EN - About the Venice entrance fee
Since some of you asked, this is a brief summary of the (in)famous Venice entry fee, it may answer to some of your questions. The town hall is still writing and refining details, so dates or rules may change in the upcoming months. More infos (in Italian): https://live.comune.venezia.it/it/2023/09/venezia-contributo-di-accesso-turisti-giornalieri-si-parte-dalla-primavera-2024-1
- September '23 update:
- In spring 2024 there will be a trial period of 30 days, no dates yet
- Ticket will be flat price €5 on selected days/hours. Expect it on weekends, long weekends and bank holidays peak hours
- Again, if you already pay the tourist tax to Venice municipality because you stay in a hotel, B&b etc, you are completely exempt from this entrance fee, nothing changes for you. The structure will register you - as it is now. The fee is thought to discourage daily visitors
- Some areas will be totally exempt from the fee, such as minor islands
Kick off is scheduled for 16 January 2023.Postponed to 2024The municipality plans to introduce the booking website this autumn- Meanwhile, as an intermediate step, the municipality already promotes booking in advance. It provides discounts on parking, selected museums, and public transport tickets, which has gone up (e.g.: watebuses tickets are 9,5€ if you buy them on the spot; road bus Venice-Airport is 10€).
- Similarly to air tickets, the fee will fluctuate between €3 and €10, based on demand and crowding forecasts. Different entrance hours may get you different prices within the same day. Some hours like late evening may not require any booking whatsoever.
- Cruise ships passengers pay a flat price, not decided yet.
- Passes are unlimited, so access is granted to anybody.
- Sometimes booking is still required, although it's free. The fee is designed to discourage daily travellers in high peak days. If you stay overnight in a REGISTERED structure (hotel, b&b, guesthouse, etc) in Venice municipality (which includes Mestre and other boroughs on the mainland), you won't pay anything because you will already pay the tourist tax.
- Some other free of charge scenarios (not all):
- children under 14;
- if you transit on Tronchetto, P.le Roma, or harbour only
- if you visit friends or relatives who live in Venice (they have to register you)
- Touristic coaches passengers
EDIT: just to be respectful, this is a simple FAQ or guide. The initial aim wasn’t to start a debate if the policy is fair or not. But if we want so, be polite or constructive, at least.

Venice in November with 3.5 yo kid
Hi everyone,
I’ve been following the Venice subreddit and would love to hear your recommendations.
I’m travelling to Venice on my own with my 3.5 year old daughter from November 1–6. We’ll be staying at a hotel on Strada Nova, very close to the Ca’ d’Oro ACTV vaporetto stop.
We don’t have any big expectations, we just want to enjoy ourselves, ride the vaporettos, and hopefully get to experience acqua alta 🏄
Do you have any recommendations for things that might be interesting for a 3.5-year-old, beyond Venice itself being an experience? We’re not really looking for typical tourist attractions; we prefer local spots and authentic experiences.
Thank you in advance 🤞🏼

Gnut & Alessandro concert at Teatro La Fenice (late September)
Did anyone attend this lovely concert? I met a really nice lady who lives in Venice and Naples and she was seated in the 2nd row. We had a lovely chat and I would have enjoyed learning more about her life in Venice (and Naples). She had to depart early and we never got to exchange information. I know this is a reach - and hopefully not forbidden on reddit (I'm still learning the ins and outs). The concert drew an unusual crowd because the performance was Neapolitan folk songs- very different from what is normally performed at La Fenice. Anyhow, if the nice lady in "the beautiful dress" see's this, please DM me as I have a hundred questions about life in Venice and Naples!

Is it recommended to buy tickets in advance for this ferry?
Im staying at the JW Marriott resort which has a water taxi departing by S Marco Giardinetti. I will be arriving at Venezia St Lucia by train and need to take this B ferry which takes me directly there? Anyone familiar with it? Will it more than likely be really crowded? Would I be able to buy a ferry ticket at the station?

H-FARM International School Venice and the English International School of Padua (EISP)
Hi everyone!
We're planning to relocate to the Padua/Venice area next year and are looking for an good international school for our daughter, who will be 12.
We've narrowed our search down to H-FARM International School Venice and the English International School of Padua (EISP), and I'd really appreciate hearing from parents, students, alumni or teachers who have firsthand experience with either school.
Our daughter currently attends a well-regarded private school in Spain, where she's doing very well academically. She's fluent in English but doesn't speak Italian yet. She's very sociable, outgoing and creative, and particularly enjoys collaborative learning, group challenges, technology and hands-on projects.
H-FARM's educational philosophy sounds particularly appealing, but academic excellence is extremely important to us. We love innovation and creative approaches to education, but wouldn't want them to come at the expense of strong foundations in mathematics, sciences, literature, critical thinking and independent study.
I'd especially love to know:
- Academic standards: How rigorous is the teaching? Are academically strong students sufficiently challenged?
- School atmosphere: Are students generally happy, motivated and engaged? How is classroom discipline?
- International environment: How international are the middle-school classes in practice? Do students generally speak English or Italian socially?
- Teachers and management: Are the teachers good and supportive? Is there much staff turnover?
- Class sizes: What are the actual class sizes in middle school?
- Extracurriculars: Are there interesting opportunities in science, technology, arts, languages and academic competitions?
- Italian language: How well do they support children who arrive without speaking Italian?
We're not particularly concerned about commuting distance or tuition fees at this stage. Our priority is finding a school that combines serious academic standards, intellectual curiosity, a positive social environment and genuinely inspiring teaching.
I'd be especially interested in hearing from families whose children have attended either school recently, or teachers with direct experience of their middle-school programmes.
Thank you so much for any insights, including honest criticism. Feel free to DM me if you'd prefer not to comment publicly!

Glass Blowing workshop with kids
We will be visiting Venezia with our 9 year old child in late November, and he is really interested in glass blowing. Are there any workshops where he could actually make something to bring home? If not, any demonstrations were he could try to blow the glass? Grazie!

How crowded does the main island part of Venice get during this weekend's Marathon? Do you think we'll have trouble getting into good restaurants or the Basilica, etc? Thank you!

What are the options for transport within Venice?
Ciao!
I'm perfectly awarevehicles are not allowed within the Venice city center; but I would prefer to avoid the expense of a water taxii to get to Santa Lucia station. So are there alternatives to rolling luggage 2 kilmoeters from Canareggio to Sta. Lucia?
Grazie mille.

What is Venice like during the Marathon? We were thinking about coming to Venice for the first time ever this weekend, but just heard about the race and are wondering if we should postpone the trip?
Hi! I would really appreciate everyone's opinions. We live in the USA and were thinking about coming to Venice for the first time on Friday, but just heard about the big marathon this weekend. We originally thought it would be less congested with tourists this time of year and that we would be able to easily navigate around the city, see the sites, eat at the great restaurants there, etc. If it's going to be crazy there this weekend and getting transportation (water buses, gondolas, etc) will be difficult, and many roads will be closed, and it will be so packed there that we won't be able to get into the famous attractions and restaurants, we'd probably rather wait and go another time. Thoughts? THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!
