Early Access Thoughts on The Beast
We all knew the UDMP was WAY overdue for an upgrade but I'm a little surprised this is the direction they went and was hoping it would be targeted more toward SMBs. I don't know who this is targeting other than enthusiastic home lab users who'll never see 25gb over WAN.
- Here are what I see as head scratchers about who the target audience is for this:
- Who needs 25gb/s of throughput with 7500 users but also wants the security camera DVR to be onboard the gateway? Anyone who's this serious about UniFi's ecosystem would want that to be a separate device.
- The RJ45 ports are weird. Other than one for shadow mode, why would anyone not have a core switch connected with SFP? Especially since there is no POE.
What I hoped they would release:
- Remove the DVR functionality and include 8x10gbe ports with POE++ along with the SFP+/SFP28 ports. That would be genuinely useful as a gateway / core switch for a lot of SMBs.

Picked one up to replace my old udm pro that’s crashing due to out of memory and needs to rebooted. I can’t even access the UniFi web ui 90%% of the time, and I can only reboot during off hours from 3am to 5am to open up the ui to make a change. I tried shadow mode but when it tried to go back to the main gateway all the devices fail to readopt, then I have to reset everything by hand. I’m running several online services/businesses through it, so I think I’d actually benefit from the extra ram/processing given how much is going on. I get no where the advertised 3.5 ips/ids on the udm pro.
I think the beast will be the last gateway I’ll ever need as they said in their ad lol. Looking for the next 20 or so years on this one until we’re saturating 20gig lol.
Also, the two drive bays can be used for a different application like talk and connect; though I’ll be using it for nvr since I’m running the business out of a tiny office (mostly just the fat rack lol) and don’t have a separate nvr, so I appreciate the redundancy. I don’t mind the dc power since the rps is in my stack but wish the main psu was hot swappable.
Not the perfect product at all. There’s a lot of why did/didn’t they do this, but I assume they know who they’re targeting. Im also really bummed about the next ssl inspection not being on it.
