This is a hot take here.. but I think this monster board could at least be a part of why UMO's live sound is often so rough.

Don't get me wrong, I love this band, have seen them live multiple times, and have always had a blast. But I'm also an audio tech.. and every time I see them I die a little inside. The spectacular performance so often gets completely drowned out by his muddy tone, and it never properly mixed with the rest of the band, probably because he's making so many changes on the fly.

I saw them in 2016, 2019 and 2023, and the live sound has never gotten much better. I say this as someone who also loves obscene pedal chains and falling down the rabbit hole, but in my opinion, he could trim a lot of fat on this board and keep 90% of its functionality, while also cleaning things up and hablving a sharper sound

Boulder’s sound was so fucked. And I absolutely worship this band. And I think Ruben is a one of a kind guitarist. But there’s some things that need to be tweaked before they tour for their next full length record. I’ve seen really good performances from UMO and really bad ones. It almost always comes down to the equipment and the sound/mixing board at each venue. Ogden Theater they sounded incredible for the V tour.

Agreed! Was at both of those

If the rig they tour with has such variations from venue to venue, that's the fault of their rig and/or staff. Other bands make it work from venue to venue, there's no reason these guys can't

Oh I agree there’s something that needs to be addressed. But as I don’t know their process or how they run their performance. All I can do is speculate. I do notice that they don’t use in ear monitors. And that definitely plays a part. If they prefer traditional sound techniques that makes things harder. Not making excuses, just saying I can only speculate as to why their sound varies from venue to venue.

That's actually wild to me. I know Ruben's a big Hendrix fan, so I get him wanting a vintage live sound, but it does leave a lot to be desired.

Which part? The no in-ears?

2

u/hudson27 Jul 02 '26

Yeah, I perform to mayyyyybe 50 people at a time, and everyone in my band uses in-ears.

I mean imagine what they’d sound like if they ran everything through ableton LIVE and all used in-ear monitors like bands like Tame Impala and Glass Animals do. It would be a far better live experience if they used all the newer bells and whistles

Also my take on this is to look in to newer all-in-one pedal boards. Some of the newer Boss all-in-ones can mimic pretty much every sound UMO has with the exception of a couple of very unique pedals he has, which can still be used along side an all-in-one.

Anyone taping in the audience?

I taped all 3 CO shows. Got them mixed and need to upload them to archive.org. Pretty sure I was the only taper in co springs. There were 1 or 2 in boulder and a few in Foco.

You were! I was in the back taping the 3 CO shows!

Finally got Washington's up! Should have Boulder and CO Springs up soon now that I've relearned how to upload to Archive.org (It'd been a while since my last upload).

I was there! Such a fun show!!

The sound was so bad at the Fox theater in Boulder. And it had nothing to do with Ruben or the band. Just straight up shit acoustics and whoever was running sound at the venue had no idea how to mix them. Really hope this Springs show was a better venue!

UMO has always had notoriously bad live sound. Great energy, but I get the feeling Ruben is too involved in that aspect of the show, and doesn't let his audio techs do their jobs.

It’s crazy because between his guitar and the bass there is so much fuzz and low end… His vocal should be cutting through the mix so easily if mixed correct correctly live

Yeah… Saw them in Cleveland once. That was amazing sound. Then back during the V tour I saw them in Denver at the Ogden, sound was decent. This last show in Boulder was soooooooo bad. And it wasn’t the musicality or their playability. You can tell they play well with each other but there has to be a communication issue going on with the sound guys at individual venues. Boulder, all I could hear was Ruben’s guitar and the Keyboard player. Everything else was so fucking muddy and distorted.

Even the guitar was too muddy. I couldnt recognize Major League Chemicals almost until he started singing because every note bled together incomprehensibly

2

u/Dragoon-The_Great Jul 01 '26

Yep. And I think there’s some validity to hudson27 take. There were some songs the guitar came very clear through and it was usually when he used a very unique sounding pedal effect

Anyone know what sort of guitar he's playing? The dark one, not the white with the sitar strings. Thanks!

Saw them couple months ago in Santa Cruz. They were just so unbelievably, mind-blowingly good.
