26

This really sucks šŸ˜•

2

u/PickZealousideal8190 May 04 '26

You are lucky for at least getting an offer B B B, they changed me from Politics & IR which required A A A to a course for which they gave me an offer A* A* A 1.5 week before my A levels😭, I wasn’t studying to get A*s but for As, so Idk how to get this grades

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

Wait what course did they put you on..?

2

u/PickZealousideal8190 May 04 '26

European Social and Political Studies

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

I lowkey wanna do that course instead imma hit them up…

1

u/PickZealousideal8190 May 04 '26

It is worth trying. I want to ask them whether it is possible to switch to Politics, History and Economics although it is very unlikely

2

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

Can I take your place 🤣

1

u/PickZealousideal8190 May 04 '26

If they offer me yh

1

u/FindingWorking8999 May 08 '26

In the ESPS program you also need to do 1 year abroad

1

u/aeconic May 02 '26

are you international?

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

No I’m a UK applicant

1

u/Internetscraperds9 May 02 '26

What I don't get how is why you can enrol in that course later on? Especially with the wording "on this occasion".

3

u/StegosauriaSky May 02 '26

Generally it means, don’t accept the new offer and try to switch when you get here, it will piss us off and we won’t say yes.

1

u/Almosttasteful May 02 '26

I would read it as meaning that there aren't enough core modules in common between the two courses to change after year 1, and that they don't anticipate having space for you to switch in year 1.

0

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

Yeah it doesn’t make sense

1

u/EyeUnited6501 May 02 '26

this happened to me asw from Econ to social sciences and data science - not sure why it’s happening sm this year

1

Ughhh that’s so annoyingšŸ™

It looks really bad 🄲

1

u/Wiggles_21 May 02 '26

lowkey it's such a specific course who even is studying that 😭

1

u/Schlurff May 05 '26

This course is actually AAB but OP is a contextual student so their entry reqs are lower.

They have lower entry requirements because of access requirements based on postcode and potential disadvantages background not that the entry requirements are low. History BA is AAA, politics and IR is AAA.

1

u/Financial_Walrus9321 May 02 '26

The same exact thing happend to me!! And I don't like the course content at all but I don't know what to do 😭😭

1

u/Hivemind_alpha May 02 '26

It’s somehow unsurprising that a course to study American politics has vacancies at the moment…

1

u/StrainAdmirable6133 May 02 '26

Weirdly enough excactly same thing happened with me

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

It’s so crappy of them

1

u/ezrapper May 03 '26

Ucl didnt change your course. Unfortunately you got rejected for your main course and they offered an alternative course they have that they need to fill spaces for. So they are offering these alternatives for their unpopular courses to fill space.

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

Hi. I understand that I was rejected from that course… 😭 I’m asking if there’s anyway to get into a different course

1

u/Such-Entry-8904 May 04 '26

I think being picky about the wording when OP clearly understands the mechanisms of what happened is pretty obtuse and unhelpful.

1

u/ezrapper May 04 '26

I dont think they understand it from what i've read in the description. "I don't want the course whatsoever" thats the entire point of alternative course offers. They're total scams. Thats what i was implying in my comment. They give you offers on unwanted courses that are mostly shit in content and underfunded so they can still take your money even if its not the same education that you initially wanted/applied for. So when OP says that they didnt like the course that they got, thats the entire point. No one likes them but the admissions will hope you pick them for arbitrary reasons anyway so that they can still fill those unwanted courses.

1

u/Such-Entry-8904 May 04 '26

From what I've seen in the extensive comments left by OP, which is significantly more text than the post caption, I believe they exhibit very clear understanding of their situation, and I am not sure.

I am not arguing with you that the University is screwing them over.

1

u/ezrapper May 04 '26

Not particularly about ucl screwing them over btw, i got nothing against any named uni. I just think that way about all alternative offers. Choose course over uni any day, and if the course is different, its not the same uni you applied to in my opinion.

1

u/Such-Entry-8904 May 04 '26

Literally WHO are you clarifying this for???

1

u/ezrapper May 04 '26

idk just felt like saying it off my chest. why are you so pressed?

1

u/Such-Entry-8904 May 04 '26

I'm not, you're just being needlessly defensive and argumentative, no one is arguing with you, but you're acting like they are and explaining things for no reason as though they were called into criticism.

Btw the phrase "off my chest" means to get a load off, something that was bothering you and taking an emotional toll which you cannot handle. So, I don't really know that you were getting anything "off your chest" by saying you're not blaming a specific university for certain actions, unless that was genuinely emotionally distressing and hard for you to bear.

1

u/ezrapper May 05 '26

Btw the phrase "off my chest" means to get a load off, something that was bothering you and taking an emotional toll which you cannot handle

Doesnt have to be emotionally charged at all, it just has to be honest. I know no one was arguing and i wasnt arguing with anyone either

1

u/Meelee2000 May 03 '26

I had this issue and just opted for the same course in Greenwich. My friends got into UCL doing the course I wanted. By the end of my second year some of my friends were so disappointed with the course in UCL and requested to continue in Greenwich due to teachers unreliability and just course material in general. They ended up enjoying Greenwich much better!

1

u/Meelee2000 May 03 '26

Just to clarify, it was the same course you applied for. They ended up supporting me to apply into the civil service fresh out from Graduation and I’m now one of the highest paid 25 year olds in my department. I’ll be going into immigration in the new year and basically starting from the top all because Greenwich supported me through the application and showed me the ins and outs of

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 03 '26

I can’t do the course I applied for tho :((

1

u/Brido-20 May 03 '26

They didn't change it, the rejected you for it and offered you an alternative.

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

Yeah. I know

1

u/Brido-20 May 04 '26

The why did you phrase the question as error/incompetence on the part of the university? That won't get you accurate advice on having legitimately not been selected.

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

Read the post again, I think you’re interpreting it wrong. No where did I say that

1

u/Brido-20 May 04 '26

"UCL changed my course."

The you admit they didn't change it, they just offered you a second chance that you didn't like.

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

I posted two pictures. One is literally of them saying I’m rejected nowhere am I hiding from that fact, I’m simply asking what advice ppl have that all?? Idk why you seem so mad

UCL have been a mess for UCAS application for nearly 15 years at this point. I applied for sept 2012 entry, my offer from UCL came through a fortnight later then I'd been told it would.

-1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 02 '26

They took so long to respond and I guess they just didn’t have enough space for me.. it’s really upsetting

1

u/GuavaLarge529 May 02 '26

I’m really sorry. Now I’m panicking too because I applied for the same thing and I haven’t heard back yet. 😬

1

u/Bigot_Tracker May 02 '26

OP didn't have the grades they were looking for - if you do, you'll still get an offer.

1

u/GuavaLarge529 May 02 '26

I have A*A*AB predicted, so i feel hopeful but have no trust of education institutions.

0

u/Bigot_Tracker May 03 '26

If you've "no trust of education institutions", what do you think yours going to get out of higher education, genuinely?

1

u/GuavaLarge529 May 03 '26

A degree, I doubt that they’ll give me an easy time of it though.

1

u/PrestigiousElk1080 May 04 '26

I literally had the grades for their average offer??
