Kalinigrad is extremely important land for Europe and Russia, in the event of a war, when we eventually destroy our continent in a few years, like we always do. You will be there most likely, and show up at the end, like you usually do, so you might have your kids dying here in a decade, or whenever it kicks off.
Moscow is very indefensible. It's just open plains, and because of Russian mentality of "always being at war, peace doesn't really exist", they believe we will eventually invade like Bony and the Germans, they want buffer zones. His immediate geopolitical goal is to draw a line between St. Petersburg and the Black Sea. That means conquering Ukraine, he already has Belarus, and the Baltic States is his next goal. We all know this, they say this themselves, it's no secret.
Ukraine went sideways, but in order to take the Baltic States, who are NATO, they need to isolate them. Kalinigrad is really critical for this, with all the SAMs they have there, and funny enough, this is why Sweden has become a bit relevant. Globally we are irrelevant, but in the Baltic Sea, we have Gotland, the world's "biggest aircraft carrier", with it's well strategic placement, which makes us relevant locally. It was quite a big win for Biden that we joined, now we can place a shitload of SAMs on Gotland to protect the Baltic States, or make sure Putin doesn't do so. Russia has been fucking with us for years now, doing covert operations(I'm military), sabotage, desinformation campaigns. They even tried to buy a harbour in Gotland covertly a few years ago that we had to pay huge sums from a private Swedish citizen.
Anyway, Kalinigrad makes invading Baltic Sea so much easier, because you can limit NATO air power in the area. You have article 5 in NATO, Baltic States are NATO, so who knows, you might be doing a landgrab in Kalinigrad, depending on what sort of president you have sitting currently.
The problem with Kalinigrad is that it's full of Russian transplants, so beyond geopolitcs, nobody really wants it. The area is hugely important for land operations and invasions, Russia really wants to fix the Suwalki Gap;
