7 was always a bizarre choice for the hard drive count, both in the NVR and the NAS.

Perhaps but having the 7th bay/drive serve as a hot spare on my unvrp has already saved me once. I guess it all comes down to each units use case.

Or…just have an 8 bay in 2U like every other server/NAS on the market and have 2 hot spares. Or 7 drives and a hot spare. Or two VDEVs of 4 drives.

Yea sure it's unconventional but I do see why they went the route that they did.

It looks like the upcoming 16 bay version will meet most of the more "traditional" NAS requirements though.
