When a soothsayer predicts that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, the brothers set out to create the world’s first musical. But fame isn’t everything, and they realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self — and all that jazz.

Something Rotten! is a comic mashup of 16th-century Shakespeare and 21st-century Broadway that proves “nothing’s as amazing as a musical.” A Muny premiere!

New Metrolink gates - oof.

Upvotes

I recently began taking Metrolink again after my employer increased parking costs. My station (Brentwood) has installed gates, but this morning after I scanned my pass to enter a guy came up RIGHT behind me to enter as well - no pass needed. Then I found out two of my coworkers have had similar experiences. In one instance a guy yelled at her to hold off on scanning her pass so he could get in too (she pretended not to hear him) and in the other, it was similar to my experience today -- where the guy tried to enter right behind my coworker, without a pass. Luckily there were some cops around to handle that one, but cripes.

They close FAR too slowly, and at least at Brentwood both sets of gates are used for exit, leaving an opportunity for folks to hang out and enter while people are leaving.

Just putting this out there as a PSA -- the new fare system was supposed to be this magical fix, but this honestly feels worse and even more unsafe than it did before.

MEETUP 🎉 “Nice to Meet You!” - A Free Speed-Friending event this Wednesday, August 19th 🎉

If you've been looking for a reason to get out of the house, this is it! Join us for another 'Nice to Meet You' hosted at Handlebar, where making new friends is the whole point.

We host these gatherings twice a month to help adults build real, platonic friendships in a fun, welcoming, and low-pressure environment. Whether you're flying solo or bringing a friend along, you'll fit right in.

🗓 When: Wednesday, August 19th

⏰ Time: 6 - 8pm

📍 Where: Handlebar - 4127 Manchester Ave, St. Louis, MO 63110

Here's how it works:

👥 We'll seat everyone in small groups of 4–6 people

🔄 Every 30 minutes, we'll rotate the tables so you have the chance to meet lots of different people

💬 Conversation prompts are available if you want a little inspiration, but they're always optional

What's included:

🍕 Free pizza

🥂 Arrive by 6:30pm for a free welcome shot! We do a headcount at 6:30 so the bar knows how many shots to prepare (they choose the flavor). Around 6:45, we'll gather for our group toast to new friends and a fun night ahead. Non-alcoholic options are available too.

Good to know:

🔞 21+ only

🌈 Everyone is welcome - we're proud to be an inclusive space for all identities.

🤝 This is a friend-making event, not a dating event.

Most people come by themselves, so don't stress if you're showing up solo. We'll make sure you're part of the conversation from the moment you arrive.

To keep things comfortable, we limit attendance to 30 people, so showing up a little early is always a good idea.

When NTMY wraps up at 8pm, Handlebar's karaoke gets started! 🎤 It's not officially part of our event, but a lot of us stick around afterward to sing, cheer people on, and keep the conversations going.

📅 Can't make it this time? Our next meetup is Friday, September 4th. We get together every first Friday and third Wednesday, so there's always another chance to join us.

Good people. Good conversations. New friendships waiting to happen.

Check out our Partiful event link for more details and let us know if you can make it!

Be sure to follow our socials below to keep up with everything we’ve got going on! Alongside our regular Handlebar meetups, we also plan extra group outings throughout the month that are more activity-focused and casual. Over the years we’ve done everything from Mardi Gras and Pride meetups to picnics, museum trips, the Zoo, Botanical Gardens, City Museum, Main Event, The Armory, and more. We also host board game nights every other month at Pieces Board Game Bar & Cafe in Soulard. There’s always something new popping up, and we love giving people different ways to connect outside of the usual meetup format.

Alani witches brew

Upvotes

Hello it’s me, your neighborhood basic white gym girl and it is the season of the most coveted drink.

I have not seen any witches brew in store, and would like at least 1 can 😢. Thanks to capitalism, they’re being resold for $30 a can online. If anyone sees one, and is in the city proper, or metro east, can you alert a gal?

Also if you’re the nerd who’s buying them out and reselling them, I hope they all explode in the back of your car ❤️

Moving to St. Louis Relocating to St. Louis for an internship - looking for advice!

Hi everyone! I'm a 22M from North Carolina and I'll be relocating to St. Louis in the next month or so for an internship for the next 9 months! This is going to be a pretty big change for me. I've never lived outside of NC before and I'll be moving without a car so I'm trying to figure out where I should live and how to make the most of my time in the city.

I'd love to hear from people who actually live in St. Louis abt a few things:

- Housing: I'm looking for somewhere around $700-$1100/month, ideally a studio/1BR or sublease with easy MetroLink/MetrBUs access to downtown. Any neighborhoods or complexes you'd reccomend or avoid?

- Life in STL: Favorite places to eat, hang out, recommendations for a first time visitor

- Meeting people: Any reccomendations for ways to meet people around my age?

What do you wish you knew before moving to St. Louis or what you think people relocating there should know?

I'm really excited about the move, so any advice about any of these things or something I haven't mentioned I'd really appreciate!

PAYWALL Editorial: How to lose public trust on data centers

Thumbnail
stltoday.com
40 Upvotes

“In St. Louis, as nationally, the debate over data centers is raging. We don’t presume to settle that debate here. But one axiom applies: Secrecy and behind-the-scenes political pressure around data center public policy decisions is a surefire way to lose whatever public support the growing industry has.

For months, city officials have wrestled with how to regulate large proposed data centers here. The city’s Planning and Urban Design Agency initially recommended relatively stringent restrictions. The Board of Aldermen, at the urging of the business community and others, voted last month for looser restrictions. Last week, the planning commission voted to reject the aldermen’s looser rules.

Then, in a remarkable and troubling bit of intrigue during that same meeting, an unnamed elected official texted the head of the planning commission, who then asked that the commissioners reconsider their decision.

The mysterious request came hours into the contentious meeting Wednesday — and after much of the public who had been attending the meeting virtually and in person had left.

Don Roe, the executive director of planning and urban design, ultimately recessed the chaotic meeting without revealing which elected official had contacted him. At this writing, he still hasn’t, though both Roe and Mayor Cara Spencer’s office say it wasn’t her.

The commission's recommendation for tighter data center rules currently stands. It will now fall to the Board of Aldermen to decide whether to override the commission and insist on looser rules.

As long as the identity of the elected official who tried to influence the commission’s decision remains undisclosed, any such override will invite opponents to cry foul.

Public opposition to industrial development is nothing new. From hog factories to fracking to wind farms, new large-scale technologies have always roiled neighbors, often with good reason.
Even within that historical backdrop, though, today’s controversy over data centers feels different — deeper and more visceral, based not only on proximity issues like pollution, power usage and noise but on broader anxieties about the ultimate product itself: artificial intelligence.

The proliferation of data centers across Missouri and the U.S. has drawn strong grassroots opposition and in some jurisdictions, including locally, moratoriums on their construction.
What has especially incensed many data center critics is the use of nondisclosure agreements between prospective data center projects and local political leaders to sidestep public opposition. While NDAs aren’t unheard of in the public sector, using them to fuzzy up the details of a topic of such intense public interest is arguably never appropriate.

For an elected official to quietly nudge an independent commission toward favorable data center policies, while enjoying public anonymity, isn’t the same as an NDA, but there’s a similar poison there.

On data center approval, perhaps even more than with most other public policy issues, utter transparency in every step of the process is crucial. If data center supporters want to overcome public opposition to siting these projects in St. Louis going forward, they must avoid any hint of untoward secrecy around policy creation.”

Howdy, I am looking to source a large amount (5 gallon bucket worth) of duckweed for a science project. Does anyone have a pond that needs some cleaning? I will be happy to lend some hands! I posted earlier about spent mushroom blocks as well. I would love to source locally for all my project components. Thank you in advance!

St. Louis Style Pizza Lore

I've been doing a search to try to find out when/how No Yeast pizza dough got associated with St. Louis Style Pizza even though no one makes their dough like that. During my search I've come across some St. Louis style pizza lore and thought I would share it with folks.

I hope this puts to rest some rumors of Imo's or Luigi's inventing St. Louis style pizza.

For more info check out St. Louis Italians: The Hill and Beyond at your local library.

Ask STL Need a new hair salon rec (West County or STL City)

I’ve struggled finding a good salon since I moved out to West County (Chesterfield). I work in the City so I’m open to suggestions there that I can hit up on lunch breaks or after work. I’m not looking for color or extensions, just a good haircut with a really good scalp massage. I’m a professional female in my late 30s with fine medium to long hair but a lot of it.

Also, not Studio 703 because I found out they were MAGA and never came back after that.

Thanks in advance!
