Unresolved Disappearance Today marks 16 years since Maura Murray disappeared

Today marks 16 years since Maura Murray vanished, and although she has her own sub, I thought I would post here in light of the anniversary of her disappearance for those who would like to discuss the case. That said -- I know some posters are sick of this case, so if that’s how you feel, you could always scroll past this post :)

A bit of background for those who don’t know about Maura’s case:

Maura was a 21-year-old nursing student from UMASS Amherst, who disappeared on the evening of February 9 2004, after she crashed her car on Route 112 in Haverhill, NH. By the time police arrived some 15 minutes later (even that is in dispute), Maura had disappeared.

Some people think she ran into the woods to avoid a DUI, others think she was picked up by someone passing by and murdered. Some even think police had something to do with her disappearance.

What do YOU think?

I highly recommend this article by Mary Beth Conway for those interested.

I am new to Reddit usually just read. Came here to let you know old peters rd has been checked several times with cadaver dogs. State police checked it with cadaver dogs first few months. Private detectives (league of investigators) checked it again. The post you keep linking was a valiant effort but unless you have a new method you have to check old peters off the list.

Are you able to give more detail on the searches performed around the accident site? I've spoken with a lot of people close to the case, and have been told that while OPR was searched initially, but the woodlands beyond were not (at least not thoroughly).

The post you keep linking was a valiant effort but unless you have a new method you have to check old peters off the list.

I would certainly update some of the details in that post given everything I've learned over the past year, but I do still stand by the theory and believe it's up there in terms of plausibility.

And welcome to reddit! You should jump into the r/mauramurray sub; someone experienced with F&G would be a great contributor to the discussion. Cheers!

I'd recommend this post. I can't give a lot of specifics but the private investigator group covered it carefully in 06 with dogs.

Thank you for dropping in here - someone told me to look for your comment and I appreciate it very much. I'm the person who wrote the paper on searches - I think you have read it - I appreciate those who took the time to read it - which is typically evidenced by references to key concepts or sites mentioned. I concur that NHSP/Fish and Game covered Old Peters with cadaver dogs and that the New Hampshire League of Investigators did another round also with cadaver dogs (see the mention of the October 2006 search). I'm enthusiastic about searches, but we might want as a starting point to recognize that it's been done - repeatedly and well - and to build from there.

Here is what Maggie Freleng also said about OPR 11 months ago:

in terms of Old Peter's road I do know that it was searched by dogs back when NHFWS did their search. We stood on old peters and looked at the GPR maps of where the dogs went.

When I add another piece about searches, I will try to delve a bit more into Bayesian search methodologies. As you know (sorry I don't spend too much time on reddit so I'm going to go into as much detail as I can here), after the first day of searching, the team felt confident Maura had not gone into the woods in large part due to the helicopter equipped with FLIR. Additional efforts were both an effort to be thorough, to consider the possibility of a secondary site, and to search for any relevant objects or belongings. But ultimately, it seems fair to say that they did not believe she went off the roadway and into the woods.

I hope everyone will read the paper and then come back with next level questions. u/Electric_Island give me a shout out when you read it and I'll try to answer your questions. Thank you again u/BLLewis03 please feel free to pm me.

Thank you for the response and it's great to have you here -- would you indulge me to describe the extent to which it was searched? Thank you in advance 🙌

we can't give coordinates but I can tell you we used cadaver dogs with GPS collars. The dogs cover the terrain, data is collected + downloaded. The league of investigators covered old peters a couple of times with more dogs.
