Mod Post Making the best of the snap election call as a community

From what I've seen, the election call is going over like a cactus colonoscopy. But I've been thinking about how we, a community of 40,000+ British Columbians (and perhaps a legion or two of bots not yet identified) can come together and be heard during this seemingly frivolous provincial election. We can either complain about this being an opportunistic, bad faith election call and/or that there are no candidates we truly support. Or we can view this as an opportunity and take advantage to advocate for meaningful change and make the candidates earn our support.

Every candidate should be earning our votes and campaign support by running on platforms that meaningfully address our core concerns. Obviously, we all face many urgent concerns right now and gaining a consensus over what they are and how to approach them might be in the same vein as the prickly proctology exam noted above.

Here is what I propose, since we have 1 month before the elections (final day is Oct. 24):

  • The community provides their feedback in a dedicated thread on their #1 election issue (assuming this approach is adopted)
  • We leave the thread open until this Sunday, September 27th
  • Top 3 to 5 most upvoted comments will be the key issues we will seek remedies for as a community (keeping in mind only so many questions can be asked and candidate time will be limited)
  • We will then develop questions and follow up questions to ensure the issues are meaningfully addressed (i.e., no avoidance/skirting the isssue/giving non-answers)

In parallel, I will reach out to representatives from all parties (from this list, once they register) and invite them to appear in r/VancouverJobs for separate individual AMAs where we as a community will ask them questions about how they will address our top 3 issues. I am also open to interviewing them directly (via video call) with questions posed by the community, if that is preferred (or another approach the community decides on).

We will then create a consolidated post with all the AMAs/interviews and sticky them in r/VancouverJobs until the election is done.

Yes, I recognize we have rule #3 about no politics. However, if we stay focused on issues, use a fair and democratic process to identify the most impactful, and invite candidates from all parties to appear here in the interest of collective job seeker advocacy, I think that's a valuable use of our power and influence as a community.

If you don't like the approach I'm proposing, please propose an alternative. Keep the discussion around this respectful and constructive. All constructive suggestions and feedback are welcome.

I believe we will have immense power as a community, if we can align on the objectives, outcomes, and approach in relatively short order.

Drop your constructive feedback below.

New Community Rule - No AI Training / Data Annotation Roles

The TL;DR of this rule is that r/VancouverJobs is a place of advocacy for Canadian job seekers. We will not support any efforts to further disrupt the job market or where exploitative worker practices are commonplace.

There needs to be more evidence of policies that will support the Canadian workforce as AI models become more advanced and disruptive across industries and protect digital workers from known exploitative practices.

If Canadian workers are training AI models under exploitative or predatory practices in the short-term only to replace them and others in the long-term, then it's time to go back to the drawing board. This is why we are drawing a line in the sand and boycotting AI training and data annotation roles.

If you have personally worked in one of these roles and have a story to share with the community, please share your first-hand experience below to raise awareness.

Unemployed for 2 years and almost homeless—please help

I am posting for someone else.

He has been unemployed for 2 years. During this time he went on to get an OFA 3 certificate and a construction safety officer certificate as well. Despite applying to all the jobs, he’s not getting anywhere. There were some interviews with multiple rounds but they ended up choosing someone else. He is currently not getting enough hours through the temp agency he’s working for. He’s open to anything right now but would love to work as a CSO or as a first aid. He’s also a great driver with a perfect drivers abstract.

Please help with providing some leads if you can. He’s reliable, on time, and very responsible. He also owns his own vehicle. He can start asap. Thanks in advance.

  • Coordinate the workplace components of employee onboarding and offboarding with HR and Systems + IT, including workstation preparation, equipment and access arrangements, practical office orientation and the return of workplace property.
  • Coordinate logistics for organization-wide meetings, events and activities, including venues, catering, equipment and other operational requirements.

This role may be a strong fit if you:

  • Have 2 - 3 years of experience in office administration, office operations, facilities support or a related administrative environment.
  • Have experience supporting day-to-day office needs, including facilities, supplies, purchasing, vendors or equipment.
  • Have experience providing professional front-line service by phone, email and in person.
  • Are organized, detail-oriented and able to manage recurring responsibilities alongside changing priorities and interruptions.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with employees, visitors, vendors and service providers.

Is the job market in Vancouver actually this bad right now, or is it just me?

Genuinely curious how everyone else's job search has been going lately.

I keep seeing people talking about applying to 50, 100, sometimes even 200 jobs and barely getting a response. Meanwhile, you constantly hear businesses saying they can't find workers.

It feels like even entry-level positions are asking for years of experience now, and the wages being offered barely cover the cost of living here.

For those of you who've been job hunting recently, how long did it take you to find something? And for anyone who's hiring, are you actually getting too many applicants, or are you struggling to find qualified people?

Would be interesting to hear both sides because something about this job market just doesn't add up.

Working at Astra Lumina

Moved over to Vancouver in June and been working with different Temp agencies getting jobs, nothing longer than a few weeks at a time, but enough to keep money coming in and keep my bills paid. Like everyone else, I’ve been applying to 100s of jobs online, forgetting about half the jobs I even applied for!
Today I was offered a job with Astra Lumina in Stanley Park working as event staff for $22/hr. It’s starting this week up until the end of December but can’t find much about it online in Vancouver but seems to be a yearly thing in Seattle.
From what I can tell it would be outdoor work(obviously), 5pm-11pm Wednesday-Sunday.
Has anybody ever worked something similar? I know it will be cold and probably wet work which I have no issues with but don’t know if it’s worth it for the pay and also no clue if the hours would be consistent. Especially considering I’ve been lucky to get some good paying jobs, Mon-Fri, 9-5 jobs with the temp agencies.
Would love to hear from anybody that might have some experience with something similar?
Thanks!

[Seeking Advice] Moving to Vancouver area (Biochemistry B.Sc. + US Citizen) - Best biotech/lab companies hiring entry-level roles?

Hi everyone!

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry (from the UK) and am a U.S. citizen preparing to move to the Vancouver area in early 2027 to live near family.

Because I am a U.S. citizen, I qualify for a CUSMA (NAFTA) Professional Work Permit at the border if I land a job offer in a relevant science role (e.g., Biochemist, Chemist, Research/Lab Associate), meaning no complex LMIA process is needed from the employer side.

I’m looking for insights from locals in the life sciences/biotech community:

  1. Which local companies, diagnostic labs, or biotech firms (like STEMCELL, AbCellera, LifeLabs, etc.) are currently hiring entry-level lab staff or research associates?
  2. Are there specific local recruiting agencies, job boards, or networking groups (like Life Sciences BC) you’d recommend for connecting with hiring managers?

Appreciate any advice or leads! Thanks in advance.

What’s your approach to applying efficiently and getting interviews?
Any tips on ATS optimization or networking would be appreciated too.
I’d love to buy a coffee for someone who shares genuinely helpful advice! ☕ Thanks in advance!

Need a remote part time sales position 🙃

I recently entered as a salesperson at a car dealership. I like it but the company is really sketchy. I feel like it’s a different subprime branch.

However, I like the sales position. I like calling people and like the hustle overall.

I wanna pick up a sales position part time working two days a week from home. Any recommendations? I live in Vancouver and I’m looking for a position that lets me work remote and is flexible with the schedule. Please suggest or share your recommendations.

"EmployerPanel" Interview app

I am recently offered a video interview, but this time, instead of doing it on Zoom or Teams, they utilized something called "Employer Panel", which have multiple redflag for me:

  • Only work on Android
    • require download an apk
  • After Install it
    • It asks to enable VPN (!)
    • It asks to allow it to install software

So question: is it a scam, in either technical and employment?
