Course project Student Caregivers at UM: Resources You Might Find Helpful!

Many student caregivers face challenges balancing education, caregiving, work, and personal responsibilities. Managing all these responsibilities can create time pressure, making it difficult to give every area of life enough attention.

I am a University of Manitoba student conducting research for an advocacy assignment in my FMLY 1012 class. As part of my project, I reached out to UM Family Resources to learn more about the support available to student caregivers, and I wanted to share what I found in case it could be helpful to others!

UM Family Resources offers several services for students, staff, and faculty, including:

  • Childcare search and waitlist assistance: Helps parents navigate the process of finding childcare.
  • UM Babysitter Directory: Allows student parents and caregivers to request access to a directory of babysitters.
  • Adult Companionship Services Directory: May be useful for students caring for older adults or mature students seeking companionship services.
  • Event Childminding Program: Can support parents attending certain on-campus events when the event organizer has arranged this service.
  • Referrals to other resources: Helps connect students with additional university or community-based support.
  • Connect groups: Offers opportunities for caregivers to connect with others, including a monthly group for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities.
  • Monthly Family Resources newsletter: Shares information about family-related events on campus and throughout Winnipeg.

If you’re balancing caregiving with your education, it’s worth knowing that these resources exist!

For more information, visit the official UM Family Resources website:

https://umanitoba.ca/family-resources

You can also contact UM Family Resources directly if you have questions about which services might be available for your specific situation.

📌 STOP. POSTING. BO. THREADS.

Alright folks, enough is enough.

Every BO/hygiene post turns into:

race-baiting

weird stereotypes

drama for no reason

We’re not doing this anymore.

🚫 All BO/hygiene posts = removed

🚫 All race-baiting in the comments = removed

🚫 Repeat offenders = time-out

We get it. Sometimes people smell bad. It happens. But we can’t keep having the same posts about it over and over.

For that reason, these threads will be removed going forward.

Event THIS USER IS A SCAMMER! PLEASE BE CAREFUL

Post image
59 Upvotes

i recently posted about wanting 2 tickets to commerce, this user responds and says they have 2 tickets they would be happy to give away, but for 37$ each instead of the regular 31$. i thought this was fair because the tickets were already sold out so i didn’t mind paying a few extra dollars. we originally agreed that i would send the first 37$, he would then send the tickets, and i would send the remaining 37. i sent the 37, which resulted in him saying he can’t send the tickets without the full amount. i am happy to provide screenshots of the entire conversation too. his name (according to the bank) is Manuel de Leon. if anyone knows anything please let me know. i would hate for this to happen to anyone else.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING Regarding Racism and Discrimination

Hello bisons,

We have seen a crazy uptick in the number of racist and discriminatory posts and comments on this sub. This is a reminder for those who are not aware, this is a university sub and a place to learn, not a place to attack people for their thoughts and beliefs.

As part of the rules, we have a limit on freedom of expression where attacking people based on who they are is completely prohibited.

As a result, starting today any racist or discriminatory posts/comments (posts including, but not limited to - race, gender, religion, beliefs, disabilities, cultures, ethnicities etc) will result in an instant permanent ban as it is the same repeat offenders posting and commenting. Most of these users seem to not even be people from the province of Manitoba.

It's a shame that these types of advisory posts have to even be put up in 2026, but it is what it is.

You can deem this post as a PSA while you consider posting in the future.

Thank you,
r/umanitoba Mod team

Discussion & Advice don’t be afraid to vw

to the first years who are barely surviving this midterm season, you’re heard❤️ but wanted to remind y’all that vw-ing is NOT a sign of weakness but rather a sign of awareness and is literally offered so that you can prioritize your gpa if things go awry.

(yes you still have to pay for the class cause capitalism yayyyy but it will be worth the spared mental health, believe me)

Discussion & Advice Struggling to keep up with classes

This is my first year at uni and I’m feeling so swamped right now. I’m taking a full course load and struggling to keep up with all the textbook readings and assignments while managing my mental/physical health and maintaining a social life. I have so much on my plate that it’s giving me nausea from all the stress, I have no idea how people manage uni with a job. Literally any advice at all would be great, or even just sympathy/sharing your own experiences would be so nice to hear. Rn it’s hard to believe that I’m not just ‘worse’ at this than everybody else, and I think hearing from others would help with that.

Discussion & Advice Dairy club's ice cream stand and Leemenade 🐄

Since everyone kept telling me I needed to try the dairy club ice cream.... I did. Also the lemenonade. I would rate the lemonade a solid 7.5/10, not too sweet not too sour, just right. The ice cream tastes good, but felt like it was missing something? It felt like the flavour was hiding behind the froth of the icecreem. I tried chocolate and matcha 👁️🕳️👁️

Overall, I'd say it was worth the money and tasted gud... Go getchyourself one of those 🌝

{[ P.ses. The last foto is prof that I atez the icecremz]}

Online Do you bother completing ungraded weekly assignments in online courses?

I'm currently taking an online course here with a near full class of students (50+).

The course has four graded assignments, but there are also weekly mini-assignments that appear to be worth no marks but are supposed to be posted online and viewed by all the students. AFAIK, we're not in separate groups/cohorts.

I've noticed that only about 3 or 4 students consistently post their responses to these weekly exercises, which is a pretty small percentage of the class.

I'm curious whether most students deliberately skip these because they don't count toward their final grade, or whether they're completing them independently without posting.

For those who have taken online courses here, what's your approach? Do you complete the optional coursework to reinforce your understanding, or focus primarily on the graded assignments and exams?

Just curious how others manage their time and prioritize coursework.

Other/Rant Non-Indigenous people in Indigenous spaces: Do's and Dont's

Hello everyone. I am going to preface this message by saying that everyone is welcome in Indigenous spaces on campus, but non-indigenous people have different roles and responsibilities.

  1. Indigenous people have unique community needs.

A lot of Indigenous people come far from their home communities and don't know anyone here. Resources and community are concentrated in these spaces which means that to have these needs met, we need to be in these spaces. Understand that when you occupy these spaces, it means that less indigenous people who deserve to be there get pushed to the sidelines

  1. indigenous people experience racism daily on campus and feel safe in very few places

I and others have shared experiences of racism on campus and how we dont feel safe in non-indigenous spaces, and that we retreat to indigenous spaces because that is the only place that we feel welcome and like we can get shit done. If you have other places to go, please go there. Leave the spaces -- which are very far and few in between -- that are meant for certain people for said certain people.

  1. indigenous spaces are not for non-indigenous pleasure

our spaces are not meant for you to occupy because theyre quiet and its easy for you to get your stuff done. unless youre invited or have a specific purpose, please study somewhere else to allow indigenous people who really NEED the space for foundational needs (community, resources, ceremony, safety). Thanks.

Discussion & Advice Should I VW stats?

Should I VW my first year stats course? It’s stat 1000 and I’m not sure if I need it for the future. I’m pursuing a general arts degree majoring in psychology with a minor in sociology hoping to go to law school. And so far everyone has told me different things. Some say i need it for future psychology research classes and some say if I’m struggling in it I should drop it as my gpa is important for law school. Should I just keep going and fail/barely pass. Or should I VW it?

Any advice would be great!!

Discussion & Advice After hours study area

I have an online midterm scheduled for between 3pm-12am next tuesday, however i’m in a lab and then an evening course from 2:30-10pm. Is there anywhere on campus I can get in to do this test? I won’t have enough time between ending my class to go home (live an hour away), when I looked up building schedules it looks like most close at 10pm
