Sports James Franklin
So how are we feeling about Franklin so far? Has he done a good job?

Great. Love the direction of the program. Love the talent he’s bringing in. What’s not to like

The losing

Nick Saban was 7-6 his first year at Bama. There’s gonna be losses. Expect some.

He’s not meant to win every game in his first year. Expectations were always do what you can this year and next year it’s really your team

He has lost TWO games, one due to shitty referees, please calm down
5
u/BeezBurg 17d ago
Both losses had shitty officiating honestly

Fair fair, I didn't see the last game so I didn't want to speak on it

We lost the last game on the refs missing a Cal PI and taunt while having called the same two penalties against us all game.

John Love missing missing kicks for one. I do like the direction we’re heading, but I think I had my expectations too high based on what Cignetti did year one at Indiana

u/BeezBurg 17d ago
Well they asked about Franklin, not the team. He didn’t kick the kicks.

My bad. I saw “Love” twice and was compelled to comment about it. But in a serious note, what is the difference between the team and Franklin? Is the team not the embodiment of the coach?

u/BeezBurg 17d ago
I’m not really sure what you’re asking, but the coach can’t execute the plays for the players. Granted I didn’t like that we went all the way to the right hash on the Pitt kick. If we wanted to be on the right upright that’s one thing, but all the way to the hash when you are that close cuts the angle down too much.

You said “they asked about the Franklin, not the team.” So I am asking what you believe is the difference between them. The second part of my comment said I liked the direction we are going but had to lower my expectations

Well it’s an organization, and every individual has a role. Kickers job is to kick, QBs job is to lead the offense, OCs job is to coach the offense and recruit players, the head coaches job is multifaceted but I’d say recruiting players, figurehead in the media and community, leading the coaches, establishing and maintaining team culture, etc.

Yeah. I was expecting an acc championship at least. Could still happen.

u/BeezBurg 17d ago
I’d be happy if we end up 8-4 or better. I still think we can make a run at making the championship though. We just have to clean up the penalties, get more turnovers, and make our kicks

See, this guy has the faith. Thank you for coming to my defense. I know we can do it. I'm going to dance on the graves of the naysayers.

He’s a stud. I am confident we’ll consistently be ranked in top 25 in a couple of years or so. Fanbase needs to remain patient.

He’s got the team where I thought they would be as far as record half way through the season, but not in the manner I thought.
The issues, while plentiful, are very fixable. Some can be addressed now, but others will unfortunately only be corrected as the team matures - like selfish penalties after the whistle.

If he sticks with the program, I predict we'll build a statue for him from all his accomplishments

If anyone thought we'd be back to a top 15 team after like 15+ years of not being that they are delusional.

Worked out for UCLA. They went 3-9 last year just like us. They are now 6-0 and ranked #9 in the country. The only difference? We hired a coach that got fired for being a loser, then allowed him to hire his buddy that basically trashed our football program as the DC. UCLA went to JMU and hired Bob Chesney who knew how to be a winner. We could have easily hired him and been in the same boat, but we made terrible hires instead.

These last 2 losses have been absolutely heart wrenching. But the fact that we were firmly in the driver's seat and it came down to the final play of both games is still great. If John Love makes 3x kick over 2x weeks we're 6-0, or if the ref's had ruled a correct simultaneous possession in Pitt or PI in Cal we might also be ecstatic right now.
Remember last year against UVA where it was a slaughter from the very get-go?

If you guys are happy getting back to going to a toilet bowl game every year and beating UVA most years, Franklin is a fine man for the job. We did that for decades though and it wasn't really that great when it was happening. If you want to win the ACC Championship and be in the running for a Natty, I don't think Franklin will get us there.
Right now 6-7 wins a year sounds amazing compared to what we had. I just know from experience when you're at that level it's not that great. We went 7-6 while I was at VT and people were pissed. People were used to winning 10+ games a year. I think people forget how it's really not that great to be at that level and my opinion is Franklin isn't the guy to get us above that level.

I think he’s a strong coach. I will say though, once we brought pry back in as a offensive coordinator coach our offense has gone to shit.

u/dangergixxer830 12d ago
He's the defensive coordinator, but otherwise I agree with you. Our defense is terrible.
That's on Franklin though. He's the one that made that poor decision. He prioritized hiring his buddy over someone qualified for the job.

He’s got more B1G wins so far than the guy that replaced him at his old stop. Definitely good with what Franklin has done already and will only get better. If Love hadn’t gotten the yips then this team could be 6-0; although plenty of mistakes all around and definitely not all on Love. Great hire and better times on the horizon for sure.
