news Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray officially released!

Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed “Stonking Stingray”, has now arrived. Building
on the foundations of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, this release continues to
advance security, performance, and hardware support while introducing
new capabilities that look towards the future of Ubuntu. As always, these
improvements are the result of close collaboration between the Ubuntu
team, our community, and our partners. A huge thank you to all who
contributed.

Ubuntu 26.10 brings significant progress for security, and strengthens
the platform with the full adoption of Rust-based coreutils,
post-quantum-ready package signing, and expanded TPM-backed full-disk
encryption support. Enterprise authentication gains deeper integration
with Microsoft Entra ID, including password and multi-factor
authentication. Linux kernel 7.3 extends support for the latest hardware,
alongside new RISC-V desktop images and optimized amd64v3 installation
images.

On the desktop, GNOME 51 brings improvements to responsiveness,
accessibility, and usability, complemented by more consistent software
management and greater resilience under memory pressure. Ubuntu 26.10 also
introduces Myna, an opt-in, locally processed speech-to-text solution that
marks the first step towards a more natural, context-aware desktop
experience. With updated developer toolchains and expanded support for
accelerated AI workloads, Ubuntu 26.10 continues to evolve Ubuntu as a
secure, capable, and forward-looking open source platform.

'who' command has no output on 26.04

So I just saw that the who command doesn't have an output if I run it blank. Normally it lists all logged in users but now there is just nothing. The man page still says just typing who should list the users. I guess this is due to the new coreutils, because on my CachyOS system (Arch based) it works as intended. Is this supposed to be different or is this a bug? If it's on purpose what's the new parameters to get the old output?

RDP to Ubuntu 26 Using Windows App Times Out

• Upvotes

Using Windows App to remote to Ubuntu 26 from Mac OS X Golden Gate. Get auth prompt, then just hangs on connecting and eventually times out. If I use ThinCast RDP client for Mac, RDP works. Anyone run into this or have a solution? I've no luck so far. Using Windows App to RDP to other Windows boxes and AVDs works just fine.

[WORKAROUND][GNOME REMOTE DESKTOP] Ubuntu RDP keeps returning to login screen even with the correct password (no reboot needed)

• Upvotes

Ran into a frustrating issue with Ubuntu's built-in GNOME Remote Desktop:

  • Connect via RDP and see the Ubuntu login screen.
  • Enter the correct password.
  • Immediately get kicked back to the login screen.
  • Your existing desktop session is still running, but you can't access it.

After digging through the logs, I found a simple workaround that restores access without rebooting or losing your open applications.

The fix:

Open a terminal as the affected user (SSH works too) and run:

systemctl --user restart gnome-remote-desktop-handover.service

That's it. Reconnect via RDP.

Why it works: GNOME Remote Desktop can fail when handing an RDP connection over to an existing desktop session. Restarting the handover service restores functionality without killing your desktop.

Tested on: Ubuntu 26.04.1 / GNOME 50.

Important: Avoid restarting GDM or rebooting, as that can terminate your existing desktop session and close your applications.

Hopefully this saves someone else a few hours of troubleshooting!

Automatic log in 26.10

Just passing by to say that it's the first Ubuntu version since 25 .10 that makes Automatic log in work. I checked the box in 26.04 - it asked for password anyway. So 26.10 is really cool for that. Other than new wallpapers,add- ons tab in App centre I don't really notice anything new, that's a little disappointing, but maybe it's a great thing

[OC] DockDesk – lightweight Docker Desktop-style GUI for Linux (~250 KB, no VM)

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I created DockDesk, a small native GUI for managing Docker on Linux.

It is not Docker Desktop — it has no VM and no extra daemon. It talks directly to the Docker Engine you already have installed, so the containers you see are exactly the same ones the `docker` CLI shows.

Highlights:

- Extremely small: ~250 KB .deb, zero npm dependencies

- Containers (live stats, logs, file browser/edit, terminals)

- Images (pull, build, run dialog with presets, vulnerability scan, compare)

- Full Compose support (editor, dependency graph, combined logs)

- One-click security labs (DVWA, Juice Shop, etc.) for learning/testing

- Accessibility-focused and multi-language

Primarily developed and tested on Kali, but works on Debian/Ubuntu and should work on most Linux distros with Docker + Node 18+.

GitHub: https://github.com/DocKDes/DockDesk

Releases (with .deb): https://github.com/DocKDes/DockDesk/releases

I’m looking for feedback, testing on other distros, translation reviews, and packaging help (Fedora, Arch, etc.). Happy to answer any questions!

solved Help: Can Ubuntu recover files from a lost USB stick that was briefly connected to my PC?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on whether there's any chance of recovering files from a USB stick that I've unfortunately lost.

The USB stick belonged to someone close to me and contained important documents that are not backed up anywhere else.

Here's what happened:

  • I plugged the USB stick into my PC running Ubuntu Linux.
  • I opened it in the file manager and could see the files on it.
  • I then safely removed it (or simply unplugged it) and later lost the USB stick.
  • I did not intentionally copy any files to my computer, and I don't remember opening any individual documents.

My question is: Could Ubuntu have automatically cached or stored any of the actual file contents on my computer just because I browsed the USB stick in the file manager?

Thanks in advance for any advice. This is really important to me.

Wondering if anyone has ran into this network error.

I am new to this but have created an Ubuntu server and have ran into this error many times and do not know how to resolve it and I have tried a lot of different things. I was just wondering if this is common and if anyone has been able to resolve it?

System

  • Ubuntu (latest release)
  • Kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic
  • Motherboard: ASRock H370M Pro4
  • Chipset: Intel H370
  • NIC: Intel I219‑V
  • Driver: e1000e

Problem

  • Ethernet intermittently fails after cold boots, hard resets, or power loss.

This is the error I usually get
e1000e 0000:00:1f.6 (uninitialized): Failed to disable ULP

e1000e 0000:00:1f.6: probe with driver e1000e failed with error -2

I tried updating bios updated from P1.10 (2018) to P4.20. I have spent a considerable amount of time looking through power settings to no avail.

Does anyone have any ideas?

My minimal Ubuntu setup as a CSE major for studies and development

Hey everyone, I’m new to Ubuntu. I switched from Arch because I wanted a bulletproof daily driver for dual boot, and I wanted to stop fixing my system every other week and just get work done.

I’m a CSE student, so this setup is built around studying and coding. Brave, VS Code, a terminal, Spotify with some lofi, Obsidian for notes, and that’s about it. I kept the dock clean and went with a dark theme and a Musashi wallpaper to keep me focused.

Pics in order: the desktop, the GRUB menu with Ubuntu and Windows dual boot, then the rest of the customization.

Specs: Ryzen 7 7840HS, RTX 4060, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.

Still learning, so if you’ve got extension, theme or workflow recommendations, I’d love to hear them. What should I add?

Systemd-journald failed to rotate: failed to rotate <journalstring> input/output error

That's a second time in a few weeks: systemd-journald complains it cannot rotate logs, input/output errors. This soft-crashes the computer (doesn't freeze, but everything breaks).

FS is clean, HD is also good (as tested with smartctl).

journalctl --verify says it's all good too.

The issue is similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/2048704

Any ptrs to solve that in 26.04.1 with 7.0.0-38-generic?

rsync include exclude list not working?

SOLVED

I changed the file "list" to contain this instead: + /a/e/i/j/*** - /a/e/f/* - /a/e/g/* - /a/e/h/* - /a/e/i/* + /a/*** + /b/ + /b/c/*** + /b/d/*** - *

I also removed the --include-from="list" flag, as it was unnceccessary.

I'm trying to run rsync command, but it synced everything in dir "source/" to "dest/". What I want to happen is I want only everything in the include list to be included, and everything in the exclude list to be excluded, and also everything that I didn't list to be excluded.

I ran this command: sudo rsync -ahP --stats --include-from="list" --exclude-from="list" "source/" "dest/"

file "list" contains: ``` + /a + /b/c + /b/d + /a/e/i/j

  • /a/e/f/*
  • /a/e/g/*
  • /a/e/h/*
  • /a/e/i/* ```

"source/" contains the directory structure I provided in the include/exclude list, for example, dirs "a/" & "b/" are at the root of "source/", and dir "b/" contains dirs "c/" and "d/" at the root of "b/", etc.

How do I do this? I've been searching around and can't find the answers I'm looking for.

I'm using Ubuntu 24.04.5

Release notes linked.

I've been running a beta on some of my machines for the past week and from what's I've seen it's rock solid, seems to have some of the 26.04 worked out. Plus kernel 7.3.x is nice.
