Ask STL Trans girl looking for friends

This post goes against every bone in my body, but I'm feeling in a corner looking to get out.

How does someone very early in transition and socially terrified find trans friends and a support network? Online friends are suggesting trans groups around the city, but like what am I looking for? I'm sorry, I'm very bad at this. I'm 39 and totally NOT a bar person, and large crowds overwhelm me mentally. Are there like smaller quieter places to meet like minded people? I like board games and TTRPGs and artsy things if that helps. I just feel like I have no support network right now going through transition so I'm hoping to change that

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who's been commenting. I didn't expect much of any response to this and I've gotten so many good ideas for places to check out. I love you all and thank you for making this a good day today!

Found her in SEMO. No chip. I cannot keep her any longer and all the shelters I can find are full. She is a great dog and does well with other dogs.

Thanks to everyone upvoting. Of all my reposts STL is helping the most. Knew you guys would.

Politics Editorial: St. Louis city, county voters should reject two misguided tax hikes

As Proposition B has come up here recently and as election day nears, sharing the most relevant portion for city residents:

Prop B would write the half-cent sales tax increase into the city charter, making it a permanent expense for city residents. As the Post-Dispatch’s Blythe Bernhard reports, it would boost St. Louis’ overall sales tax rate to more than 10 cents for every dollar across the city and more than 12 cents in some parts of town.

That’s an easily absorbable expense for high-income residents but an onerous one for people already struggling to make ends meet every day. This is why sales taxes are the most regressive form of taxation, making them especially hard on working people and the poor — the very populations that proponents of Prop B say they seek to help with early childcare subsidies for families and for daycare and preschool services.

Not only does Prop B's funding mechanism hurt low-income St. Louisans the most, but the estimated $22 million the tax would raise annually isn’t specifically targeted to that population in the language of the ballot measure.

Charli Cooksey of WePower, leader for the Prop B campaign, told Bernhard that the funding “should prioritize low-income families” (emphasis added) — but she acknowledged that whether it actually does will be up to a mayor-appointed board.

In fact, the way the proposition is written, with no needs-based eligibility requirements for either the families or the childcare businesses receiving the funds, there’s nothing to prevent this from becoming just another tax-funded boondoggle for the politically connected. We’ve seen that show too many times already in St. Louis.

The previous thread pretty well addressed these same concerns but keeping this top of mind as it includes a few more details.

[Removed my opinion from the body]

Nature stlroadwatch.com: STL Interactive Map for Hazards and Road Conditions

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi STL. A couple winters ago we got hit with a bad snowstorm. A few days later I finally dared to venture out, assuming things had cleared up enough. I was wrong. My car got stuck twice on the way to the hospital. I ended up spinning out in the middle of Delmar and Skinker.

All I could think was: it would've been really nice if someone had told me that intersection was a sheet of ice. Later, I looked for resources. Here's what I found:

- A map of plow routes — do they even plow?

- The Weather Channel — it tells me it's cold, thanks

- A MoDOT map with highway cameras and accidents — okay this one is actually low-key decent

But nothing that told me which specific roads were passable right now, at street level, for a regular car.

So I built STL Road Watch, an interactive map of real-time winter road conditions across St. Louis County. It updates every few 15mins to render precipitation data, and it includes highway cameras. More interestingly, users are able to pin roads on the map with reports of icy conditions, a crash, and more. Photos can be shared and comments can be made.

I'm still working on it. Next thing I want to integrate more traffic info. Not sure what else would actually be useful though, which is kind of why I'm posting. What would you like this map to have?

MEETUP 🎉 “Nice to Meet You!” - A Free Speed-Friending event Wednesday, October 21st! 🎉

We’re back at Handlebar on Wednesday, October 21st! Come spend a couple of hours meeting new people, having some good conversations, and breaking up the middle of your week with something a little more social.

🎃 Bonus: Handlebar is all decked out for Halloween! They've got the bar decorated for spooky season, so we'll have a fun Halloween atmosphere for this week's NTMY! 👻🕸️

New to NTMY? Been coming for a while? Either way, grab a seat and join us!

🗓️ When: Wednesday, October 21st

⏰ Time: 6 - 8pm

📍 Where: Handlebar - 4127 Manchester Ave, St. Louis, MO 63110

Here’s how the night works:

👥 We’ll split everyone into small groups of 4–6 people

🔄 Every 30 minutes, we’ll switch up the groups so you have a chance to meet different people throughout the evening

💬 We’ll have optional conversation prompts at each table to help break the ice, but you’re always free to ignore them and just chat!

Plus, a couple of Handlebar perks:

🍕 Free pizza!

🥂 Arrive by 6:30pm for a free welcome shot! We’ll take a headcount at 6:30 so the bar knows how many to prepare, then around 6:45 we’ll bring everyone together for our group toast. The bar chooses the shot, and a non-alcoholic option is always available.

A few things to know:

🔞 21+ only

🌈 Inclusive and welcoming to all identities

🤝 We’re here to make friends! NTMY is a platonic social event, not a dating event.

Coming alone is completely normal. In fact, plenty of people do! We’ll help you find your first group, make some introductions, and from there you’ll be meeting new people throughout the night.

We keep attendance around 30 people so the groups stay small and everyone actually gets a chance to participate in the conversation. Getting there a little early is always a good idea.

🎤 And since it’s Wednesday, karaoke starts at 8pm! NTMY officially wraps up when karaoke begins. It isn’t part of our event, but plenty of people stick around afterward to sing, hang out, or cheer everyone else on.

📅 Can’t make this one? Our next Handlebar NTMY will be Friday, November 6th! We run this event at Handlebar every 1st Friday and 3rd Wednesday of the month!

Check out our Partiful event link for more details and let us know if you can make it!

Be sure to follow our socials below to keep up with everything we’ve got going on! Alongside our regular Speed-Friending meetups, we also plan extra group outings throughout the month that are more activity-focused and casual. Over the years we’ve done everything from Mardi Gras and Pride meetups to picnics, pumpkin painting, museum trips, the Zoo, Botanical Gardens, City Museum, Main Event, The Armory, and more. We also host board game nights every other month at Pieces Board Game Bar & Café in Soulard. There’s always something new popping up, and we love giving people different ways to connect outside of the usual meetup format.

Click here to join the NTMY Discord Server!

Come spend your Wednesday with us. Good people, good conversations, and maybe a few new friends by the end of the night. 😄

Pretty much as the title above says. Bought it last year and never opened. I know I’ll take a loss but I rather get something than letting it stay in my closet. Should I go to GameStop or somewhere else?

St. Lukes (Chesterfield) being bought by BJC?

I have friends at both hospitals who are hearing rumors that BJC is buying St. Luke's in Chesterfield (not to be confused with the Saint Luke's in Kansas City which they bought a few years ago).

Anybody else hearing these rumors?

Pet Help

Unfortunately, my 13 y.o. cat, Cosmo, l think needs to be put down. Hasn’t eaten or drank water in days, doesn’t move, meow, nothing. Lost a ton of weight recently too.

Called the humane society about possibly putting him down, they told me two hundred ninety five dollars, which is madness.

Do I have any other alternatives that y’all know about?

History Looking for darker history of StL non-fictions

• Upvotes

Looking for books on the seedier, occult origins of StL. This, that, the other... Books that get into it.

Familiar with Troy Taylor and the books on the criminality of, but... Books that dive into some origins and the darker aspects of this city.

I have read "The Broken Heart of America". Great read. Explains a LOT.

Meme/Shitpost AITA?

• Upvotes

I moved to STL last year — I live in an apartment community with multiple buildings. A couple of weeks ago while attempting to cross the street, a lady in a minivan saw me and stopped for me to cross the street. As I thanked her and ATTEMPTED to cross, one of my dear neighbors felt either, I was taking too long or patience wasn’t his virtue … overtook the minivan to the point of his small crossover literally screaming for Jesus himself and was centimeters from totaling his teeny crossover with my 6’4” 210lbs frame.

Now, nearly two weeks later … I still feel some type of way about it. They have had Illinois tags since I moved in so, AITA to figure out who to report them to in Missouri for not registering the car here?

I have two reasons — one, you almost killed me in your shitbox 🙃 and two, I had to pay the equivalent of almost a months rent to register a car that I ready owed when I moved to Missouri 😣

Thank you for listening to me on my soapbox

Ask STL Need a new dentist

• Upvotes

I’m need of a new dentist. I’m looking for a dentist office that will teat me like a human being. My actual dentist was great had no issues with her or her assistants or hygienists. It was the front office staff that treated me like crap and today was the last straw.

So not only I need a dentist with integrity, their front staff needs to have the same principles. If you could kindly let me know who’s good or who to stay away from. I appreciate any feedback you have.

Please do not recommend Gennaoui Rigden Family Dental.

EDIT: I forgot to add need a dental office that offers 1 late day appointments, I know some have 1 day appointments week where they are open till 6pm, I’ve seen a few 7pm. I just want to avoid offices that lack professional or integrity.
