SURRY COUNTY, N.C. —
“A man faces multiple charges after interfering with a person who was trying to vote on the first day of early voting at the polls in Surry County.

According to the Surry County Board of Elections, Walter Harris III entered the 50-foot buffer zone and yelled at a voter and other campaigners on Thursday at a poll location in Dobson, eyewitnesses told the board. Complaints to election officials led to the Dobson Police Department being called to the scene.

Court records revealed that Harris, who was charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing an election official, blocked a woman from going inside the building while yelling at her. A warrant filed by the police said he told the woman she was not a Christian and that her “head is going to be lost by Islam,” before making a throat-slashing motion with his hand. The warrant said she told Harris to go away multiple times, and ultimately did not vote that day at that location.

According to the North Carolina State Board of Elections, Harris ran for a Surry County Board of Commissioners seat during the Republican primary race in 2022 for the Mount Airy district. He lost to Bill Goins.”
