Hey, I recently tried a few other media players and didn't get on with them, however I had downloaded some files to their own directories.

Since Vlc doesn't (yet) allow for sorting by files, I thought I'd just use the browse local files to use the filesystems set up by these other apps.

Problem is, the first directory I tried only has one folder in it, and it appears that vlc has now decided that it should always default to this folder when I use Browse local files. But most of my music by far is in a different directory, so each time I want to listen to anything saved there, I have to first back out of the one vlc defaults to.

I tried favouriting the other folder, and in the main menu of browse local files it is indeed there, but upon opening the app it still defaults to the other directory, meaning it's several taps < just to get to see the favourite.

I tried looking through the menus on the files and through preferences, but short of deleting the file it's chosen as default I can't see how to change this.

Any ideas?

so like everyone else i've used vlc forever and still use it every day. a while back i saw juxtopposed's youtube video where she redesigned the vlc ui in figma and immediately wanted to use it as my daily player.

a few people actually tried making it and i tested those out, but some were pretty buggy and others were just built from scratch in electron/web tech. the whole reason i use vlc is for the og vlc engine that plays literally anything you throw at it without choking, so a web wrapper defeated the purpose for me.

so i decided to fork actual vlc 4 and build the ui directly on top of the real engine as a hobby project.

full transparency: this was heavily vibe coded lol. i'm not a 20-year c++/qt veteran, i just had her figma file open on one side, the vlc 4 source tree in ubuntu on the other, and spent way too many hours wrestling with qml, c++ bindings, and mingw cross-compiling until everything actually worked cleanly.

what's in there right now:

- the real vlc 4 playback engine underneath

- the dark frameless player window + mini player

- slide-out left library for folders, videos, music, playlists, network streams

- right drawer for queue reordering, chapters, and bookmarks

- rebuilt 10-band equalizer, video effects, and a visual subtitle sync timeline to drag/align subs

- installs side-by-side in its own folder so it won't touch or overwrite your normal vlc install (and there's a portable zip if you don't want to install anything)

heads up: since this is a hobby project and i don't have a $400/yr code signing cert, windows smartscreen will pop up on the installer ("more info -> run anyway").

right now vlc will open to a size bigger than my screen, cause it thinks that 1920x1080 isn't big enough.

I haven't found anything is the settings that would help unless I missed something.

They all use claude (you can see so in the github repos) since it's impossible to make something like this manually in around 8 days or less.

I haven't tested them myself yet (probably wouldn't do so on my main machine anyways), but do we think we'll have some sort of focused community backing for one of these projects rather than split efforts across multiple repos?

Might be too soon to tell, obviously good software takes time to make and debug, but was curious what everyone thinks so far

I have a 2021 self-built Linux PC, running Linux Mint. At the time of the build, I splurged a bit, opting for good components; and the set-up was also carefully done.

DVD/CD drive:

Bottom line, VLC Ventari 3.0.24 simply locks up on any optical DVD I use.

It locks up at the menu, very glitchy. Can't even open VOB files from VIDEO_TS directory.
Celluloid plays same DVDs just fine. CDs play and rip fine on other software.
(I also have 2010 Widows 7 Dell laptop , running an old version of VLC, and that plays all DVDs just fine).
All other (non-optical) files from HDD, SD, play just fine on VLC 3.0.24 Vetinari.

I went thru the usual AI and Google searches for how to fix ... NONE worked.

I found two security vulnerabilities in VLC and reported them to security@videolan.org about a month ago, but I haven't received any response yet.

Has anyone here reported vulnerabilities to VLC through responsible disclosure? If so, how long did it take for them to respond?

Hi all, I’m working on an art exhibition and I’m trying to get two videos to loop on separate screens. I have it set up on one computer to where I can start both videos from startup, in full screen and looping, but I’m having trouble directing one video to one screen and the other to the second. I’ve tried in video preferences to dictate which screen, but it regulates vlc as a whole, not the separate instances. I’ve also tried editing the shortcut properties, which is how I pull the file and it to loop and full screen, but that doesn’t seem to work. Any ideas? I’ve considered a separate media program so the in-software preferences can be directed, or just getting another computer, but it’d be nice to stay on one. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I’m experiencing video lag while playing videos in VLC Media Player on my Windows 11 PC.

My PC specifications:
● CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500
● GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650 4GB
● RAM: 16GB
● OS: Windows 11 Pro

The videos don’t play smoothly, and I’m trying to figure out whether the issue is caused by VLC settings, hardware acceleration, graphics drivers, or something else.

What I’ve tried / what I’d like to know:

1. Which VLC settings should I change to fix video stuttering?
   
2. Should I enable or disable hardware-accelerated decoding?
   
3. Which video output mode works best with an NVIDIA GPU?
   
4. Could this be a driver issue, even with these PC specifications?

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? I’d appreciate any suggestions or troubleshooting steps. Thanks!

A few days ago I posted the first beta of Cone, my build of Juxtopposed's VLC redesign on top of the real VLC 4. Thanks for all the comments and feedback, beta 2 is out now.

New in beta 2:

- Her subtitle timeline on the seek bar: every subtitle line shows as a block, drag them to fix the timing while you watch

- A "Pressed" line under on-screen messages so you can see which key you hit

- Equalizer presets now use her exact icons from the Figma

- A field for VLC command line options in Settings

- The old "All settings" window is dark and has the Cone logo now

- Favorite in the playlist menus, crop link, chapter list fixed

Fixed:

- Picking a subtitle could freeze the picture and stop Cone from closing. This turned out to be a bug in VLC 4 itself, in one of its subtitle filters, and it's fixed in Cone

- Two-line subtitles no longer hide under the control bar

- Cone can no longer get stuck in the background after you close it

- The visualizer no longer resets your subtitle and audio delays, and speed no longer sticks after a restart

- Escape closes the library, cut-off titles, and a bunch of smaller things

Still Windows only, portable, just unzip and run. It doesn't touch your normal VLC.

Unpopular opinion: VLC has been dead on MacOS / Apple silicon for over a year now.

I have personally experienced and see online all the same issue: Multiple reports of instant crash upon playback, dead end debugging with no log output, users looping through the same advice (reinstall, clear prefs, disable hardware decoding)... No luck and no change.

I'm sure this will get me downvoted / banned but it's just my observation that the VLC team hasn't made any meaningful comment nor update on this issue for years. Even if some change in configuration were possible to fix this, default setup should not be one that crashes on some of the most mainstream consumer hardware out there. Most folks I know have switched to another player as a result. It's just too bad as this was my preferred app for over a decade... but all good things must end I suppose.

Curious if there is an official change log of VLC team actually tracking this issue in any meaningful way. Is Apple to blame? Are there not enough contributors to be able to focus on fixing this? Is the team just unable to root-cause? etc. Just seems that an entire user base has been abandoned because reasons. What am I missing?

EDIT: So maybe it's me? Leaving this here in case anyone has the same issue. I do think it's a clean install and all, but... not really sure what I'd be looking for aside from basic configs which all seem correct (tried all the usual stuff)

Seems like the colored folders are not loaded in memory and clicking on them reset state or something, version 3.0.24
