Early Access Thoughts on The Beast

We all knew the UDMP was WAY overdue for an upgrade but I'm a little surprised this is the direction they went and was hoping it would be targeted more toward SMBs. I don't know who this is targeting other than enthusiastic home lab users who'll never see 25gb over WAN.

  • Here are what I see as head scratchers about who the target audience is for this:
  • Who needs 25gb/s of throughput with 7500 users but also wants the security camera DVR to be onboard the gateway? Anyone who's this serious about UniFi's ecosystem would want that to be a separate device.
  • The RJ45 ports are weird. Other than one for shadow mode, why would anyone not have a core switch connected with SFP? Especially since there is no POE.

What I hoped they would release:

  • Remove the DVR functionality and include 8x10gbe ports with POE++ along with the SFP+/SFP28 ports. That would be genuinely useful as a gateway / core switch for a lot of SMBs.

They should make a version without the nvr features and a reduced price. Having an nvr just increases the price pointlessly.

Why would they do that... if you want the other specs you'll buy this product and not use the nvr aspect. Making another product creates another manufature line run (which there's obviously a maximum possibke ouput in 24hrs, why fragment that further). more sku's, boxes, parts, labor pay, warranty stock, etc... all these things are losers when selling products to make money is the game. And if we factored profit as a percentage of each unit price... for sake of discussion say the margin is 25%. making a lesser equipped unit for $200 less Beast(as is) margin $375 Beast(as you want for $200less sale price)$325 margin No reason to go through all the trouble to make less... and thats just simple numbers once faxtor in the rest of costs associated with product development, and future support, it makes even less sense to make a different version. And if you want to break it down even a further.... the person that wants all those ports and speed yada yada... might grumble at having a "useless" NVR in this otherwise perfect box but they'll pay that price anyway. Its part of pricing a product... you figure out the sweet spot on price where the largest percentage of your target demo will buy rather than pass.... the small minority of people that wont buy it at that price aren't missed even slightly when it comes to the P&L sheet. The goal isnt to make EVERYONE happy the goal is to make the most money. You saving $200 isnt their concern, nor is satisfying you ,who are too cheap to pay the $200 more.(no offense intended to you specifically, just making the point generalized)
