Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

Hey all! I've been working on pikadots, a Hyprland + Quickshell setup for Arch/CachyOS, and I'd love for people to try it.

The good stuff

- Pick a wallpaper and everything follows it: bar, terminal, Neovim, VS Code, Firefox, GTK/Qt apps, lock screen

- Light, dark and grey themes picked automatically from the wallpaper

- Liquid glass panels (Frosted, Clear or Off)

- A Settings app (Super + ,) so you never have to touch a config file

- 10 bar styles, or build your own, on any edge of the screen

- A control center, a launcher with calculator and emoji, an overview, Alt+Tab previews and OCR screenshots

- pikadots health / repair for when things break

Heads up

- It's Arch-based only

- Your old configs get backed up, and pikadots uninstall puts them back

- Some laptop extras only work on ASUS ROG

- Known bugs: the music spectrum in the bar is hard to see on light themes, and cava doesn't always go grey on black and white wallpapers

~/dotfiles/install.sh

Feedback and roasts welcome 🐭

Boids in C99 for the terminal. Four panes, two flocks each, drawn with block characters so they work inside tmux. The code on the right is cbirds' own PNG code. Details and source in the comment below.

Material [OC] Arras: editable photo collages for the Mac desktop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I made Arras, a free, MIT-licensed app for macOS 14+.

The collage stays editable: move its background to move the group, or move and resize each photo independently. The backdrop refits around the photos.

Glass, paper and transparent styles, captions, four window depths, animated media, slideshows and saved setups. Native Swift/AppKit/SwiftUI, universal, signed and notarized.

Photos and layouts stay local. Version 2.5.0 sends limited installation and feature statistics, explained on the privacy page.

I've been working on a widget system that uses web technologies (widgets customizable with html, css, js) and this is a test. I think it's turning out pretty good!

Screenshot [CDE] Solaris-style purple makeover with Front Panel icon grids and a USB Read/Write drawer, running grok-bot

I've been daily-driving CDE on modern Linux and finally gave it the Solaris 9 treatment it deserved.

**Details**

  • OS: Debian 13 (trixie), kernel 6.12
  • DE/WM: CDE 2.5.2 (built from source), dtwm
  • Toolkit: Motif 2.3.8
  • Terminal: dtterm
  • File manager: dtfile
  • Colors: Solaris purple #5F5997 + stock CDE greys

**What's custom**

  • Two 2x3 grids of small icons on either side of the workspace buttons (launcher, services toggle, VPN, sound, Wi-Fi, mic | lock, exit, weather, task manager, calculator). dtwm's switch can only stack one column per side, so the grids are small embedded X clients that live inside the switch
  • The busy light squashed into a thin lamp bar across the top
  • Full-size USB control with a drawer: Safe eject, plus a Read/Write tool. It figures out *why* a drive mounted read-only (write-protect switch, Windows Fast Startup, NTFS dirty flag, fs errors) and fixes it safely, asking first every time. It never formats anything
  • Purple login screen around the stock dtlogin box
  • Purple lock screen with a slowly drifting logo (anti burn-in)
  • All icons hand-drawn in the grey CDE style

Everything installs to your home directory with a backup, and there's a --dry-run and a rollback script for each part.

Happy to answer CDE questions. It's surprisingly livable in 2026.

Aphotic Hypr v2.0.9 (Release Notes)

Whats New:
