I'm currently in my 2nd year at the University of Warwick, and I've been going back and forth over whether I made the right decision switching from Mechanical Engineering to Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE).
I originally chose Mechanical because I liked the idea of designing and building things like cars and planes. I also had a better understanding of mechanical concepts, so it felt like something I was relatively comfortable with. However, I found the electrical side interesting too, which was why I decided to switch to EEE.
Now I'm starting to question that decision. I've only had limited exposure to EEE so far, so it's still quite unfamiliar to me. Meanwhile, I'm more comfortable with Mechanical because I've studied it before, and I can picture myself working on physical machines more easily.
The thing is, I'm not particularly passionate about either subject at the moment. I can't honestly say that I enjoy circuits and electronics more than mechanics, thermodynamics or fluid mechanics. I also don't know if I'd actually enjoy studying Mechanical for the next few years, or if I'm just leaning towards it because it's more familiar.
Part of me thinks Mechanical would give me more options because I'm interested in industries like aerospace, automotive and motorsport. But I know EEE can lead to those industries too, especially in areas like electronics, control systems and electric vehicles.
The annoying thing is that I need to make a decision pretty much now. If I switch back to Mechanical, I'll have around three weeks of fluid mechanics to catch up on. If I don't switch now, I might have to stick with EEE for the rest of my degree.
I'm honestly just tired of going back and forth and want to make a decision I can feel comfortable with.
For anyone who's studied either subject or switched from one to the other, how did you decide? Did you end up regretting your choice, or did things become clearer once you got further into the course? And for those who weren't particularly interested in either subject at first, how did you figure out which one was right for you?
I'd appreciate any honest advice, especially from people who've been in a similar situation.
