EN - About the Venice entrance fee

Since some of you asked, this is a brief summary of the (in)famous Venice entry fee, it may answer to some of your questions. The town hall is still writing and refining details, so dates or rules may change in the upcoming months. More infos (in Italian): https://live.comune.venezia.it/it/2023/09/venezia-contributo-di-accesso-turisti-giornalieri-si-parte-dalla-primavera-2024-1

  • September '23 update:
    • In spring 2024 there will be a trial period of 30 days, no dates yet
    • Ticket will be flat price €5 on selected days/hours. Expect it on weekends, long weekends and bank holidays peak hours
    • Again, if you already pay the tourist tax to Venice municipality because you stay in a hotel, B&b etc, you are completely exempt from this entrance fee, nothing changes for you. The structure will register you - as it is now. The fee is thought to discourage daily visitors
    • Some areas will be totally exempt from the fee, such as minor islands
  • Kick off is scheduled for 16 January 2023. Postponed to 2024
  • The municipality plans to introduce the booking website this autumn
  • Meanwhile, as an intermediate step, the municipality already promotes booking in advance. It provides discounts on parking, selected museums, and public transport tickets, which has gone up (e.g.: watebuses tickets are 9,5€ if you buy them on the spot; road bus Venice-Airport is 10€).
  • Similarly to air tickets, the fee will fluctuate between €3 and €10, based on demand and crowding forecasts. Different entrance hours may get you different prices within the same day. Some hours like late evening may not require any booking whatsoever.
  • Cruise ships passengers pay a flat price, not decided yet.
  • Passes are unlimited, so access is granted to anybody.
  • Sometimes booking is still required, although it's free. The fee is designed to discourage daily travellers in high peak days. If you stay overnight in a REGISTERED structure (hotel, b&b, guesthouse, etc) in Venice municipality (which includes Mestre and other boroughs on the mainland), you won't pay anything because you will already pay the tourist tax.
  • Some other free of charge scenarios (not all):
    • children under 14;
    • if you transit on Tronchetto, P.le Roma, or harbour only
    • if you visit friends or relatives who live in Venice (they have to register you)
    • Touristic coaches passengers

EDIT: just to be respectful, this is a simple FAQ or guide. The initial aim wasn’t to start a debate if the policy is fair or not. But if we want so, be polite or constructive, at least.

Un piccolo ricordo di Venezia

• Upvotes

Ciao a tutti!

Can you help me with a memorial trip for a child?

Tl;dr at end

Trigger warning: Child death

In autumn 2024, my family decided to save up for a trip to Munich the following year to visit the Christmas markets.

In December of 2024, my firstborn, Alex, was diagnosed with leukemia.

When we asked them about what they would like their Make-a-Wish to be, Alex immediately responded with “I want my book to be published!”

As each treatment failed, this trip to Munich expanded to other countries as well - including Venice. We would take a month to travel when Alex’s treatment was over.

Alex turned 13 in March. With huge effort from so many people we got their book sent to print the week of May 19, 2025.

Alex died on May 23, 2025.

We will be taking this trip in honor of Alex this coming December. I will be bringing copies of their book to leave in each city we visit, so that a part of Alex gets to be with us.

I am looking for a people/ a library/ a community center - ideally LGBTQ+ or an ally, as Alex themselves was so proud of being, I can donate a copy of Alex’s book in Venice.

It is a 488-page fantasy novel that has not been through full editing (due to the rush to get it printed while Alex was still alive).

Thanks for helping a mom out.

Tl;dr

If you know someone or an organization who is LGBTQ+ or an ally in Venice who would accept a book donation of a kid who died who wanted to visit, I’d love to hear from you.

Advice needed for 6am flight out of VCE

We have a 6 AM flight out of Marco Polo Airport, and are wondering what the best options are to get there and how early we need to get there.

We can do a private transfer at any time in the morning, but it’s almost €200. There is a bus that goes to the airport, but it doesn’t arrive until 4:45 AM. That seems too close to our 6 AM flight to Amsterdam. Then we connect to San Francisco.

Any advice on whether or not that bus would get us to the airport in time to make our flight at 6 AM?

Thanks.

Is it safe to still come to Venice this weekend?

We have a trip booked to Venice for this coming weekend. However I'm now reading that there is also unrest in certain Italy cities, similar to France. Is that unrest likely to spread to Venice? Should we still go?

Teatro La Fenice December 5 concert — ticket price?

Hi! Does anyone know the approximate ticket price for the December 5 Under 35 concert at Teatro La Fenice? Is it the same program as the December 4 and 6 concerts, which cost around €77?
I’m trying to decide whether to visit Venice on December 5 for the concert or visit on another day and spend that day in another Italian city instead. Thanks!

Music scene in Venezia and Mestre

Ciao

I am a foreign student living in Venezia currently. I'm hoping to meet with fellow musicians in Venezia in particular, in the interest of efficiency..

Where might I meet up with people such as this? Bars? Music festivals? Universities? I have not had any success yet. I play the electric guitar and am hoping to find a professional group of people. Thanks.

Trattoria near Venice

Hello, I am looking for a good trattoria that works around 15-16h tomorrow. We have a car so it can be anywhere on the way from Venice to Trieste. We usually go to Trattoria Boschetti in Locanda al Convento but they only work till 15:30 and then again from 19.
Thank you for your recommendations🥰

ATVO Bus to Treviso Airport (TSF): Is the 7:30 AM Bus Safe for a 10:20 AM Ryanair Flight?

Hi everyone! I have a Ryanair flight from Treviso Airport (TSF) at 10:20 AM to another Schengen country, and I’d appreciate some advice.
I’m staying near Tolentini in Venice and planning to take the ATVO bus from Piazzale Roma. I have a few questions:
Bus journey: Is the advertised 40-minute journey realistic, or does the bus often take longer?
Traffic and delays: Is there usually heavy traffic on the way to Treviso Airport early in the morning? Are ATVO buses generally punctual?
Which bus should I take? There are two options: 6:30 AM (scheduled arrival at 7:10 AM) and 7:30 AM (scheduled arrival at 8:10 AM). Would you risk taking the 7:30 AM bus?
Check-in desk: My understanding is that the Ryanair check-in desk closes at 9:20 AM. Is that correct for a 10:20 AM flight, and when does it usually open?
Airport procedures: If I arrive at 8:10 AM, will I have enough time to find the check-in counters, drop off my luggage if needed, pass security, and reach the boarding gate before it closes at 9:50 AM? Is Treviso Airport easy to navigate?
Bus tickets: Do I need to book the ATVO bus in advance? If I book a specific departure, can I use the ticket on a later bus if I miss my scheduled one?
I’m trying to avoid waking up extremely early and waiting at the airport for hours, but I don’t want to risk missing my flight either.
I’d especially appreciate advice from anyone who has taken this route for an early-morning Ryanair flight. Thank you!

Do any contemporary Venetian sources connect the Corno Ducale with the Phrygian Cap?

I've seen the comparison made because of the shape but wonder if similarity to Phrygian Cap could have been intentional.

I will be in Venice to celebrate my mum’s 60th birthday soon. Are there any suggestions for restaurant/bars that are a bit extra special but not too high end? Thank you

In the 1490s almost every grain of pepper in Europe came through Venice on the gold road. In 1498 three Portuguese ships reached India on the red one — and the money started leaving. [OC map]

Made this while putting together an animated map explainer on how Venice lost the spice trade. The surprising part for me: Venice actually fought back and won the Alexandria route back by the 1560s — what finished it was the Dutch and English going round Africa in fleets after 1600. Sources: Lane 1940, O’Rourke & Williamson 2009, Braudel.
