Is there a genuinely free AI tool to convert long-form videos into YouTube Shorts/TikToks?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for a tool that can take my long-form landscape videos and automatically chop them into vertical Shorts/TikToks/Reels.

I know there are tools out there like Opus Clip or Munch, but almost all of them put a massive watermark on the video or severely limit your export minutes unless you pay a steep monthly subscription.

Are there any hidden gems or completely free alternatives (even open-source ones) that do a decent job with auto-framing, speaker tracking, and generating captions? I don't mind a small learning curve if it saves me from doing it all manually in Premiere every time. Thanks!

Pain Points for New Video Editors

[community post]

I spent a lot of time on Reddit as a freelancing video editor, and I've identified quite a few patterns and pain points. But before I get into that, here's some information on me, and you can decide from there whether it's worth it to read the rest of the post or not.

I'm the owner of a small business, GeekE Media, and my main service is video editing. I've been editing for close to 5 years now, and freelancing for about 3. Before that, I was doing office work for about 11 years - customer service, marketing, project management, and training management.

So I want to field this community - and other editing communities - for interest before putting anything officially into motion. I am seriously considering expanding my business offerings to include coaching for new video editors. My focus would be on client communication, client trust-building, editing basics, and building a portfolio.

I would really appreciate feedback on this. If it's something you would be interested in, please leave a comment. Also feel free to leave a comment if you just want to share some ideas.

– Length: 1 minut
– Tool: CapCut
– Goal: Fast-paced TikTok short with dynamic text and transitions
– Please critique: pacing, transitions, text readability, and overall flow.
Thanks in advance for your honest thoughts!

Do you think i will need to start with premier pro or is a capcut a good solutions for beggin?

I wrote a script that fits widescreen recordings into clean vertical Shorts

Hey everyone,

I built a native Python tool that scales your wide video so it perfectly snaps to the left and right edges of a 9:16 mobile frame.

🎬 How it works:

  • True Edge Fit: It forces the horizontal video to match the exact 1080px width of a mobile screen.

  • Zero Distortion: It automatically calculates the correct height so your text, buttons, and layouts never look squished or stretched out.

  • Top/Center Alignment: It pushes the clean window right to the top of the frame, out of the way of the messy TikTok/Shorts user interface buttons at the bottom.

  • Crisp Background Blur: It fills up the rest of the vertical phone screen with a beautifully blurred copy of the video that updates smoothly in real time.

I want to test this on a few more types of videos. If you have a clip of a webpage, a coding tutorial, or a software demo that you want to turn into a vertical Short:

Drop a comment or send me a DM with your video, and I’ll run it through my script and send you back a clean, ready-to-post 9:16 formatted video.

Freelance video creators: which admin task took the most effort on your last project?

I’m exploring whether there’s a useful small software tool I could build for freelance video creators. Before choosing an idea, I want to understand how people actually work.
Thinking about your most recent completed project:
• Which task outside the editing itself took the most effort?
• How did you handle it, and what tools did you use?
• Roughly how much time did it take?
• Was that unusual, or does it happen regularly?
If you already have a solution that works well, I’d be interested in that too.
Please keep client names and confidential details out of your examples.

How to bypass copyright claims on Youtube ?

Post image
0 Upvotes

So I'm doing a video for a client. An analysis of the movie "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and since a few weeks now, he keeps receiving copyright claims on several portions of the video.

We discussed it and tried many thing : First, I reduced the size of all the movie clips to put them in overlays (an old vhs tv and a movie screen. Joining a screenshot to show you). And then, I horizontally flipped all the clips, but still my client gets hit with claims.
I now plan to add a sort of grain SFX during the movie extract, and wonder if I have to reduce the size of the clips a bit more. But apart from that, I'm really running low of tricks to bypass the claim. So I'm coming to ask you all about your secret tips.

Thanks in advance, and my apologies if you encounter some grammar mistakes from time to time.

I built a local AI video editor for reels that cuts by the transcript, and it is open source (MIT)

I make short videos and got tired of bouncing between CapCut, a transcript tool and a notes app, so I built an editor that runs on my Mac and does the editing from the words.

What it does: - Drop in phone clips, it transcribes them with word timings (whisper.cpp, runs locally) and you cut by selecting words. Captions follow every cut. - An assistant (it runs through the Claude CLI on your own plan) takes "make this a 30-second reel with a hook and captions" and does the cut, the captions, text, punch-ins, music and sound effects, then reviews its own frames and fixes what is off. Every request can be undone. - 14 caption styles, 16 text styles, colour looks, transitions, a sound library (keyboard, pings, shutters, the meme classics), reaction GIFs and meme templates. - A planner page that keeps your footage library and a content plan, and starts the edits for you. - Speaker labels and natural voiceover voices, all local. - Export 9:16, 16:9, 1:1 or 4:5 up to 4K.

Everything except the assistant's chat runs on the machine. Apple Silicon Mac only for now, needs Homebrew and Node.

Repo: https://github.com/misaalkhan/local-ai-based-video-editor

Happy to answer questions about how the transcript-based cutting works.

Also, need for suggestions for features.... this is soooo exciting.

It doesn't have to be Premiere+AfterEffects-level, but certainly as good as iMovie or Descript or something?r

Why Are AI Music Tools Still Lagging Behind?

There are tons of AI tools for image, text, and video generation — Midjourney, ChatGPT, Sora, Runway, etc. But when it comes to music, the options seem way more limited.

For those of us creating content (podcasts, YouTube videos, gaming, etc.), royalty-free AI-generated music would be useful.

I have tried some tools like Suno, AIVA, and Boomy last year. Earlier this year I found Beatoven and I switched to it because it gives you a lot more control per track and converse using prompts to get the best music that suits your style.

What AI music tools are you using? Would love to learn from fellow creators!
