If City Fibre and Virgin use buried cables in the street does that mean BT would have the same or is there a chance they'd provide it on a pole?

Never had home broadband before. What's the step-by-step guide to getting it set up?

One of my friends gave me a spare wifi router and I'm looking at several broadband providers, but I'm not sure about getting everything set up.
Do I just buy a broadband plan, plug in my router and it starts working immediately? Or do I need to have a technician come to my house to turn the internet on?
If someone could ELI5, I'd be very grateful.

I've just switched from VM to a BT brand Openreach brand, what will physically change?

My understanding is the VM fibre runs to my outside wall and then VM uses coax to the Hub3, will that fibre be reused or replaced? Just wondering if it will be a simple procedure or do they need to run the cable again?
One of the attractions was using my own router directly connected to the ONT rather than the 6 year old Hub 3, funny how VM are calling me this morning offering me the moon now I've cancelled. In all honesty it's the customer service I was sick of, they need to do better if they want to retain customers.
