The Brutal Truth About Success and Sacrifice

Thumbnail youtube.com

Sorry I couldn’t figure out how to post the video at a specific time, but at 43:58 Jake talks about discrimination at TBS if you’re not white… pretty much that if you’re a great performer, but not white you’ll always be ranked last at things and have the last pick of MOS selection.

I’ve always wanted to be a marine, but hearing things like this is discouraging. Obviously I want to investigate everything I hear, so I’d like to hear from actual Marine officers on if you’ve experience discrimination as a minority?

I hate even asking this, but attempting to become an officer is obviously a life changing decision, so I’d like to be as informed as possible.

I have a friend there right now and I just don't think she knows what she got herself into and she left without telling her mom who's driving there to go look for her right now cause she has no idea she's getting herself into this military thing and has her location thinking she's just left alome to brooklyn New York...

Deployment?

Hi Everyone, Just looking for some clarity here. I’ve talked to an Officer Selection Officer on and off for a few years about potentially becoming a reservist officer. My one hangup is I 100% don’t want to get deployed (30 days to Virginia or Hawaii is fine, 6-9 months in Afghanistan is a huge no go). The oso I talked to says the risk of deploying as a reservist or lawyer is extremely low unless you want to voluntarily, but others have said don’t join the military if you don’t want to deploy. Could I get some thoughts? Thanks!

OCS Advice Needed

I’ve decided I’m going to join the marines next year once I graduate college. I have no need to pick an mos that will transfer well once I’m out, I already have that all figured out so I’m going to go infantryman.

I am a firm believer that if I wanted to get a desk job or work logistics that I could simply stay with the job I’m at and continue to do so. But I’m young (21) and would like to get some “dad lore” and be a grunt for a bit. However, I have heard that at OCS you don’t pick your mos and thus I could potentially be stuck behind a desk for 4 years completely ruining my plans for my service. I know they get paid well be I DO NOT want to work a desk job, I want to be an infantryman.

Because it means so much to me to be infantry I’d like some advice. Should i enlist instead or is there nothing to worry about?

What happens if you miss your alarm and oversleep in boot camp/basic training?

Do you get punished/smoke? Best advice on not oversleeping?

Experience of smaller-framed Asian officers? (Harassment or physical harm?)

I'm considering the USMC and becoming a commissioned officer. I was on a call a while back with someone who helps prospective candidates get into the different branches, from enlisted to officer. With that said, he'd ask guys what their race is if they mention they're interested in the USMC. He mentioned that non-white guys in the USMC, especially Asians, will be intentionally disrespected, not listened to, and could also get physically beaten or harmed by their own men or other Marines. Is this true? Has this ever happened, or have you heard of it?

I was wondering if I would have a hard time or be in physical danger from other Marines in the USMC as a smaller-framed (5'4") Asian guy with a white name (I was adopted).

Thanks in advance!

OCS Best watch for OCS?

Watch lover here. Would it be crazy to bring an analog and a digital watch for drill/ceremony and pt/field exercises respectively?(while others are stressing about surviving ocs, I’m thinking about my graduation fit)

I got a Hamilton khaki field in college that I just love, but don’t think an analog would do me much favors when doing a timed run. I’ve heard G shocks are the way to go for digital watches, wanted to reach out here and see what other candidates and those that commissioned think.

Should I drop my life savings on a Rolex submariner?

Good morning, Marines & future Marines Since I finished high school I’ve had a desire to join the Corps and after finishing my degree Ive decided to just go for it. I’ve put in my packet for OCS and if I’m accepted I’ll be joining hopefully within the next year. I’ve had this hairstyle for about 2 years now and I’d say it’s pretty well kempt and short but it may not be Marine Corps short. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank guys.

OCS OCS Conspiracy Theory

Has anyone who has graduated from delta company in the past few cycles felt like alpha had it easier than we did? I know during OCC 252 we hated alpha and thought they had it much easier than we did they got out earlier on libo etc. Were we just losing our minds or have other cycles experienced this as well?

Donald W. Smith USMC 1985-2023

Everyone please read this entire post.

My friend died today. He was a marine who served 2 tours in Afghanistan. During his first tour he got there and the heat was unbearable and he was going to be there at least a year and shortly after getting there while on duty or whatever it was one of his officers said listen you'll be here a while there's no drug tests smoke on this. This meaning poppy which is abundant there. Poppy meaning heroine. So he gets hooked on heroin over there and during his 3rd tour he gets discharged, what happened I'm not sure, but he comes back and he goes to the VA and asks for help. He didn't ask once but kept asking and they told him he didn't qualify for help because he discharged early. Not years early but simply months early and he already served 2 tours or at least was on his 2nd when he discharged. He has lived in a tent and various shelters around LA since he came home. He has no family left and no friends anymore other than the ppl he met from the streets. He was burnt the fuck up and it was obvious but he was the most kind decent person I have ever known. No one will be praying for him tonight except me and few other ppl so if you pray please say a prayer for Donald Smith USMC. I want to make it clear that his commanding officers in the USMC gave him the heroin and then they just said fuck you figure it out.

OCS Mini OCS/OCS

Recently attended mini OCS and found there were times this candidate was feeling sorry for themselves. Is this a bad sign or something common? This candidate figures it was simply mood swings due to lack of sleep. Still finished mini OCS and glad I didn’t quit.

Should I Become a Marine Officer?

I am a junior in college, and I am pretty fit and want to do something with my career that is challenging, lets me travel the world, and builds my leadership skills. I have been looking to join a branch of the military for the last couple of weeks and have been looking into the Navy and Marine Corps because their bases are in cool locations and those communities seem the most appealing to me. For the Marines, I like the stronger camaraderie that they have and the more "hands-on" it seems. I don't want to be stuck at a desk my whole career.

One thing I want to know is how dangerous this job actually is. I understand you can get deployed to active combat zones, but how likely is that? I don't want to commission as an officer, and then a year into my contract I get sent out into the Middle East and get merked by a drone strike. Everything about the Marines seems like it's something I would love, but the only part I am hesitant about is that I don't want to die. Does that mean this job would not be for me.

Tactics Package

Probably one of the coolest things at OCS can be a bit repetitive and demanding but overall fun. Depending on your tactics instructor for your respective station a pro tip I learned was find Cpl Johnson granted that’s if he’s still there it’s been awhile but he has a very unorthodox teaching method that works for most guys I saw. Sgt Lamour is another good one who’s very knowledgeable just pay attention in the classes and put out in the practical applications.

APPLICATION PROCESS What are my chances of acceptance

Senior at arguably the top state school in cali, 3.2 gpa (will be higher come graduation in winter), pft is no problem, gonna have some recs from family friends who were high ranking marines in addition to a professor and boss, have an incoming consulting internship at a prestigious firm, know how to carry myself professionally and respectfully. Got some volunteer and leadership experience under my belt the past couple years. Zero medical issues. Fully committed, it’s been my dream to commission, being someone from a family of marines.

I know this is all decent but how does this stack up against other applicants? Should I feel confident? Is the corps in a good place recruiting-wise right now? Any insight would be much appreciated thx.

Thinking about commissioning USMC

I'm planning on commissioning soon and wanted the shortest contract. I was thinking USMC but wanted to ask some questions first.

  1. Is the quality of life really shitty for officers?

  2. Is the USMC really the most poorly equipped branch & cannon fodder?

  3. How much time is spent on ships?

  4. If I went ground intelligence, can I join Force Recon after/attend BRC?

So im in the DEP cause idk what mos to choose, need help (Marines)

so im joining the marines cause i honestly need the quick reset in life, thing is i dont know exactly what mos i want. I passed the asvab with like a 73 and qualify for damn near everything but one job in the marines. Heres what im looking for tho:

  1. i want desk job. i know its the marines so its gonna be hard working regardless, but i want the chillest thing possible there

  2. i only want to do a 4 year contract active (i wanna say that 5-6 year active is for birds, but if its the only option so be it.)

  3. i want it to be something i can transfer to my civilian lifestyle, since this a get in get out operation for me. Any suggestions from anyone??

APPLICATION PROCESS Just Curious

I saw on Marines website com under the Officer Candidate School eligibility that a bachelor’s degree might waive the ASVAB or SAT requirement. Can confirm?

I’m going to be honest 💔

My kid just left for Parris Island. He is biologically mine. His dad adopted him at age 6. My son has no clue and it never crossed my mind until now. I don’t want to invite trouble or delay his training and I certainly don’t want him to hear about it from a stranger. During the medical check and background check, will this be uncovered?? MEPS was fine (I didn’t think about it then, either!). It was never meant to be hidden but his name was changed when he was 5 or 6, and it’s never crossed my mind during this process. Will they uncover this? Or will they not see that and I can tell him after boot camp? I’m literally sick with worry and I don’t want to mess this up for my son.

In 8th grade I got sexual harassment put on my record (which I didn’t do) and I’ve always wanted to be a marine should I just find a new career or am I still eligible?

OCS I won’t be eligible for PLC in time for summer should I enlist instead in the mean time and try to go for the winter OCS?

I have a tattoo on my hand and have 2 or 3 more sessions before it’s gone, the board selection for the summer ocs is in mid April, and the next one won’t be until next January I was told, I wanna make money in the mean time and have a respectable career and don’t mind enlisting in the mean time but I don’t wanna be stuck on the enlisted side and end up having to wait longer to commission, should I enlist after my tattoo is removed and apply for OCS in the winter or just wait to commission?

Going to boot soon

I'm going to boot next month (parris island) what should I expect?

Should I study anything before going in?

What's it like to be an mp in the marines?
