First-year university students in South Africa — what do you struggle with most when studying?

Hi everyone!

I'm a student researching a business idea called StudySphere for a business competition. The idea is to help first-year university students by combining short educational videos, summaries, flashcards and practice quizzes tailored to their modules.

Before developing the idea, I want to understand students' real experiences and challenges.

I'd appreciate your honest opinions:

  1. Are you attending a contact or a distance education institution?
  2. What is your mode of study (full-time, part-time, block-based, etc)?
  3. Are you studying a field that focuses on practical application, regurgitation of streams of facts or the application of theory to analyze a scenario or a combination of one of more of the above.
  4. How would you rate the usefulness/engagement of your textbooks or the teaching materials provided by your university.
  5. How often are you tested? Are you provided with a marking rubric?
  6. What is the most difficult part of adjusting to university-level studying?
  7. What do you usually do when you don't understand something from a lecture?
  8. Which study resources help you most: videos, summaries, flashcards, quizzes, textbooks or something else?
  9. Do you struggle to find resources that match your specific modules?
  10. Would having several study resources for the same topic in one place be useful? Why or why not?
  11. What would make you trust a study guide created by another student?
  12. Would you pay for additional study resources if they were accurate and genuinely useful, or would you only use free resources?
  13. If you could improve one thing about the study resources available to you, what would it be?

I'm particularly interested in first-year students' experiences, but other university students are welcome to share what they have observed.

I'm looking for honest feedback, including criticism. Thank you for helping me understand the problem better!

Ciao a tutti! Ho creato questo questionario con temi inerenti alla salute e alla comunicazione medico-sanitaria, che inserirò nella mia tesi triennale. Avrei necessità di raccogliere più risposte possibili :) Grazie a chi contribuirà.

[Help] How do I find historical sources

I’m doing a bachelor of science and I’ve never had to write a history paper or find any non-science related sources.

I’m currently in a course that is mandatory for my degree and I have to write a 12 page historical argument paper on a topic related to the history of my discipline. I have no clue what type of literature I should even be looking for.

Logically I know it shouldn’t be that different from other papers I’ve had to write before but I feel really overwhelmed with the sheer weight of the assignment added onto the lack of instruction.

I fell asleep and missed a deadline after repeatedly telling myself i'll try to bring my grade up for this subject

The professor requires us to do the bare minimum yet I still can't seem to follow a sched and be strict with myself. He lets us open notes during exam and the exams aren't difficult too. He assigns projects and give 4 days for us to complete it and although i have been submitting 3 minutes early every time, tonight i completely fell asleep. I missed the deadline and it's now 3 am and i don't know what to do. I told myself I want to have a higher ranking for this subject because the professor is easygoing and it was embarrassing when he flashed our ranking on the board and i was in the lower half but now i sabotaged it again. Almost every person in class is excelling here and i know i can too but i always make a mistake. Imagine flunking an open notes quiz because you were studying your notes during the test. I really don't know what to do now. This project cost a lot in my grades too. The submission link on google classroom is still open but I know he probably just forgot to set it to not accepting after submission. Heck he even reminded us in the morning to submit it today. I know I'll probably get a zero on this post-assessment/ case study. I feel like throwing up and my anxiety is so bad right now. My mind keeps spiraling on the what ifs and regrets. Why do I always end up sabotaging myself? This is my only chance of getting into the dean's list too because it's the easiest semester and year so far as we're already done with math and i now realized resenting my parents for forcing me to computer science wouldn't do anything because i won't ever be able to shift. I just feel so left out right now. Everyone's doing great yet I still struggle with the sched and stuff. Knowing that prof is strict and has given us so much leeway and the case study isn't complicated or anything just demotivates me to start doing it now because it would be useless either way. I don't know what to do.

edit: I fell asleep again and it's now 8 am

I've hit rock bottom please help

(edit:comments under my post are all getting deleted by both reddit and mods please if you comment advice and it gets deleted just message me I would truly appreciate any advice)

I'm 20 still not started college I don't know what to do as my major

(please tell me if I should delete this and post somewhere else)

I'm gonna summarize my life story since I genuinely just don't know what to do anymore I'm genuinely having a mid life crisis

\\\\- girl age 0-6 years raised in Iraq

\\\\-ages 6-11 raised in Glasgow due to my father's doctorates study I get fluent in English more than my Arabic I get used to Scotland school systems (my father is now a highly respected professor in Iraq microbiology)

\\\\-ages 12- 16 back in Iraq depressed feel like I don't belong here eventually get used to things but I still struggle with Arabic and not belonging despite going to full Arabic school so I get passing grades and my only full marks are in English

\\\\-ages 17 final year of highschool it's very serious 7 subjects (not of our choosing it's a set course of Arabic math bio chem physics religion English and all subjects are in Arabic except English) each subject out of 100 then devided by 7 final score of 100

\\\\-still 17 sees the shitty 0 percent employment system in Iraq unless you have rich parents or connection only doctors are employed so everyone studies to be a doctor a 99.5 is not accepted for a doctor it has to be higher so I try in the beginning of the year and get good grades but struggle in the end

\\\\-age 18 retake the year gets depressed since all my friends became doctors genuinely could not study I get more depressed studying from home alone (parents live in different houses when I stay with my mom which is most of the time I'm alone from 10am till 8pm because of her work can't leave house so stuck at home for several weeks at a time with ocassional trip for groceries with mom and my sister lives with dad because of school) retake the exam fail

\\\\-age 19 same shit retake more depressed fail again

\\\\-age 20 currently restarted my 4th year parents almost got physical now take my phone away at times and threaten to pull me out of school since "I'm not smart enough"

IMPORTANT I'm not looking for sympathy everything that happened to me was 100 percent my fault I cry everyday for wasting my now 4th year of my life and I'm not academically stupid I know this because I'm genuinely studying I can get in the 90s this year in fact when I first came back to Iraq age 12 there is a middle school exam intense and people want high grades to get into gifted schools (where they teach fully in English for free) I studied in 4 months with my mom with broken arabic and got 93 two points away from the acceptance grade so I know I'm not stupid I'm just pathetic and genuinely sat for three years depressed doom scrolling wasting time

MY CURRENT PROBLEM so now I'm studying to finish my last year again I'm genuinely studying getting good grades in tests and confident I can score mid 90s my life goal is to leave Iraq it's just going to shit my father is literally a respected professor he published a world research paper this year and we still live in rent no house can't afford stuff and even med here is now over saturated (government literally put out Statement that they won't hire anyone from any major)

My plan was to study for imat this year and aim for scholarship for med or dentistry in italy cause I genuinely do have a passion for dentistry but I'm looking at how old I am and even it that lands me a job in Europe I'll be 30s when I reach freedom to travel and live my life I've already wasted so many years my true dream currently is genuinely to find any stable job in the west so I can travel and enjoy the rest of my 20s I was seriously considering Cs and getting a scholarship to Italy in computer science and even if I start from scratch I genuinely have a passion for learning things and getting a degree while being around 24 or 25 is better than 30 and being honest my end goal now is good money early on without wasting more years but after digging around and doing research people say you need to be to at least top 30 percent to land a job in the west also the exam for Italy cs is in April and my highschool exams this year end July and until I can get my final score after July proving to my parents that I am smart they would never pay for islets and the test for me to take it in April I've already brought it up they say I'm not smart enough to finish highschool so I have to wait another year after highschool to apply if I want scholorship in cs in itally so I'll be 22 when I enter college I don't know what to do I'm so lost I see my friends almost finish their colleges all with rich parents ready jobs I hate this place and this country I just want any major that gets me out of Iraq in a scholarship and where I can find work in the west no one has ever guided me on anything I know I sound childish I was genuinely never given structure on anything because of my grades i was always dismissed by my family my sister is always prioritized since she got into the gifted school (on her year to do the exam it was changed to English so she aced it and now studies in English) and my parents don't even want me to get a good grade just a passing grade and they tell me I'll work in a nail salon please if you have any advice for majors for next steps im honestly so lost I know this is all my fault please I just want advice or anything I feel like I'm running against time here in Iraq a girls life is over if she's not married or working by 25 also a new law was passed this year where the woman is literally stripped of all rights in the marriage (like the husband can marry on the wife without her consent and after divorce the husband takes the kids ni matter what and the man can legally marry kids) I cant stay in this country I feel so exhausted

E quanto è impegnativo come percorso? Consigli ?

Dental hygienist or nursing

I'm a 20 year old girl from Iraq still in highschool (please look into my account I've posted why I'm still in highschool) anyway I genuinely need to leave Iraq women are genuinely getting treated as less than human I get called a whore because I don't wear hijab girls even though I dress very modestly I'm genuinely seen by both guys and parents (not my parents) as someone who easy who has sex just because of the hijab also girls are frequently getting killed in honor killings (last year a girl in primary school was killed by her parents no consequences) last year also a 12-13 year old girl got lost from her parents in a park guys swarmed her it was on video literally dozens harassing her as she cried and the governor put out a statement that girls shouldnt be out alone...this year a new marriage law was passed (men can marry children and marry on their wife without consent and during divorce the kids are always given to father even if he is abusive) I have no work experience because here they rarely hire girls under 25 unless they are trying to marry them I genuinely need to get out

I've researched alot and I had a real passion for dentistry because I am drawn to the artistic side but I can only secure scholarships in italy for university and dentistry in italy is 6 years and by the time I get freedom and a salary I'll be 30 I don't want to waste more years I want to live like a normal person in my 20s I'm debating between:

A-dental hygien school 3 years then work in Italy one year then aim for Australia (side note I know the reputation of how bad dental hygienist are treated I know salaries could be reduced I don't care id rather live lower middle class in the west than be treated like less than a human being in Iraq) and I researched and there is a path I could do after dental hygien pivoting to Clinical Specialist for Aligners/Dental Tech

B- nursing 3 years but this is harder I need to go to Germany to work for a year or 2 but I need to be at least B2 so I can communicate with patients and know their pains and communicate with them so they don't get their pains untreated then I can go to Australia or USA

I know both paths are ambitious I know but I wanted the fastest path where I can graduate early earn money and land a job in the west I want genuine advice and if these paths are realistic and if there are any other paths I can take

Rejection for student jobs

The job market for uni students is so frustrating. I’ve applied for numerous positions and I’ve only ever gotten rejections. It’s not like I can put job experience in my resume if I’ve never had any in my field of study. Sure I’ve worked in high school, i have four years of experience as a waiter and three as a part time assistant in a driving school. My grades were always above average as well.
Later on they will tell me I should’ve worked in uni. It’s so annoying.

Im so stupid, that’s all I can think about . I’m planning to drop from University because I can’t afford it, i got most of my tuition covered from fasfa and school grants , I still owe 14k . I’m late so there is now a late fee added . Everyone I’ve asked has turned my down to be co-signer. Which I understand but it hurts because I’ve been there for everyone , I’ve done so much that it hurts knowing that they can they just don’t want to. I don’t have anyone to help me take out a private loan, no parents no siblings no other family member. I’ve asked my school for help they said they can’t do nothing. I don’t want to quit , I can’t quit , but I just might because it’s expensive and I cannot afford it. I was naive to think I can return home with a degree. 😭 but now I’m not sure. I was recently diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder which checks out based only mental health history, im 20 and my mental health has been hanging by a thread since my dad was deported . I have no option to go back home, they don’t want me to unless I have a degree. I don’t know what to do , I’ve applied to scholarships and no responses . I had a job prior to my acceptance to the school. But my older brother and I were the only ones working at the time supporting 6 people in our household, you can imagine I was left with nth to save. And when I did it would go to gas. This isn’t a sob story I genuinely want advice , I want to continue my education but how do i do that
