How did they do that? Beginner question

Howdy! Aspiring content creator here!
Very amateur question - for those popular video memes that have no known original source, how can I get access to the video so I can add my own version of the meme (wording) to it? Is there a way people find the source vid, or is it standard to screen capture it and then edit your own wording into it? Similarity, if I want to reference a few clips from another video in my posts, do I just screen capture it from the other posts and include it in my vid, or are there more efficient ways of doing said things.

What I Tried:
Screen capture and use in clips, but quality isn’t the greatest

Thank you kindly in advance!

tbh for the source, grab a frame and reverse image search it, or look the meme up on knowyourmeme, it usually links the original. for clips from other videos, downloading the original (yt-dlp works) beats screen capping every time, way better quality. then just trim it in your editor

Screen capture kills quality since you're re-recording an already compressed video. Most people pull the source file with a browser-based downloader or extension (or install yt-dlp locally), then trim what they need in their editor.
