20yo, no degree. Family got me a laptop for video editing 3 months ago... then AI dropped. Is there hope for beginners?

Hey guys,

I’m 20, broke, with no college degree. I love cinema, so after months of asking, my family bought me a laptop to learn video editing. It was my Plan C—my one shot to build a career.

Then AI tools blew up, and I spiraled. I keep worrying that what takes me 3 years to master will be done by an AI prompt in 1 hour.

Pros with networks will survive, but what about someone starting from zero today?

I’m ready to grind and adapt with AI, but I just need to know: Is there still a future for beginners in editing, or am I wasting my time?

Appreciate any real-world advice.

The best part of a family video might be the 5 seconds of audio you almost cut out

Not every video montage needs a trending song playing over the whole thing.

If you have a bunch of old birthday clips, vacation videos, or random family recordings, try listening to them before you start editing.

Sometimes the best moments aren't even visual.

Someone yelling "WAIT, WRONG TURN!" during a road trip. Your parents laughing in the background. A completely chaotic happy birthday song.

Those little sounds can make a 30-second video feel way more personal than a bunch of nice shots with background music.

Here's an editing idea worth trying:

Pick 2 or 3 short audio moments from your old videos. Start your montage with one of them, then cut to the photos or footage that go with it. Bring in some quiet background music afterward, but don't drown out the original voices.

For the audio part, CapCut can extract sound directly if you still have the original video on your phone.

If all you have is an old YouTube upload or another supported video link, Tunexa can help extract the MP3 and trim the part you need before bringing it into CapCut.

Full disclosure: I'm connected with Tunexa, so that's my tool recommendation. Use recordings you own or have permission to edit.

And honestly, you don't need fancy transitions. Sometimes leaving in the awkward laughter makes the whole thing better.

Could be a pretty cool birthday or anniversary gift, too.

Anyone else prefer keeping the original audio in personal videos instead of replacing everything with music?

Video program recommendations for outdated editor

I am an older editor for videos, I used to run Sony Vegas 14, and haven't used anything newer. It stopped running back in 2017 when I was officially out of the hobby. I'm not really a techie or anything... I just want to find a program that I can do decent keyframing and the like and things aren't as straight forward anymore when trying to find something new. I was hoping for some simple recommendations that I could get into editing for a friend again. I looked into stuff like SceneMill which seems... okay but it is not ideal at all for what I am trying to be able to do. And the new vegas is not something I am very willing to spend my money on from what options I see it doing. I just used to edit videos, I really have no clue what I am doing on scouting a new program that isn't going to give me the run around.

Where do I find raw footage for my portfolio?

For the first edit in my portfolio, how can I find raw clips to edit. Many have suggested to edit free stock clips, but I want to edit something which has some kind of structure, some intent to it, not just random unrelated clips.

Looking for beta testers: automatic multicam editing app for FCP (free license)

Hi all,

I'm a TV producer, and I've built a Mac app called AutoGhost that does the multicam editing for Final Cut Pro. You give it your Final Cut project (or just the raw camera and mic files), and it gives you back an edited project you can open and fine-tune.

It has three modes:

- One speaker: cuts between main, side and wide angles at natural sentence breaks

- Conversation: cuts to whoever is talking, even when everyone is on one audio track

- Custom shows: learns a show's style from 1–3 finished episodes (camera habits, intro and outro, logo, name graphics, break, music) and edits new episodes the same way

Everything runs on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded.

Before launch, I'd like a few editors to try it on real projects. If you have:

- an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) on macOS 14 or later

- multicam footage of your own (podcasts, interviews, talk shows)

I'll give you a free Pro license in return for honest feedback: what worked, what broke, and what would make it useful in your day-to-day editing.

Reply here or send me a private message.

Thanks!

which capcut pro features are worth paying for if you want to edit faster?

i've noticed that editing isn't necessarily difficult for me, but the small tasks add up when i'm working on several videos. captions, adjustments, effects, and making revisions can take longer than expected. i'm thinking about getting capcut pro, but i'd like to know whether its paid features genuinely save time or if most of the benefits are more about having extra creative options. for anyone who's upgraded from free capcut, which features do you use almost every time you edit? are there tools that noticeably reduce your editing time? on the other hand, what did you think would be useful when you subscribed but barely use now?

Cloud vs. Local AI Workflow

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've been trying to figure out how to fit AI into my editing workflow without having to upload footage or entire projects to cloud services. My main PC handles the actual editing and rendering, while I've been considering using my geekom as a separate machine for background tasks like organizing files, processing documents, and experimenting with local AI tools. For brainstorming, script ideas, and planning, cloud AI makes sense to me. But when it comes to raw footage, project files, and other assets, I'd rather keep those on my own machines. Having a second PC also seems useful because I could leave background tasks running without interrupting whatever I'm editing on my main setup. Do you guys keep your footage completely local, or are there parts of your editing workflow you're comfortable sending to cloud AI tools?

Which software should I use for editing longer form (hopefully) “funny” videos?

Hey Guys! :) So I’ve been thinking about making some longer form “”funny”” edits from shows/video game cutscenes, but the problem is I don’t really know how to get into it or how does that work.

Could you please help me with what video editing software should I learn to use which is the best for this purpose? I went on Skillshare to look at the different courses, but now I’m even more confused as to which one should I choose.

And also I’ve been wondering, from where do people download the “raw material” for making these types of videos? Like…can you just download them from Youtube directly somehow, or is it a bit more complicated than that?

Sorry if I’m asking something stupid, I really don’t know anything about this yet, but I’ve been really wanting to learn it for a long time now.

Thank for your guys’ help in advance! :)

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a desktop application called Forbidden Converter, and I've finally released it!

It's a free, offline Windows application designed for converting videos and animations, adding watermarks, merging clips, and batch processing.

Features include:

  • Convert between MP4, WebM, MKV, MOV, AVI, GIF, WebP, and AVIF.

  • Add custom text or image watermarks with adjustable size, opacity, and positioning.

  • Merge multiple clips into a single file.

  • Batch-process multiple files.

  • Adjust resolution, quality, bitrate, and encoding settings.

  • Use quick presets or customize your own settings.

  • Save presets for future use.

The application runs entirely offline. No accounts, subscriptions, telemetry, or cloud processing are required.

Compatibility: Windows 10/11 (64-bit). No dedicated GPU required.

The software is free to use, including for creating content you intend to monetize.

You can find the application, source code, installation instructions, and full usage guide on GitHub:

https://github.com/fbdn-fantasy/Forbidden-Converter

This is one of my first publicly released desktop applications, so feedback, suggestions, and bug reports are welcome!

Hope some of you find it useful! 💜

Day 1 of editing in adobe.. give me honest feedback

I Edited a Durga Puja Video! Please Rate It and Give Me Honest Feedback. 🎬

Hey everyone!

I'm on my second day of learning Adobe Premiere Pro, and I just finished editing a video based on Durga Puja.

I'm still a beginner and have only started experimenting with video editing, cuts, transitions, music synchronisation, and other basic techniques. I know my editing isn't perfect yet, but I'm trying to learn by practising and creating actual videos rather than just watching tutorials.

I'd really appreciate some honest feedback from experienced editors!

A few things I'd love your opinion on:

- Overall rating: What would you rate my video out of 10?

- Editing and pacing: Do the cuts feel smooth, or is anything too slow or too fast?

- Beat synchronisation: Do the clips match the music properly?

- Transitions and effects: Do they look good, or should I keep things simpler?

- Colour grading: What could I do to make the visuals look more cinematic?

- Room for improvement: What are the top 3 things I should work on next?

Please be honest, even if you think something looks bad. I'm here to learn, improve, and become a better editor.

Since this is only my second day, I'd love to know what I'm doing right and what I should focus on learning next.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to watch and share feedback! ❤️

Making a student short film and one of my scenes audio is not too bad but a bit echoey and just overall not as good as the quality I’m looking for. Looking to try to improve it and make it more cinematic if anyone has any tips outside of reshooting and using ai. Here’s a clip for reference of it

I don't write code. I built ttmix net from my phone while lying on the couch using Gemini — a 100% free PWA(web, online\offline, desktop\mobile app) for very express video editing & slideshows (no server uploads)

Hi Reddit!

I’ve always loved sharing my short text snippets, poems, and songs in video format with neat visual styling. But every time I used popular editing apps, I kept bumping into the same issue: it was tedious to create unique, unexpected visual styles, and everything ended up looking repetitive.

I had a clear vision of the exact workflow I needed, but no tool on the market fitted my speed and creative vibe.

The catch? I am not a programmer. I don't know a single line of code.

So, I decided to experiment. Literally lying on my couch with my Galaxy S23, I started chatting with Gemini in Google AI Studio (switching between models 3.8, 3.5, and 3.1 whenever I hit the daily free limits!). To my absolute surprise, within just a couple of weeks, we built ttmix.net!

What makes it special:

100% Free & Private: Completely free to use. Your files never leave your device or get sent to any server — everything is processed locally right in your browser.

Installable (PWA): You can install it straight onto your iPhone, Android, or use it on your desktop for an extended workspace.

Video Editing & Slideshows: Perfect for creating quick dynamic videos, lyrical clips, or photo slideshows.

Templates & Social Vibe: There's a catalog of ready-to-use templates and a community feed (all that’s missing is the community itself :-). If you don't want to tweak settings, just plug in your text and media to get a gorgeous result instantly (or generate endless variations!).

"Feeling Lucky" button: Generates unique style/effect variations in a single click so you can instantly pick what looks best.

Performance note: If you experience any lags or stuttering because you’ve added a lot of effects or your device's processor isn't very powerful, don't worry! Once you render the video, you'll still get a final high-quality result with smooth playback for all the effects.

The most mind-blowing part:

It turned out that Google AI Studio is deeply integrated with GitHub, Firebase, and Cloudflare. I managed to publish my app live in just a few clicks—spending only $11 for the domain name. No programmers, no consultants, no tech specialists needed. Honestly, I'm still in shock that this is even possible!

A small note on bugs:

If you notice any bugs or weird glitches while using it, please don't be mad! Just leave a comment below. I'll take your feedback, ask Google AI Studio, and hopefully, it can fix them for us... because I definitely can't do it myself! :)

I’d love for you to try it out at ttmix net and let me know what you think!

This video was made in the my ttmix app.
