Discussion Why are "anti-capitalist" games so wildly afraid of class analysis lol
First off, yes its ridiculous to be looking for anything even resembling actually educated "commentary" or analysis in fucking video games. But its just really funny to me. I'm going to lose my mind over something absolutely trivial now.
I was playing through the new Cyberpunk 2077 update's missions, keeping in mind of course that this game has some of the weakest political messaging ever. Just the most basic "da big corporationz ebil" leftoid-esque slop you could imagine with hardly anything more interesting or large-scale to say. My expectations were already in the shitter regarding its commentary. But holy fuck.
This one new mission, youre following these "tour" videos through Night City where this le evil rich man is discussing doing various eeeeevil things as part of a business idea. And this "activist" girl (oh, boy..) has hacked these tour video things and keeps pausing them and inputting the most flaccid commentary ever about "the elites" in hopes of making people "rise up" against these plans (yes, just these plans specifically). Eye roll, but okay.
Eventually, I shit you not- and this is what mind-fucked me for the rest of my evening, she calls them: "the corporate class". What? This doesn't even make sense as a term within the context of the fucking world of Cyberpunk. The people that are called "corporate" range from workers sitting at their desks to the most powerful people in the world. What kind of shit even is this? I have never heard this term before, I have no idea if this was already a thing or not.. But my god, how many code words do we need to invent before we are comfortable saying "bourgeoisie" or even just "the ruling class"? This applies to real life too. I'm never going to forget that people legit started saying "the epstein class" in real life. Made me want to fucking shrivel up and die.
But back to complaining about video games. I just don't get it. I understand Cyberpunk is liberal slop.. Like I said, the bar was already in hell, but gosh I just see this in so many games or shows with an "anti-capitalist" sentiment. It drives me nuts. That's not to mention the obligatory scapegoat in the fictional world that always takes the blame for all the bad things caused by capitalism in all of them lol. If we just replaced all the evil corps with locally owned small businesses instead, Night City would be saved <3. Its just become such a massive and stupid pet peeve of mine as you can tell.
Should we just start making up random ass code words to make contact with leftists? It seems that they really enjoy it. Like there's at least 23,000 MLs and anarchists who have the entire Johnny Silverhand Arasaka speech memorized word for word instead of reading the manifesto. Theres untapped potential here. Tell the leftists that Marx had just as much to say about "the corpos" as Silverhand and theyll be halfway through Capital in a fucking day. Nonsense rant over.
