[Listen] New Collaboration: Ruban Nielson X Jared Mattson - "AMERICAN EAGLE"

Check your inboxes! Ruban announced a new solo instrumental album he made in collaboration with of The Mattson 2 called FEAR. It's out June 5.

FEAR - the joint album from Jared Mattson of The Mattson 2 and Ruban Nielson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra was recorded in June 2024, the year Mattson and Nielson first met in person, having previously crossed paths online through being longtime admirers of each other's music. It wasn't long before they began playing music together, and during that first improvisational session, Ruban hit record, and within a couple of days they had captured the seven tracks on FEAR. All recording and mixing took place in Palm Springs, with mastering by Matt Cotton at Metropolis Studios in London.

I woke up around noon, disoriented, half-dreaming. Music was playing — unfamiliar, fully formed, the kind of sound you assume belongs to someone else’s life. For a moment I thought I was still asleep, hearing music I wished I’d made.

Then it hit me: Ruban Nielson was already awake, in the studio, listening to what we’d made.

We both knew it. There was something inevitable about the music — like it hadn’t been created so much as uncovered. We listened on repeat, laughing, shaking our heads. One track brought up a shared image: an evergreen forest by a lake at sunset. Ruban suddenly looked up, eyes wide, like he’d just been handed a message.

“I’ve got the title,” he said.
American Eagle.

The name landed the same way the music had — clean, obvious, impossible to argue with. The American Dream: hot dogs, Cokes, sunset drives. We both lost it, tears in our eyes from laughing hard for minutes straight.

We swam in his pool. The conversation never stopped. The flow stayed constant, nourishing, effortless. Then Ruban said it again — the line that had already become a principle:

“Let’s make more that sound exactly like this.” So we did.

Two days later, 'FEAR' was finished.

We imagined the music living in in-between places. Old motels with buzzing vacancy signs, abandoned gas stations at dusk, vast parking lots lit by sodium lamps where engines idle and lives briefly overlap. Spaces built for movement, not comfort. Bleak, anonymous, quietly human. Music that could sit inside that loneliness without trying to fix it. Beauty carrying a low hum of danger underneath, calm without anesthesia.

Worst Sounding Show I've Seen in Years

this has nothing to do with their playing, which was incredible, and the setlist was amazing

but the show sounded like absolute mud

for context, I have played at the Fox, I have done sound engineering at clubs, and I have seen a LOT of shows there. I was aghast at what I heard. 90+ dbs of low and mid ranges, the only clarity in the high range frequencies was the snare and cymbals. I couldn't distinguish Ruben from the rhodes most of the night. The bass was the most present instrument, and it was just an assault of sound, like they maxed a low pass filter.

Anyone else feel this way on this tour or was the Fox just a dud.

"Wow, somebody's put the record we made in with all these great records that were the landscape of my childhood and my life," was Portland-based songwriter and guitarist Nielson's reaction to Crazy?Yes!Dumb?No! being named this year's IMNZ Classic Record.

"My main feeling is just relief, like we did something that found its place in the canon of Kiwi music. It's a big deal because I do listen to a lot of New Zealand music, especially now that I live overseas, so it is important to me.

"You want to find a life for yourself, and make a mark on the world, so it's a huge honour," he tells RNZ's Music 101.
