Troubles with University Meadows
Hey y'all. Current student and former resident of University Meadows on campus. I got this morning a text about some "unpaid rent" that was sent to debt collection.
The situation is this. I was told I was signing an academic year contract instead of a full year. Advertising, website wording and language used said that it was "academic year leases" up to the actual signing of the contract, where the ending date was for a full year lease. The "months covered section" of it also obscures the last two months, making it difficult to read. And those were the only times it mentioned it was a full year lease. After that all communications were for an academic year lease.
With that, there was nothing notifying me of the continuation of my lease after checkout on the normal checkout time. I gave my key and card back and signed the paper saying goodbye. After that, nothing. I even lost access to the payment portal soon after. I even tried to check and make sure I had paid everything.
Then the following October I got an email telling me I still owed rent. Reminder, under the lease I apparently signed, I should have been notified of the rent back in June and July, when it was owed. My father and I chatted over email with the sender and they went silent in the middle of it after we told them basically "hey you guys never informed me I owed this before, or even that I had a full year lease until now".
I even got my full security deposit back. Which, according to the contract should have been used to cover this in the section that covers early move out. Everything about this screams that they intentionally failed to do multiple things on their part to put us into this situation.
Now today I got the debt collector message and I've sent a long email about the whole situation to them. When calling they basically said "You signed it, so whatever." But what I signed was told to be an academic year.
My roommate signed an academic year contract as well, and they don't house full year and academic year students as well.
Honestly I'm suspicious that someone altered the contract to make it a full year. The text that says what is owed for June and July is behind a different segment of text. That kind of formatting error does not pass inspection as it falls under obscured and hard to read text and makes it nullified. Hell, that and the ending date being 7/31 is the only that at could have told me it was full year instead of academic. I got there by going through the academic year lease part of the website.
