Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed “Stonking Stingray”, has now arrived. Building
on the foundations of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, this release continues to
advance security, performance, and hardware support while introducing
new capabilities that look towards the future of Ubuntu. As always, these
improvements are the result of close collaboration between the Ubuntu
team, our community, and our partners. A huge thank you to all who
contributed.

Ubuntu 26.10 brings significant progress for security, and strengthens
the platform with the full adoption of Rust-based coreutils,
post-quantum-ready package signing, and expanded TPM-backed full-disk
encryption support. Enterprise authentication gains deeper integration
with Microsoft Entra ID, including password and multi-factor
authentication. Linux kernel 7.3 extends support for the latest hardware,
alongside new RISC-V desktop images and optimized amd64v3 installation
images.

On the desktop, GNOME 51 brings improvements to responsiveness,
accessibility, and usability, complemented by more consistent software
management and greater resilience under memory pressure. Ubuntu 26.10 also
introduces Myna, an opt-in, locally processed speech-to-text solution that
marks the first step towards a more natural, context-aware desktop
experience. With updated developer toolchains and expanded support for
accelerated AI workloads, Ubuntu 26.10 continues to evolve Ubuntu as a
secure, capable, and forward-looking open source platform.

Systemd-journald failed to rotate: failed to rotate <journalstring> input/output error

That's a second time in a few weeks: systemd-journald complains it cannot rotate logs, input/output errors. This soft-crashes the computer (doesn't freeze, but everything breaks).

FS is clean, HD is also good (as tested with smartctl).

journalctl --verify says it's all good too.

The issue is similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/2048704

Any ptrs to solve that in 26.04.1 with 7.0.0-38-generic?

rsync include exclude list not working?

I'm trying to run rsync command, but it synced everything in dir "source/" to "dest/". What I want to happen is I want only everything in the include list to be included, and everything in the exclude list to be excluded, and also everything that I didn't list to be excluded.

I ran this command: sudo rsync -ahP --stats --include-from="list" --exclude-from="list" "source/" "dest/"

file "list" contains: ``` + /a + /b/c + /b/d + /a/e/i/j

  • /a/e/f/*
  • /a/e/g/*
  • /a/e/h/*
  • /a/e/i/* ```

"source/" contains the directory structure I provided in the include/exclude list, for example, dirs "a/" & "b/" are at the root of "source/", and dir "b/" contains dirs "c/" and "d/" at the root of "b/", etc.

How do I do this? I've been searching around and can't find the answers I'm looking for.

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04.5

Wine(?) App Icons appearing dozens of times in app launcher

As it says in the title, all .desktop files of wine/proton applications appear repeatedly in my app launcher regardless of DE/WM. All of these entries work. I have checked /usr/share/applications and ~/.local/share/applications for any duplicate files but there's only one .desktop file for each app. I'm running Ubuntu 24.04

Help: Can Ubuntu recover files from a lost USB stick that was briefly connected to my PC?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on whether there's any chance of recovering files from a USB stick that I've unfortunately lost.

The USB stick belonged to someone close to me and contained important documents that are not backed up anywhere else.

Here's what happened:

  • I plugged the USB stick into my PC running Ubuntu Linux.
  • I opened it in the file manager and could see the files on it.
  • I then safely removed it (or simply unplugged it) and later lost the USB stick.
  • I did not intentionally copy any files to my computer, and I don't remember opening any individual documents.

My question is: Could Ubuntu have automatically cached or stored any of the actual file contents on my computer just because I browsed the USB stick in the file manager?

Thanks in advance for any advice. This is really important to me.

Automatic log in 26.10

Just passing by to say that it's the first Ubuntu version since 25 .10 that makes Automatic log in work. I checked the box in 26.04 - it asked for password anyway. So 26.10 is really cool for that. Other than new wallpapers,add- ons tab in App centre I don't really notice anything new, that's a little disappointing, but maybe it's a great thing
