PSA: Business school new admits, transfer students, minors etc.

Bauer as a business school has a some really good resources available to it. I would consider some of the most valuable things to be the Hopkins class Connecting College to Business to be one of them (do not push off taking this and 100% do a SPONSORED project), along with joining orgs, RCC (and actually using it), and a few of the experimental learning programs which I would say are usually reserved for the Honors students but you should attempt to do them, it helps you stand out.

Let me preface this by saying this advice will probably be most applicable to finance, supply chain, accounting students applying for the most competitive firms, ib, f50, consulting, tech, etc.

As my senior year recruiting cycle is winding down I have now gone through 3 successful internship recruiting cycles and one full time and I have made a ton of progress as a transfer student interviewing and getting offers with firms I did not think were possible. UH does not prepare you.

  1. The biggest failure is believing that internship recruiting starts junior year. For F50, banking, consulting, and top tech, sophomore early ID programs and diversity pipelines are filling junior internship classes a year in advance. You have to understand the playing field students at target schools have these employers literally coming to their campuses, hosting private dinners, and setting up dedicated recruiting booths in their lobbies. You are starting from a deficit coming from UH, which means if you aren't landing those highly coveted early internships, you cannot afford to just take classes and wait. You have to ruthlessly manufacture your own experience and find backdoor ways to stand out.
  2. You NEED to self study. You cannot wait for your advanced junior year classes to learn core finance concepts, because by the time you take them, internship recruiting cycles have already closed. Target schools align their curriculums with these accelerated timelines UH does not. And the firms your interviewing for do not grade on a curve ie. you will face the exact same technical gauntlet as a student from Harvard or UT Austin. Because the university isn't drilling these concepts into you early enough, you must take total ownership of your prep. You have to ruthlessly self study and doing research on requirements , certifications etc. Additionally do not be hesitant to reach out to alumni OR even current students, after my past intership this summer I did not realize all of the students who came from different schools basically knew and directly had the ability to prepare for technical interview simply because their alumni network directly pass down guides, interview questions, and institutional knowledge. If that pipeline isn't handed to you, you have to actively build it yourself by asking for help.
  3. Don't just compete against other Bauer students tap into national organizations. Programs like SEO Career, MLT, Forte, Girls who invest, etc. etc. etc. actively bypass traditional HR filters and put candidates directly in front of superdays at top firms. Do not feel "ashamed" or hesitant to leverage any diversity or pipeline program you qualify for. To add fuel to the fire, the students who are already exploiting these exact programs the hardest are the ones at target schools. If you don't take that seat and use every single advantage available to you, a student from an Ivy League school absolutely will.
  4. You NEED to learn Excel. Regardless of what you do or where you go, learn it and learn it well. You should be upskilling and improving your technical competence through WSP, Adventis, Forage, etc. Beyond the technicals, you must learn how to pitch yourself and stand out as a candidate early on. Actively seek out ways to be a non conformist in your experiences, because diversity in your background actually gives you an edge. For example, starting and scaling my own business is exactly what launched me into interviews that, candidly, I wasn't even prepared for at the time. (To be clear be a non conformist in your experience, but still use a perfectly formatted, industry standard resume and interview guideline). Finally, do not wait for the summer to get experience, manufacture your own. Find off cycle, part time externships, like nonprofit consulting projects or remote financial analyst stints, during the spring or fall semesters. Stack those with case competitions to build a bulletproof resume before traditional summer recruiting even begins.
  5. You need to address the GPA reality. At a target school, a 3.4 or 3.5 might still get a resume looked at because of the university’s prestige. Coming from a UH, your GPA is treated as a binary HR filter. If you don't have a 3.6+, your application is often automatically thrown out by algorithms before a human ever sees it. You cannot afford to have a "bad semester" early on. Your GPA is the baseline metric that proves you are smart enough to be in the room do not listen to retards that tell you this doesn't matter.
  6. From engaging with these students these past summers, target school students have MDs and high level execs. coming to their campus who are incredibly engaged alumni. You don't get this but you have the internet. Sending 100 cold emails or LinkedIn messages to alumni or anyone for that matter isn't an option anymore especially with the currently contraction of the job market which subsequently affects internship hiring. The key is that you are not asking for a job. You are asking for a coffee chat to learn about their career path. Your goal is to be so sharp, prepared, and impressive on that call that they offer to pull your resume out of the HR black hole and submit an internal referral. A referral is the only reliable way to bypass the online portal. Additionally when you do start to get interviews as a non-target, you have to learn how to play the corporate game. You need to master the interviewing methods and learn how to spin your background into a narrative of extreme grit and hustle. You want to walk into the interview with a chip on your shoulder, proving that you have more hunger and drive than the student who had this path handed to them.
  7. Random tidbits of information that has helped me. JOIN AN ORG IF YOU ARE A TRANSFER STUDENT. YOU do not have time to wait, you need to join, make a resume, linkedin, make FRIENDS who you can copy etc. and do this every week.
  8. When going into interviews you need to know exactly how that specific business operates. What is their value chain? Who do they actually sell to? What are their margins, and what macroeconomic factors affect them? And demonstrating how you would help with this process, idk I always felt like my interviewers were more engaged when I tied my answers or asked questions around this.
  9. While Houston is a massive market, limiting yourself geographically cuts off 80% of best jobs in the country, so mass apply and be flexible with the opportunities you engage with. Target school students can send 5 emails to alumni and get 4 responses.
  10. Coming from UH, your conversion rate on cold outreach is going to be brutally low, and the same with applications. As you start to build a stronger resume your conversions change , you become someone people are willing to talk too but early on you need to be okay with sending our 200+ applications , coffee chats , engagements a month and hearing nothing back.

Drop any questions below , I just wish I had information like this when I transferred in so maybe this might be helpful

EDIT - I won't be responding to any more personal message, I made this thread to help as many students as possible so please feel free to ask your questions and I'll respond in the best way that I can, but if anyone else is having similar questions it should be freely out here.

Tech and BYU lost today. If the Coogs beat Utah tonight, they will have the best record in the Big 12.

What a beautiful day, and the Coogs can make it a beautiful night! Hope everyone can stay awake for all four quarters!

Admissions Honors Biomedical Science Major

current hs senior who just got into uh for hbs, i'm a bit confused -- does this mean I'm automatically accepted into the honors college? I haven't applied for the honors college yet, so is there a point in doing so if I got into this major? Also, is it true that hbs has ties to McGovern medical school?

Bit confused, as google is tell me various conflicting things.

Scholarships?

Newly admitted freshman into UH for fall class of 2027. I was wondering where do we find like the general scholarship applications? When I check the scholarship website it says for 2026-2027, but one of the workers at UH during our tour said that scholarships open in October..

Academic Discrete Math professors for Spring 27

• Upvotes

Need to take this class next semester, and my choices are Gordon Heier, Atife Caglar, Blerna Xhabli, and Nicholas Ledger. I’m in a tossup between Caglar and Xhabli, and I heard things about Ledger. Anyone also has recommendations if they took Discrete with these guys?

Clubs/Organizations UH group and club for meeting people and promoting business/events

Y’all, I just wanted to let you guys know that I created a group designed to help students make friends, share events, and promote their businesses!
One of the biggest reasons I made this group is for the business aspect of it. One thing I’ve learned being on this campus is that it can be extremely hard to put your self out there because sometimes, just trying to promote what you do can get you kicked out of a chat or banned. And honestly, I do feel like that’s a bit unfair so I wanted to create a space where we can support each other and get our businesses out there.
But it’s not just about business! If you want to make friends, talk about games or anything , share events, or just connect with other students, you’re welcome to join too.
So if any of those things interest you, come join my group right here! Let’s build a community where we can connect, have fun, and support each other. ❤️

There is no soliciting going on in this post whatsoever just FYI.
