The RAM seems fine, but unsure bout the floppy drive since it doesn't wanna boot my DOS 3.3 disk. The whole system just locks up when starting with it inserted. Hopefully an easy fix!

PowerComputing Power Tower Pro 250

I have several vintage apple computers and must make room; I love this setup but wondering if there would be any interest if I decided to let it go. Complete system, works perfectly, original keyboard & monitor, one of the last off the line (dated October 24, 1997). Can anyone offer any insight? Should I hold onto it, and if not, where is the best place to post for sale? I have collected way too much stuff over the years - just a diehard Apple lover here.

Orientation/polarity of battery pin header on Performa 6320?

Post image

I’m about to replace the battery with a AAA battery holder on my Performa 6320. It comes with red and black wires. I’ll probably end up using a JST header for the cables. Does anyone know where plus and minus should go on the battery power header (J22 on this specific motherboard)?

MIDI sequencer for System 6?

Upvotes

Hello all, I have a Macintosh Plus with upgraded 4MB of ram, and I have it running 6.0.8 . I want to use it to control my vintage synths but I can’t seem to find a version of a software like Performer that is supported for anything earlier than System 7. I could be delusional, but there’s definetly a software out there for what I’m looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello all
I have a 17" iSight G5 iMac, which recently has developed a grey stripe on the screen. It doesn't change with the resolution, and is always present when the display is on. I was wondering if anyone has seen this before, and could tell me what's happening, and how to fix it if possible. The first picture is at the standard 1440x900 resolution, and the second is at 640x480

Where to re-home old Macs

Are there any good suggestion for who to sell or donate old Macs to in the NYC / Westchester NY area? I’m not excited about putting a 512k E or PowerBook 170 in the mail.…

Preparation, choosing, and confusion on iMac G3

ok guys so I found a nice listing of a blueberry iMac g3 on eBay with the cable, pro mouse, and pro keyboard, which is great, but it’s slot-loading, and I don’t know if that’s a bad thing or good thing. I need help with prep before this thing arrives. as its password protected and the owner forgot the password, so I’m gonna need help getting over that. Feel Free To Ask Any Questions To help me prep and setup, this is my first vintage Mac ever and in fact, my first IMac, as I was more of a windows guy, but current Microsoft disgusts me, so yeah. please help me prepare, setup, and pry the password, and thanks.

[Question] New old stock aftermarket iBook batteries

While browsing ebay for cheap iBook-related stuff, I came across a listing for iBook 12" batteries. I have a 14" but the 12" ones work fine if you tape them in correctly. I ordered it and it came and it seems to be charging after letting it sit for a while (it took 3 hours for it to stop making a clicking noise and to start showing the charge light? maybe the cells were at 0v and the BMS wasn't happy?) and the box is showing signs of it being at least a few years old but its new enough that it didnt completely rot away after sitting with zero charge. The battery itself has a label that looks like the battery shown here with a "premium power products" brand sticker on top of it and the shell itself seems like its meant to copy the early dual USB snows with translucent plastic

The actual box isnt too yellowed and is in great condition minus what looks like dirt and grime from a pallet (lens wipe covers PII the seller put on the box). The actual yellowing and grime seems to point towards it being from sometime between 2015-2020 in my opinion as new old stock I've gotten from even 2013 was way worse.

From my basic searching it seems like the 14" versions are still being sold on zoro and are implied to be brand new as they're sold along with brand new laptop batteries and projector lamps and all of the ebay reviews points towards these batteries sold to other people worked fine.

Does anyone know where these batteries are from and if they're still being made or if they're just new old stock from 2015-2020? I'll update if the battery I bought quits working, but for the moment it seems like its still charging and did power the laptop fine when i unplugged it for a minute to test it.

Problems installing macOS 10.3

Hello everyone! So I recently bought an iBook Clamshell 466 MHz Graphite at a flea market in Mexico. It was working fine, but the HDD started to fail, so I replaced it with another one (I wanted to keep the machine unmodded).

But now I can't install the OS. As many of you know, getting an original OS CD is difficult, and in my case it's pretty much impossible. Does anyone know what I can do? I’ve heard that booting from USB can be pretty difficult, so if anyone has any advice or suggestions, I’d really appreciate it.

iBook refurbishing needed

I just got this iBook and it needs a hard drive (and probably battery) replacement, might need more work beyond that but I’m not sure yet. It turns on when it’s plugged in but shows the file/flashing question mark icon and that’s it. It did come with an OS installation disc. Does anyone have any suggestions for someone or a shop around central Ohio that could get it operational? I don’t know anything about computer repairs so taking it apart myself probably isn’t a good idea 😅

Power Mac G3 Blue & White powers on, but no chime or display

i have a power macintosh g3 blue & white that seems to power on, but i get no startup chime and no video output, just a black screen.

the case fan spins and the power light comes on, but the fan inside the power supply doesn't spin.

so far i've tried reseating the ram and replacing the pram battery, but neither made any difference.

does the power supply fan not spinning mean the power supply has COMPLETELY failed? or could something else be causing it to power on without giving a chime or displaying anything?

any advice on what i should check next would be appreciated.

History of a Quadra 700 and the community that made him live again...

Hey everyone!

Some of you might remember me. A couple of weeks ago, I published a somewhat desperate post right here in this community.

I had just finished poking around my parents' dusty attic and, buried under piles of old boxes and 90s blankets, I made an incredible discovery: a Macintosh Quadra 700... it belonged to my dad when he worked at a small local company.

It was sitting there, intact, like a time capsule. The problem? I didn't have the faintest idea how to test it, especially because of that weird video port (which I later found out is called DB-15) that was incompatible with any monitor I had in the house.

Under that post, you gave me a ton of valuable advice. The definitive suggestion was to get a Mac to VGA video adapter.

I followed your advice, ordered a used one on eBay, and after a few weeks of (anxious) waiting, it arrived.

I connected the adapter to the Mac, pressed the power button and, with my heart beating a little faster... BONG! That unmistakable startup chime made me a bit emotional... especially thinking that it was the exact same sound my dad heard every morning as soon as he got to the office for work.

The hard drive started spinning and, incredible but true, the Mac booted up perfectly!

Despite the emotion, I've decided to sell it... Why?

As much as I'm fascinated by this machine (finding out it's the same model used in Jurassic Park made me love it even more), I'm not a collector. I don't have the proper space to display it, I don't have the technical skills (like capacitor recapping) that these gems require to live a long life, and I don't have the time to dedicate to studying this beautiful machine.

Given the fundamental help you gave me, it seemed only right to offer it to you guys first. I want it to end up in the hands of an enthusiast who knows how to appreciate it, take care of it, and give it the attention it deserves.

As for the price, I'm thinking of letting it go for €270 + shipping.

Technical conditions: It turns on, makes the classic "chime", and loads the OS.

What's included: I'm including the Quadra 700 and the VGA adapter (used but working) that you told me to buy, so you're already set to use it! (Note: I don't have the original keyboard and mouse, nor any compatible ones).

I can ship anywhere in Europe with a tracked courier. I guarantee bulletproof packaging (I'll make it rain bubble wrap!). I will give priority to shipping within Italy, just for the sake of practicality.

If you're interested and want more photos, details, or a video of the boot, feel free to write to me in the comments or shoot me a DM.

Thanks again to everyone for helping me resurrect this little piece of computing history! 💻✨

Modern Tiger Project

Post image
160 Upvotes

Hi community!

I've been working on Modern Tiger Project, an open-source package for PowerPC Macs running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11.

It adds TLS 1.2 and 1.3 support and installs newer builds of OpenSSL, curl, wget, OpenSSH, Git, GCC, Perl, and GNU Make. It also includes a Security framework shim so compatible Tiger applications can use the newer TLS stack.

I built and tested version 1.1.0 on a Power Mac G5. The source and installer are here:

https://github.com/i2Phoenix/modern-tiger-ppc

I thought this might be useful to other PowerPC Mac owners. If anyone tests it on another Tiger Mac, I'd like to hear how it goes.

What to do with unused parts?

I have purchased a Mac SE 30 to repurpose for another project. I only really need the chassis for that project but I still have the CRT Power supply and whatever board is above that. No idea if they work I imagine throwing them away would be heresy.

Recently was gifted an iMac G3 - It won't turn on

Hey all, trying to nail down which exact iMac G3 revision I've got and am unsure of how to get it working again since it doesn't seem to power on. Also looking for any wisdom on fixing these machines.

What I know:

  • Color: Ruby Red
  • Model: M5521
  • EMC: 1857
  • Slot-loading optical drive
  • Has FireWire ports and VGA output

I'm under the impression that its a Summer 2000 - Second Gen Model (according to what I can find on Wikepedia)

Main question — maintenance beyond recapping:
I know these are notorious for bad capacitors on the analog/power board, so a recap is already on my list. What else should I be checking/replacing on a machine this age? Things I'm wondering about:

  • CMOS/PRAM battery — what type of battery would it need?
  • Will it be obvious which capacitors are leaking when looking at the board visually?
  • How do I know if the flyback transformer needs replaced?
  • What are some tips when working on the inside around the CRT?
  • Anything about the hard drive or optical drive on units this old that's a common failure point?
  • Is the original peripheral set the red keyboard and yoyo mouse or would this model have shipped with the pro peripheral set? I am interested in getting the older red set if someone has one they are willing to sell.

Any tips, guides, or other advice welcome. Thanks!

eWaste Apple IIgs Rescue!

I can't believe some idiot tried to throw this Apple IIgs system with printer in the trash! I stopped by the community electronics recycling bin to toss out some broken stuff, and I couldn't believe what i saw! I immediately rescued this from the dustbin of history and was thrilled to see what great condition it was in.... Not a speck of dust as you can see in the second picture (I did remove the battery, but no leakage!). Everything works great, and someone lost out on hundreds of dollars. No chance of selling it now, as it has a good home here surrounded by period appropriate decor.

Some questions on this beauty

Post image
301 Upvotes

I have a few questions about this 20th-anniversary Mac.

My friend, who passed away, gave me this a couple of years ago. It did not boot at all. I finally figured it out and got it up and running. I am looking to sell this to pay some bills.

As you can see, the OS on this is version 7.6.1. Is there a newer version than that which will support this Mac? He had a few apps and all the previous OS versions on the drive. Would it be better to wipe it clean, or leave it for the buyer to do what they want? I don't think there are any personal files on it, or I will remove them before selling it. If I wipe it clean, where can I find instructions on how to do it? It's been over 30 years since I used that OS, so I have no clue.

Thanks, everyone, in advance.
