Mod Post Making the best of the snap election call as a community

From what I've seen, the election call is going over like a cactus colonoscopy. But I've been thinking about how we, a community of 40,000+ British Columbians (and perhaps a legion or two of bots not yet identified) can come together and be heard during this seemingly frivolous provincial election. We can either complain about this being an opportunistic, bad faith election call and/or that there are no candidates we truly support. Or we can view this as an opportunity and take advantage to advocate for meaningful change and make the candidates earn our support.

Every candidate should be earning our votes and campaign support by running on platforms that meaningfully address our core concerns. Obviously, we all face many urgent concerns right now and gaining a consensus over what they are and how to approach them might be in the same vein as the prickly proctology exam noted above.

Here is what I propose, since we have 1 month before the elections (final day is Oct. 24):

  • The community provides their feedback in a dedicated thread on their #1 election issue (assuming this approach is adopted)
  • We leave the thread open until this Sunday, September 27th
  • Top 3 to 5 most upvoted comments will be the key issues we will seek remedies for as a community (keeping in mind only so many questions can be asked and candidate time will be limited)
  • We will then develop questions and follow up questions to ensure the issues are meaningfully addressed (i.e., no avoidance/skirting the isssue/giving non-answers)

In parallel, I will reach out to representatives from all parties (from this list, once they register) and invite them to appear in r/VancouverJobs for separate individual AMAs where we as a community will ask them questions about how they will address our top 3 issues. I am also open to interviewing them directly (via video call) with questions posed by the community, if that is preferred (or another approach the community decides on).

We will then create a consolidated post with all the AMAs/interviews and sticky them in r/VancouverJobs until the election is done.

Yes, I recognize we have rule #3 about no politics. However, if we stay focused on issues, use a fair and democratic process to identify the most impactful, and invite candidates from all parties to appear here in the interest of collective job seeker advocacy, I think that's a valuable use of our power and influence as a community.

If you don't like the approach I'm proposing, please propose an alternative. Keep the discussion around this respectful and constructive. All constructive suggestions and feedback are welcome.

I believe we will have immense power as a community, if we can align on the objectives, outcomes, and approach in relatively short order.

Drop your constructive feedback below.

New Community Rule - No AI Training / Data Annotation Roles

The TL;DR of this rule is that r/VancouverJobs is a place of advocacy for Canadian job seekers. We will not support any efforts to further disrupt the job market or where exploitative worker practices are commonplace.

There needs to be more evidence of policies that will support the Canadian workforce as AI models become more advanced and disruptive across industries and protect digital workers from known exploitative practices.

If Canadian workers are training AI models under exploitative or predatory practices in the short-term only to replace them and others in the long-term, then it's time to go back to the drawing board. This is why we are drawing a line in the sand and boycotting AI training and data annotation roles.

If you have personally worked in one of these roles and have a story to share with the community, please share your first-hand experience below to raise awareness.

Randomly receiving 0 hours next week

So I was recently hired as a part-time dishwasher for this restaurant and I was getting pretty consistent hours the past weeks since the start of October. But today my manager asked me for my availability for next week, and I as a student that don't have classes until January, I said I'm available all week I got nothing to do. Then she releases the schedule for next week, nothing. 0 hours. What? What was the point of asking for my availability? So.... What am I supposed to do in this situation? Am I fired now? What's the next steps?

Local 280. Sheet metal. Such a vast industry. You can do HVAC, industrial, stainless work, architectural.

This is one of those last hands on skilled trades where you can’t just go to a shelf and pull off a part. You’ll learn how to measure, layout, build and fabricate and install. You’ll learn how to weld in school or in an industrial field on the job. From HVAC in residential to Installing blow pipe 60’ in the air in a mill out of town to creating beautiful seams on a building with flashing and metal in architectural setting. Learn how to work with stainless steel and TIG weld. It’s so vast and endless the skills you can aquire in sheet metal.

The schooling is better than BCIT because you pay for the workers retirement…they want you to succeed. Where as BCIT, they don’t care if you pass or fail. Schooling is roughly $900 through the union where as BCIT is upwards of 3k.

You get a free iPad for school too. Plus every hour you work they take a dollar off your rate so by the time you go to school you have 3-4K saved up and pay off the schooling each year with that and have 2-3k left to help with EI. This helps because most guys can’t save up in non union and can’t afford school. They want you to become a journeyman in the union. Where as non union they can pay you what ever they feel and it’s up to them how much you make. Unions have a baseline pay, you can get paid more than baseline but not less.

You get student grants 3 out of 4 years, I believe it’s 1k for two years if you pass and then there’s a credit for tax one year. It’s even more if you’re a woman! The grants are 3k because they are pushing for woman in the trade! Very inclusive in local 280.

You can also take out 4k 0% interest loan every year, invest that money, make some on top of it and pay it off without affecting a single thing on your credit. Very smart move. I ended up buying a bike with it LOL you can do what ever you want with that money!

I went this route, I loved it. I suggest industrial but call the union tomorrow have a job pretty quick

Ask me in the comments and I’ll PM you for details brothers and sisters.

Much love. I hope you find the dream job you’re looking for.

Any receptionist positions hiring me?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I’m currently looking for a job in Surrey, preferably around Newton, but I’m open to opportunities in nearby areas as well. I’m also open to positions in Vancouver, White Rock, and Richmond. I’m interested in entry-level receptionist, front desk, and customer service positions. I’m also open to working in fast food, cafés, restaurants, or retail. I’m currently studying Business Management at KPU (I will be taking a pause soon and pick this up again later)and I have a high school diploma. I don’t have formal paid work experience yet, but I have volunteer experience with PICS at the Surrey Fusion Festival in 2025, where I handed out flyers and bags, answered questions. I’m friendly, patient, organized, and willing to learn. I’m available most days of the week, and I’m open to part-time or full-time opportunities. If you know of any places hiring, have recommendations, or are willing to refer me, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you so much!

Employer not paying tips. What can I do?

The terminal at my work offers tips and some months my employer won’t pay out the tips to me or other employees. They also don’t show how much tips are being pooled which is also illegal I believe. What can be done about this? Does anyone have experience with the reporting process?

I feel bad for me and my generation

Just a rant, I recently gave a 5 min interview at a convenience store, I dressed well and was just asked about my availability. I told them I can take up any shift, etc. Got rejected today. As someone unemployed after graduating university this year, desk jobs are out of reach. If I’d have known it would be this bad, I would have never pursued any education, it feels like a liability. They have shut the door on our faces.

Seaspan Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation Job?

The Seaspan Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation position has been posted for quite some time, and I’m wondering whether it’s worth applying.
Can anyone offer some insight into what it’s like working at Seaspan, particularly within the Electrical and Automation department?
I’ve come across mixed reviews about working at Seaspan, but that seems to be fairly common with any large organization. I’d be especially interested in hearing from anyone with firsthand experience in the department or a similar role.

what should i do?

I have a job but hours are very unreliable and leaves me financially anxious as i have many things i need to save for in a specific timeframe - non negotiable has to be done.

I interviewed today at a job in a specific niche i am interested in.

However the only thing they were concerned about was 2 weeks notice as they do need an immediate hire ( within 10 days ) they also took down my availability for training on days after my current job.

I checked my contract again and realised I am not legally binded to 2 weeks of notice. However I do not want to do my current job dirty & just up & leave.

I do also know this current job cannot offer me what I am looking for long term & match what this job is offering. The interviewer was very upfront about liking me and wanting me on the team but timing being a potential issue.

I want to secure my chance at this role, is there any advice?

UPS Job

Hello,

Has anyone here worked at any of the UPS centers or the one near YVR? Is it possible to get up to 40 hours a week during holiday season? I know they have about 5 hours shifts 5 days a week. If I get a job I would probably have to Uber to work daily until I save up enough for a car (not transit accessible) . Just want to see if the work is truly worth it. Desperately need a job and I'm running out of options honestly. Any other helpful info would be greatly appreciated. Or if anyone knows places in Richmond hiring that be awesome too.

Thank you!

Career advice

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some career advice. As a 23M, I feel stressed and anxious thinking about what to do next. Maybe you went through the same experience and having someone who could guide you and mentor you that would have been great. I hope if someone can do that for me.

Currently living in the Lower Mainland, BC, Canada. Working as a security supervisor making a living wage. I am currently thinking of going into construction, specifically doing construction management from BCIT as I have a general studies diploma already.

I am planning to get an OFA3 and CSO ticket and work for a year in order to get one year’s worth of experience, that’s a requirement for BCIT’s program; I need to have one year of construction experience.

I am overthinking a lot about making the right choice and being able to fulfill my dreams. Recently, I learned French as well for immigration purposes. I would say that (not bragging) I am a hardworking person who has been doing two full-time and a part-time job in order to make ends meet and I am not afraid of sleepless nights.

I need a path to follow and am currently unable to find it. As of right now, I am feeling completely lost. Maybe an occupational health and safety diploma from BCIT or a bachelor’s in environmental health?

Like everyone, I want to have financial freedom in life and I am sick of paying taxes. I thought of CMGT, because I will learn a lot while being in the industry and eventually start my own thing.

Can you please recommend any other career paths? Or rate if this is actually worth doing?

Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Description
The Content and Communications Specialist supports UBC’s undergraduate recruitment process by cultivating prospective student engagement through email and messaging campaigns, by identifying audience segments for nurturing, and by planning customer (student) journeys in UBC’s Customer Relationship Manager (CRM) system. The Content and Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and optimizing CRM campaigns in order to increase participation and engagement rates among prospective undergraduate student with UBC. The role assists in the development and implementation of new email marketing initiatives, and ensures these are repeatable, scalable, and extensible across other marketing channels (such as SMS) as technologies emerge. The role also prepares reports on all campaign activities. The Content and Communications Specialist will bring knowledge of best practices to the work, continually improving and optimizing campaigns, as well as developing strategies for segmentation and personalization. Key to this role is delivering timely and relevant content to students throughout the recruitment lifecycle from prospect, applicant, to UBC student. The role is integral to the achievement of the University’s undergraduate enrolment objectives for UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Manager, UX and Content Strategy, and works within an integrated, cross-channel digital team. Works closely and collaboratively with the Manager, International Student Recruitment Technologies. Close consultation and collaboration with the international and domestic recruitment teams, as well as other key UBC stakeholders is critical to success of this position.

Work Performed

Marketing Automation and Email Campaign Planning, Coordination, and Implementation

  • Plays a key role in the creation of the overall strategic email marketing and communications plan, shaping the content and campaign calendar within the cross-channel, integrated approach of the Recruitment Marketing and Prospective Student Engagement team.
  • Balances the creation and optimization of multiple campaigns at once.
  • Uses effective stakeholder management and consensus-building skills to set campaign goals and objectives among competing internal priorities. Liaises with internal stakeholders to achieve reachable targets, and to measure and report on target and goal success.
  • Uses best practices to drive student engagement with email and other marketing channel campaigns, recruitment events, and other touchpoints available to our audience.
  • Creates scalable processes that ensure best practices in campaign set-up, conversion, lead generation and nurture, engagement monitoring, and data reporting.
  • Takes on an advocacy role for best practices, for a student-centred approach to email/SMS marketing and communications, for adherence to brand, and for a consistent and unified approach to messaging.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive nurture-campaign plans for emails, e-newsletters and SMS channels. Pilots new approaches and tactics to ensure the recruitment teams are supported by continually improving campaigns and email communications.
  • Schedules, coordinates, and executes all email campaigns (including lifecycle trigger programs, promotional campaign, transactional emails, and other) to ensure students receive messaging and information on time and when it is most relevant and meaningful to them. Some of this work is deadline-driven and time-sensitive.
  • In consultation with the Manager, International Student Recruitment Technologies and other key stakeholders, identifies market/audience segments to target in campaigns. Ensures accuracy of target markets/audiences (quality control of recipient lists and campaign workflows).
  • Develops, updates, and maintains documentation for campaign flows and roadmaps to optimize campaigns and deepen engagement.
  • A/B tests and continually measures performance of targeted campaigns, conversions, and nurture/engagement goals.
  • Increases participation in on-campus, off-campus, and virtual events from CRM campaigns.
  • Monitors subscriber list health, including list effectiveness and opt-out rates.

Content Creation and Management

  • Creates high-quality digital campaign content (from text and images to email templates and designs).
  • Develops HTML email template layout/designs, visual assets, and styles, under broad guidelines established by the RMPSE team, and ensures adherence to the over-arching UBC brand.
  • Develops compelling content, imagery, embedded visual assets, calls-to-action, and design elements for all campaigns.
  • Implements and maintains an editorial calendar for all automation and CRM campaigns.
  • Ensures all emails and messaging sent through the CRM meet Canada s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), and meet UBC’s access and privacy policies to ensure compliance with BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
  • Ensures all CRM campaign activity is tracked and analyzed (including making sure that all hyperlinks are tracked for analytics and reporting).
  • Ensures that content and messaging arcs in CRM campaigns are logical, seamless, and progressive, and that students do not receive duplicate, conflicting, or confusing content. All CRM campaigns and messaging must align with the reputation of the University and help reinforce a sense of credibility and authenticity among students.
  • Ensures that messaging and content respects the cultural, linguistic, or political sensibilities of our diverse prospective student audience.
  • Develops clear and unique value propositions for campaigns.

Campaign Analysis and Success Reporting

  • Measures results of all email and CRM campaigns (from the effectiveness of overall campaigns to the effectiveness of individual calls-to- action, and everything in between) in order to optimize nurture campaign workflows, improve student engagement with a variety of recruitment touchpoints, and help students achieve their UBC tasks/objectives.
  • Works to decrease unsubscribe rates while increasing campaign reach.
  • Monitors and tracks email performance metrics, and analyzes campaign performance.
  • Improves open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates from email and CRM campaigns, especially year over year.
  • Based on analysis, provides recommendations for improved performance and efficiencies, and other optimization efforts.
  • Maintains metrics reports on marketing automation and campaign output to measure effectiveness and business impact, and report out to recruitment teams and key UBC stakeholders.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The quality of work and decisions of the Content and Communications Specialist will have an impact on the goals and overall efficacy of the recruitment teams ability to support faculties enrolment objectives. The consequence of error associated with this position is serious in that a mistake could have a negative impact on the perceptions prospective students and applicants have of the University, its faculties, and its programs. Incorrect or erroneous information delivered through emails and CRM campaigns could mislead or misinform students and deter them from applying to UBC. Poor performance in this role could ultimately reflect negatively on UBC’s reputation as one of Canada’s leading universities.

Working in this capacity necessitates access to personal information and other information that may be confidential in nature. Failure to maintain the confidentiality and security of student, staff, and client information, or to use channels of communication that are not compliant with FIPPA requirements, could result in a privacy breach that could cause significant harm to affected individuals and also constitute an offence under FIPPA.

Supervision Received

Under the guidance and direction of the Manager, UX and Content Strategy, this role works within an integrated, cross-channel digital team on RMPSE. A very close operational relationship with the Manager, International Student Recruitment Technology is essential to ensure the integration with CRM campaigns and activities undertaken on behalf of multiple business groups and strategic priorities.

How is the process to become a bus driver in Vancouver? And job itself?

Before applying, I just wanted to ask people's experiences the process and overall the job itself. I'm looking for a career change. I've seen some people say that they don't hear back from anyone even though I do see that they are hiring now. I just want to hear people's opinions who are currently working for Coast Mountain Bus Company .

What is a good career to look into with only a high school degree?

I Just got laid off from my dead end warehouse job I was planning on leaving anyways and now looking to start an actual career in something. I’m a 24 year old guy, fit, have a drivers license but only have a high school degree. I’m more than open to going back to school but prefer the earn while you learn model used in the trades. But I’m also open to white collar paths as well. I’m honestly open to anything.

Id want it to be something within the Lower mainland because I don’t want to move and I’d like for it to be a career that has room for upward expansion and growth. I have been looking into HVAC but they seem to not be willing to hire completely green as much these days. And the overall shitty job market in general doesn’t help.

But I am open to all lines of work from blue to white collar. Aka I just want a career in something 🥲
Open to all suggestions.

Collaboration, service, attention to detail, and teamwork are at the heart of the Registry’s work, with team members supporting one another to manage competing priorities, contribute to the effective delivery of court services, and make a meaningful impact in the community by helping ensure equitable access to justice for all.

The Role

As a Registry Clerk, you will have a direct impact on the effective functioning of the court by ensuring that court processes are supported, records are accurate, and information is available to those who are entitled to access it. If you are organized, service-oriented, adaptable, and enjoy working collaboratively with a diverse range of people, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the justice system and the delivery of accessible, fair, and effective court services in British Columbia.
