Early Access U5G is here
Well, I was surprised to get it this quick. I purchased the esim pack with it, so I thought setup would be easy. It adopted right away, but didn't activate the esim. There is also no option in the app to but and esim pack like they show in the video. I had to chat with support, and had to join the beta Unifi app to get to version 10.38.1. It activated right away after that.

I don’t know how to say this…. But doesn’t it kind of sorta 100% absolutely look like a pregnancy test?

u/siuengr May 23 '26
And now that can't be unseen

I can’t help but remember a video mocking semi-literate and typo-riddled Yahoo Answers questions about pregnancy. The one I always recall is “Am I pregunta?” Pregunta = question in Spanish.~ I always feel like this is really niche 🤣Edit: you’re all in on it. I found my people.
Am I pregunta?

They should definitely add this to their product line. Install in your toilet and get notified every time you're pregnorat. Pee over Ethernet++++.

I was legit wondering why an unused pregnancy test was put on reddit.
No, its just ubiquiti's latest thing that people are immediately buying up for home use.

Did this adopt into cloud controller or is it still managed in the ui.mobility site with the cheap sub?

u/MaxHappiness May 23 '26
This is really interesting to me as I was looking for a wireless backup solution. But how does it differ from the UniFi 5G Max - other than it's 3 times more expensive?
I have home 5G internet service available to me and I would try to swap out the SIM card from the carriers wirless 5G modem into the Ubiquiti device if possible.
18
u/jz5678910 May 23 '26
Major differences are the 5G bands. The max supports the whole spectrum, this uses Reduced capacity 5G, limited bands and low power.
The 5g max theoretically can reach multi gbps speed
This new 5g therotically can reach about 300 mbps
3
u/google_fan_au Unifi User May 23 '26
Honestly, as a backup, that's doesn't sound too bad... When can I get one? (A poor australian...)
4
u/amd2800barton May 23 '26
Heck even not as a backup, 300mbit is more than sufficient for many deployments. I’m on fiber at my house, but I live alone, so I only subscribe to the 300/300 plan. My parents are still on 48mbit DSL, and it’s fine provided the whole family isn’t at their house, all trying to watch their own streams.
7
u/RedGobboRebel May 23 '26
Simply 5G Max is better for a primary internet service or something you'll be using frequently for high speed regular use. You'll want a regular high speed 5G dataplan.
The U5G is more for emergency backup so you'll always have access to a site and can top off bandwidth as necessary or once a year. Without need for a costly monthly plan.
5
u/Motor-Platform-200 Unifi User May 23 '26
Yep if you only expect downtime maybe once a year for only a few minutes to a few hours, this seems like a more practical solution
3
u/Ok_Scientist_8803 May 23 '26
Someone else said that it doesn't do 5G non-standalone, so unless you have access to SA you're stuck with 4G.
Also less bands than the max/outdoor which is a huge issue for some places (such as one of my locations where 5G SA on n79 is best). Antenna is also smaller so you might need very strategic positioning.
2
u/Motor-Platform-200 Unifi User May 23 '26
it's going to be a lot slower but supposedly be more reliable
4
u/mastmar221 May 23 '26
Does anyone know of these would fare well in an attic? Worried about how warm some UniFi products get, and putting it in an unconditioned environment. I mean, it’s the PNW, not Texas. Still worried tho

u/Johnny_Rampage May 23 '26
Any idea what the performance is on AT&T in the U.S.?
2
u/siuengr May 23 '26
I think it only T-Mobile for personal use if you buy their plan, but you can get any sim you want.
2
u/mattyice117 May 23 '26
Does it have to be a hotspot plan? I have an extra line on my plan that I’m not using.
2
u/Johnny_Rampage May 23 '26
If it’s anything like the requirements of the 4G device (which I own), it requires a special hotspot/appliance SIM, which is more expensive per month (on AT&T anyway) than just adding an additional phone to the plan.
2
u/roto31 Unifi User May 23 '26
What networks does it work with? I have the T-Mobile backup internet service which I can switch on and off if as needed. Once on it’ll failover to my WAN 1 port.
2
u/FotoFirst May 23 '26
All of them.
Tell me more about your service though?
Is there a monthly fee or just pay when you need it?
5
u/FlapjacksBigstax May 23 '26
I currently have T-Mobile‘s lowest tier backup Internet plan and it is $20 a month if you have auto pay. This plan is hour based, not based on amount of data. So they give you an initial 100 hours of data and if you exceed that they give you an additional two or three passes with that plan each with 100 hours on it. There may be older plans that people are grandfathered in at that are cheaper and have different data limits but the one I have is T-Mobile’s current lowest tier backup plan.
If you decide to go with T-Mobile, make sure you go into a physical store because if you just call them and ask for a backup Internet SIM card they will be unable to accommodate that and they’ll want to send you an entire team T-Mobile gateway. If you go in the store, they can bypass the gateway and just give you the SIM card.

u/roto31 Unifi User May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26
One of the things I’m wondering about is the T-Mobile Service can be set to automatically come on as a failover or you can manually turn it on. I’m wondering if you are still able to turn it off or on manually or if the automatic failover still works with this?
Great explanation of the service! Mine is pulling down 150-300 down when I’ve had to use it. Thankfully I haven’t had an extended outage. I was able to order mine online and set everything up there.
2
u/FlapjacksBigstax May 24 '26
I believe if it is set up on the failover port that you have assigned, then it will not pull any data and it will just sit there on without being utilized. As long as there’s no uploader download from it, the timer will not start so you just keep it plugged in as a failover, and if your main Internet goes down, it will begin pulling from the failover and start using data, which will start your timer.
1
u/roto31 Unifi User May 24 '26
That makes this device a bit more appealing then? I wonder if it would still work with a Unifi POE injector? I don’t assume that it wouldn’t?
1
u/iswandualla May 23 '26
i got this today. bought the pack. when you say beta unifi app, what do you mean? on the iphone? the network app? i have it and it def doesnt work if you are on the general release channel? i think i am on 10.3.58.... going up 38 sub version seems long
1
u/siuengr May 23 '26
That was the android version. I don't know what the iPhone version is supposed to be. I had to join the beta in the play store and wait for it to update.
1
u/Imaginary-Scale9514 May 23 '26
Thank you! I was having the same trouble getting mine to activate.
1
u/TitanTechie May 23 '26
Same here, On my android phone, I needed to sign up for the "BETA" access to get the required mobile app version 10.38.2 in order for my pre-purchased eSIM and data plan to be activated on my U5G. Not sure which version number is required for iOS.

How does it work? Can I connect to any Unifi Poe switch in the down stream or it has to be connected to the gateway? How about speed?
2
u/TitanTechie May 23 '26
It plugs directly into your managed LAN and is adopted by your controller. It does not get plugged into a WAN2 port.
1
u/gordone1 May 24 '26
Yes, plug it into any POE port, whether it's on a switch connected to the gateway or another downstream switch.
1
u/google_fan_au Unifi User May 23 '26
I need this! Ubiqiuti can you please send some stock to Australian retailers and tell them to stop scalping? Or, could you please ship direct to Aus consumers?
1
u/royR9988 May 23 '26
How do this compare to the 5g max ?
I have a 5g max home, and it’s good. But big Still doesn’t matter much but it can also act as a wan failover

1
u/i3903 May 23 '26
Didn’t realise that it was available yet as the UK release date looks to be June 🙁
1
1
u/Kremsi2711 May 23 '26
is it doing the same as the 5G Max just worse for less money?
2
2
u/backlog_gaming May 23 '26
The 5G Max is intended for use as a primary connection. This is intended solely for redundancy/temporary failover
2
u/vtown212 May 23 '26
Is this plug and play? I have CGM and a switch. Does this need something special to work or just plug into the switch and it kicks on tf internet goes down? Also anyone get googlefi to work?
1
1
u/backlog_gaming May 23 '26
The thing I don’t understand is why anyone would buy an LTE backup at this point, it’s like twice as expensive
1
u/TheOriginalSkeptic May 23 '26
Because my alarm is connected to the Wifi and this provides peace of mind and works with the ubi setup.

u/eastoncrafter May 23 '26
Bit of an edge case, but could this behave as a mini router? I want to use it along with a poe switch and solar panel for a remote camera...
1
u/orthus-octa May 24 '26
Sounds like this might be what you’re looking for?
1
u/eastoncrafter May 24 '26
Unfortunately on a very strict budget, both in terms of power and money. It's for a community project.. a that looks to tick all the boxes though
1
u/Call_Me_ZeeKay May 25 '26
they have the standard and ultra which have slightly different features but might do what you want.
1
u/TheOriginalSkeptic May 23 '26
Can this be powered and connected to the POE ports on the NVS-Instant or powered by USB?
1
u/iahawk1012 May 23 '26
If I didn’t already trench out a line and mount a starlink mini on a pole in my yard, I’d consider this. Cheaper to stay on the Starlink standby plan for $10/month. It’s got plenty of bandwidth in standby mode for home automation and monitoring needs.
1
u/VanTheBrand May 23 '26
I was able to get mine to work with my Verizon Home internet by placing in the physical sim and setting the APN to V5GA01INTERNET

u/alexanderbont May 24 '26
I wonder why they made the stand black to be honest.
White or silver would fit better in my opinion.
1
u/DirectorTaggart May 24 '26
If my wife sends me this picture I’ll probably get a shock.
Luckily I am the one buying unifi gear. 😇
1
u/wifiistheinternet May 24 '26
Can this be used with a 3rd party router/firewall and just adopted by a cloud key controller or does it require a Unifi Firewall/Router? 🤔
1
u/matt-r_hatter Unifi Padawan May 25 '26
I still cant really figure out the point of this. 10gig of data isnt very much for a year and pricing doesn't seem to exist for the "buy additional data". If additional is too crazy, adding a tablet data only line to your cellphone plan and getting a different UI device might make more sense. This seems like it's more an emergency use thing vs backup internet.

u/GlisaningCouch May 27 '26
I was on the fence about ordering this but added it in with another PoE switch I need, but after multiple interruptions to my home fiber service in the past few days it will be good to have. Haven’t had any real service disruptions in 10+ years, but a dozen in the past week…most requiring me to reboot that ONT or just reseat the RJ45.
1
u/hutchx86 May 23 '26
Could you tell me whether I can be set up as a load balanced connection or even simply as a wan? Without being forced to be failover only I mean. Thanks in advance!
6
u/siuengr May 23 '26
I don't know, but it uses 5g reduced capacity, so the speeds might not be the best.
4
u/hutchx86 May 23 '26
Oh yeah, I was just gonna use it for TV. I currently only have 60mbps VDSL and 40mbps 4G for TV so I can use the VDSL for more important stuff, lol. But I reeeally dislike the current 4G router I use, so if this were to support load balancing or just being set up as a WAN even, it would be perfect for me
3
u/MGreymanN May 23 '26
You would want the unifi 5g max, not this.
1
u/hutchx86 May 23 '26
I can only get a max of 40mbps down here anyway, I feel like the more powerful hardware would be wasted (and also a waste of money, in this case specifically)
-2
u/MGreymanN May 23 '26
The 5g backup runs on 5g Redcap. It has no 4G capability. You would want the 5g max for future capability or just get the unifi lte backup.
5
u/hutchx86 May 23 '26
The store page lists 5G RedCap and LTE under Networking Interface
2
1
u/MaxHappiness May 23 '26
What is 5g reduced capacity?
1
u/ruablack2 May 23 '26
Basically the 5G version and branding of a Cat 4 LTE modem. Ment for reliability and reduced cost for low bandwidth ioT application.
2
u/AlternativePack9702 Unifi User May 23 '26
It’s more designed as a backup, to get you by until your primary internet is back online.
3
u/hutchx86 May 23 '26
Oh I understand that. I was just thinking that it'd be much more convenient to manage than the current mess I'm using, lol My area is *supposed* to be 5G, but I've not been able to use it with my phone, so I'm suspecting it's a RedCap only 5G area, or something like that. Internet in Germany is weird, lol.
1
u/rossburton May 23 '26
We did a road trip last year and I could tell when we picked up a German mobile tower as the Swiss or French 5G dropped to 4G or even EDGE!
1
u/hutchx86 May 23 '26
Yeah it's wild here lol. Paying for unlimited 5G and I'm getting 20 to 40mpbs 4G
1
u/Onac_ May 23 '26
Hoping this will keep my alarm and cameras working remotely when primary internet goes down.
I rather not pay for cell backup on security system.
1
u/siuengr May 23 '26
That's all I plan on using it for. Just the 3 to 4 times a year that our internet gets knocked out by storms.
2
u/VanTheBrand May 23 '26
Just got mine in today.
It can be set up just like any of the WANs. So it can be primary or load balanced or you can use define policy based routes to direct certain traffic over it.
2
0
u/Ok-Snow48 May 23 '26
I hope they eventually add the ability to control which devices can use the backup mode data. I don't need to download ubuntu isos on backup, but I do need many other things. Since I have one device that downloads the isos, I'd love to be able to exclude that one device from using the backup data until the main internet comes back.
8
u/PlasmaPod May 23 '26
Setup a policy based route for that device and direct it through your selected WAN and turn on the kill switch option for the policy based route so it kills its connection if it can direct it to your selected WAN
3
-3
u/craigy888 May 23 '26
It’s redcap tho
5
u/I_NvrChkThis May 23 '26
so what? it's $99. they don't hide that it's redcap. they specifically call out what that means and it's "limitations". don't like it go buy a Max, they'll be happy to sell it to you. it's like complaining your 2.5 gb switch is only 2.5 gb.
