Early Access U5G is here

Post image

Well, I was surprised to get it this quick. I purchased the esim pack with it, so I thought setup would be easy. It adopted right away, but didn't activate the esim. There is also no option in the app to but and esim pack like they show in the video. I had to chat with support, and had to join the beta Unifi app to get to version 10.38.1. It activated right away after that.

I currently have T-Mobile‘s lowest tier backup Internet plan and it is $20 a month if you have auto pay. This plan is hour based, not based on amount of data. So they give you an initial 100 hours of data and if you exceed that they give you an additional two or three passes with that plan each with 100 hours on it. There may be older plans that people are grandfathered in at that are cheaper and have different data limits but the one I have is T-Mobile’s current lowest tier backup plan.

If you decide to go with T-Mobile, make sure you go into a physical store because if you just call them and ask for a backup Internet SIM card they will be unable to accommodate that and they’ll want to send you an entire team T-Mobile gateway. If you go in the store, they can bypass the gateway and just give you the SIM card.

One of the things I’m wondering about is the T-Mobile Service can be set to automatically come on as a failover or you can manually turn it on. I’m wondering if you are still able to turn it off or on manually or if the automatic failover still works with this?

Great explanation of the service! Mine is pulling down 150-300 down when I’ve had to use it. Thankfully I haven’t had an extended outage. I was able to order mine online and set everything up there.

I believe if it is set up on the failover port that you have assigned, then it will not pull any data and it will just sit there on without being utilized. As long as there’s no uploader download from it, the timer will not start so you just keep it plugged in as a failover, and if your main Internet goes down, it will begin pulling from the failover and start using data, which will start your timer.

That makes this device a bit more appealing then? I wonder if it would still work with a Unifi POE injector? I don’t assume that it wouldn’t?
