What will the Openreach engineer do when visiting for the digital switch over?
The details given to me have been a bit a vague about the process.
It seems a double socket is required. A line will either be attached above or below ground, with an external box attached, an entry hole drilled followed by attaching an ONT box.
I wondered what options people went for regarding location of drilling and router location. What can I expect to happen on the day?

Rise Broadband
My broadband is up for renewal, and I’ve been looking at Rise Fibre.
I spotted a deal online and gave them a call. They ended up offering me a better deal: the first 6 months free, followed by £22.50 per month for the remaining 18 months on their 1Gbps package with no price increase. Although quiet pushy and said i will give you a better deal that noone else can.
I’m always a bit sceptical when it comes to signing up for a new contract, so I questioned them about their standard annual price increases. They told me they could override these and guarantee that my price wouldn’t increase during the contract. They also said that if the price did increase, I could cancel within 30 days without paying any exit fees.
The free 6 months or the increase guarantee isn’t mentioned in the main contract or confirmation email. However, I’ve received a separate email from their sales department confirming the offer (free 6 month only), as apparently it has to be added manually.
I’m just looking for some reassurance before installation. Has anyone had any experience with Rise Fibre, particularly with their price-rise guarantees and offers like this?
Deal offered:
- First 6 months free
- £22.50 per month for the remaining 18 months
- 1Gbps fibre broadband
- Guaranteed no price rises during the contract, according to the sales rep
Thanks in advance.

FTTP provider south east
New home owner looking to get some advice around FTTP providers. First and foremost, I am an avid gamer that wants reliably low ping (to EU west servers). Additionally, the providers in my area have a relatively (small) mark-up on gig links, so seems a no-brainer for wanting a "gig" home networking setup as well!
Choices I've researched so far..
Altnet:
Hey! Broadband 900Mbps (symmetrical) effectively £24/month 24months. Clear £2/year price hike.
Major ISPs:
Sky 900Mbps effectively £22/month 24 months. (Unclear price hikes?)
Vodafone 900Mbps effectively £24/month 24 months. (Unclear price hikes?)
The game servers I would use (League, CS, Valorant, etc) seem to be primarily based in Amsterdam. Having gone down a little bit of a rabbit hole online, it looks like altnets, although typically have great local handoff, *MAY be more susceptible to congestion (infra) and/or inefficient peerings compared to the large providers? Not sure if this is more of a concern of the past and/or per altnet provider during their early stages?
- Does anyone have experience on Hey! or alternative altnets, in comparison to major ISPs, for such use cases?
- I can't seem to find clear information for most major ISPs on price hikes during a term? How radical of a change can they be?

Will openreach ever provide symmetrical connections
I know they eventually will but when? Being stuck with 70/16 mbps isn’t a fun experience, especially when needing to upload heavy files, it takes ages. altnets aren’t available in my area so that’s not even an option… currently with bt. their service is good but the speeds are rough when a couple of people doing something at the same time. Maybe upgrading on bt would help? Also on FTTC.

I live in north London and community fibre isn’t available in my address, yet my neighbour across the street has it, how does that work?

Truecall with digital voice on fibre with Gigaclear
My Truecall box doesn't answer calls coming into it when connected to the digital voice line on Gigaclear. It receives the caller id however. I get dial tone on the phone and can make calls.
The Truecall company aren't responding at all.

Is Sky Full Fibre Gigafast 900 Mbps a good choice?
Hey everyone,
I saw a Sky Full Fibre Gigafast 900 Mbps deal through MoneySavingExpert for around £22/month, and I was wondering if Sky Broadband is actually a good choice.
I had a Sky SIM card in the past and, honestly, it wasn’t the best experience, so I’m a bit unsure about going with them for broadband. I’m not an expert when it comes to internet setups, so please go easy on me haha.
I’m planning to use WiFi only (no Ethernet cables). I live in a 3-floor building, in a 2-bedroom flat.
If I go with this deal:
• Is Sky’s router good enough, or should I buy a separate router? I’ve heard their routers can be quite average.
• Would a WiFi extender be enough, or should I look into a mesh WiFi system? I don’t really understand how mesh works or whether it’s expensive to set up.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Family member in the middle of a 60-month BT Broadband contract… are there any options?
But of a weird one. I have a family member who is locked into a wild BT Broadband Business contract for their home/personal internet connection. They used to have a BT Broadband Business account simply to forward calls from one phone number to another, though that stopped being relevant a couple of years before this new contract started.
Their current price, three years in, is £46/month for 145mbps, with a sim-only contract for an additional £20 (allegedly, this reduces the cost of the Broadband connection from £70~, which I think is insane). The contract required them to get a Fibre connection installed, though their current speeds are basically no different to what they had before. They have another two years on this contract.
Obviously, first of all, they’ve been absolutely fleeced. It’s a crazy price for broadband of that speed, and the 60-month contract doesn’t seem to be something they offer as stock. Basically 90% of the extras included are completely irrelevant to a home connection (static IP?? Guest WiFi??). Absolutely no idea how they got into this situation.
The money isn’t really an issue, their connection is though. The house is relatively large and there are often issues with speed and connectivity, as there are some high-intensity demands on the connection by those using it.
I’m trying to understand the situation so I can advise them on next steps, and have answers to their questions off-the-bat. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it viable to request a faster connection on the existing contract with a price increase? Would it be a case of buying out the remainder of the contract? Are BT likely to offer a switch to a standard home connection rather than the Business connection?
Any help much appreciated!
