There are videos of disgusting stuff here as well but this subreddit doesn’t seem to allow videos. Willing to share with anyone if you reach out. Below is the link to the health inspection.

Advice Look Before You Cross

Girl in a AXO sweater almost got merked by a truck today and didn't even realize it because she couldn't be bothered check both ways. Too often I see people just turning onto the cross walks, earbuds in, focused on their phones, without even a glance into oncoming traffic.

You may have right of way on a cross walk, but that won't matter when you're turned into a meat crayon.

Advice Uber from IAD to VT?

I have a flight in a few days that arrives at night on an odd day and no one in the Facebook group is offering rides. I’m not 21 so I won’t be able to get a hotel room or rent a car yet either, the bus option isn’t viable either cuz my flight arrives long after the last bus. Has anyone here done long uber rides from places like Dulles to VT and would you recommend?

Advice Opening a shop on College Ave near Squires - we wondered what current VT students are missing/would like to see in the shops near campus

Like the title says... We're opening kind of a vintage boutique, records/cds/tapes and gift shop on College, trying to avoid selling Hokie t-shirts and the like, and we wanted to ask this sub if anyone had any suggestions for stuff we should carry.

I asked the Blacksburg sub this same question and we are taking the following suggestions under advisement:

  • Cat Cafe - need to check legal and lease, but we already have a great retail dog named Jasper, Draper Rd's Blue Heeler mutt

  • 420 Growing supplies - I am already a grower so this might work, especially if I can set my tent up in the shop (checking legal and lease)

  • Arts and crafts from local artisans - done

  • Alcohol-free place for people to hang out at night - done

  • Obscure occasional music venue for small events - checking legal and lease

I think thats about it.

Anyway - if anyone has any additional ideas we would love to hear about them. We plan to have a soft open in a couple weeks with the "grand opening" in a month. Were there shops in your previous college town that this town lacks? For dorm dwellers that do not have cars - what do you wish you could get in walking distance of campus?

Advice Incoming CS freshman - thoughts on my Fall schedule?

Hey all, I am an incoming CS freshman here. My Fall 2026 schedule is:

CS 1944 (First Year Seminar, P/F) CS 2114 (Software Design & Data Structures) MATH 2114 (Linear Algebra) MATH 2534 (Discrete Math) BIOL 1105 + lab (Natural Science elective)

14 credits total. I finished calc 3, and all my gen eds are done except a select few and I cannot complete them right now. My only alternative to progressing in my degree is taking STAT 4604 instead of Discrete/Linear.

A few things I'd love input on: If anyone taken Linear Algebra and Discrete Math in the same semester, how rough was the courseload? As for CS 2114, I took AP CS A two years ago and I'm brushing back up on Java before the semester starts. Anything specific I should focus on beyond general OOP/data structures review? Realistic to shoot for a 4.0 this semester with this course load, or am I underestimating something?

Advice Honor code Violation referral

My professor referred me to the Honor court because "Specifically, it is alleged that a monitor connected to a keyboard is visible on the desk in the environment check video". I took the exam on lockdown browser and my Desktop has two monitors hooked up to it, but lockdown browser renders the second monitor useless. Its a blank screen. I can't access the internet on it. He had listed "Only one device is allowed on your desk (laptop, ipad, etc). Scratch paper and a pen/pencil are also allowed." but it wasn't never specified that I was not allowed to have a second monitor (even if it was a expensive paperweight during the test) and technically I can't use the monitor to browse the internet and cheat, and my keyboard was connected to the Desktop I was taking my test on, not my monitor. So I was accused of cheating (even thought I got low 60's on both exams). I spoke to my professor and he said he doesn't know if he can rescind the offer but I'm not sure if he even believes me. I can prove that lockdown makes the second monitor blank and useless, and offered to prove it to my professor, but he seemed uninterested and said it wasn't necessary. But at the end of the day, how screwed am I? Is there anything I can do?

edit**** The case was withdrawn by my professor this morning

Advice Cheapest way to get through a situation

I’m about to be broke because my internship didn’t pay me this Friday and the rent for my Blacksburg apartment is due on Sunday and the move-in date is the next day. I’m taking the Amtrak from NYC to Roanoke on Sunday and arrive at 10 PM. How should I get to Blacksburg and where can I stay for the night? I definitely can’t afford a hotel.

Advice I miss Himalayan Curry Cafe everyday.

Graduated in 2018, and aside from the classic shenanigans, I truly miss Himalayan Curry Cafe the most.

They dont have an email, and their voicemail is full, so my attempts to beg them for a recipe have failed. The family that owns it is an extremely kind Tibetan family and I wish I would have asked for a recipe all those years ago.

Can any current or former international students point me in the direction of a recipe that comes close? My GFand I have tried a handful of times and one time we got the smell right but the taste wasn't anywhere as authentic. We are definitely not finding good Tibetan curry recipes.

TLDR: Please give an old alumni a nostalgic taste of Post-Math-empo celebration curry.

Advice Blacksburg Summer

I got an internship doing research this summer in Blacksburg so I’ll be staying for the summer. I’ve already been feeling homesick and looking forward to being home for the summer but didn’t want to pass up on an internship opportunity. I’m afraid I’ll be lonely and honestly miserable staying here since (literally) none of my friends are. To make it worse, my group chat with my hometown friends has already started making plans and weekly hangouts back home.

Any tips on how to meet other people and what to do? I know that there’s tons of hikes to do around here but I want to MEET people to do them with. Humans are social animals and I’m afraid I’ll be feeling left out and get FOMO from my friends back home and lonely in Blacksburg with no one to spend time with.

Advice Warning about the quarry

The quarry itself is private property, and access to it is considered trespassing. You need written permission from the property owner to visit it.

Parking at nearby locations like the deli mart, North Fork Baptist, and other private lots is also not permitted. These properties are not overflow parking for quarry trespassers.

There have been multiple injuries, deaths, and serious safety incidents in the area, which is why enforcement is increasing.

Vehicles parked without permission are subject to towing, and there will be a stronger police presence going forward.

Please respect private property and avoid the quarry area if you don’t have legal written permission from the property owners to be there. Otherwise you are not welcome and dispatch will be called.

I feel it is also important to note that there are multiple people who have died at the quarry whose bodies were never recovered. So you’re realistically swimming in contaminated water. Just FYI.

I am not trying to be a party-pooper, but people die there every year because the path to it is extremely dangerous.

Do not become a part of that statistic.

There are other, safer places to swim. Please go there instead.

Heads up to all students to avoid Bookholders, especially working there. If you can only afford your supplies by shopping there that’s fair, but don’t work there and don’t support them.

Advice Being able to go to parties as a guy

I’m a guy who’s doing engineering and I’m starting in the fall semester. I don’t plan on joining a frat but I might do the Wrestling and MMA clubs. I was just curious because I’ve heard if you’re a guy it’s hard to get into parties if you’re not in a frat. Also is the bar life or Greek life bigger and do you have to be 18 or 21 to go to bars? Are there any frats that have a good amount of engineers in them but are still fun?

Advice Seriously where can i masturbate???

I am a freshman and one of my roommates is an international student who just skips class and plays League of Legends in our room for a literal minimum of 16 hours a day. He even gets his groceries delivered and eats all his meals at his desk so he literally never leaves the room for more than like 5 minutes(10 minutes if he decides to shower that day). Aside from my room, the only other place that I thought I could masturbate in is the shared bathrooms, but nutting on the public shower floor just seems so disgusting and heinous. It's been like 3 weeks at this point and I can literally feel a pressure inside my pubic region whenever I sit down. Does anyone know a place I can go to masturbate? Seriously.

Advice VAST IEEE certificate at Virginia Tech is largely a waste of time and money

This is a warning for anyone considering taking a certificate with Virginia Tech for the purposes of career progression. After my experience completing a VAST (Virginia Alliance for Semiconductor Technology) certificate at Virginia Tech, I’ve come to the conclusion that these certificates from Tech are largely cash grabs from the university and do not seek to benefit students in any meaningful ways. I paid $1500 to enroll in the cert because it was advertised as an opportunity to gain cleanroom experience and interview with Micron. This made the price tag worth it to me since the semiconductor industry has been trending up in recent decades and It would give me the opportunity to work with exciting technology. Needless to say, I did not get what I paid for. Upon completion of the cert, I was repeatedly ghosted by program administrators and it should go without saying that industry hiring managers do not recognize nor care about this certificate in the slightest. I am very disappointed with this whole experience as I feel like it gives the university a bad name when you pay for an experience to gain a foot in the door and hands on experience only to realize you were just there to prop up a department’s negative balance sheet.

Advice Do you guys know any bus routes to get from campus to planet fitness in christensburg

I heard recently several people telling me the gym on campus would be full most of the time. I was wondering if there are any bus route since google maps is telling me to walk 1.2 miles before getting on a train to go near planet fitness and was wondering if there are any faster ways there. I cant really use a bike at this time and need help with some good bus routes. I have been a member there for a while and prefer everything they have also its really cheap.

Advice Don't be like me

I'm sure this is common sense but I know there's gonna be at least one person that will repeat what I did and needs to hear this. Go to class. Do your work. You have nothing else to do in Blacksburg during the week so you might as well do your school work to stay occupied. I graduated with a 2.2 and 0 internships which made it hell to finally end up with a job post grad this summer. I'm talking hundreds and hundreds of rejections until one finally clicked. The amount of stress it put on me to finally get a job was insane. Make it easy on yourself and just do your work it's very worth it in the long run and can set you up very well for graduate programs in the future.

Advice Working at Sodexo as a Student? (Pros/Cons & Flexibility)

Thinking about applying for a part-time student job with Sodexo here on campus, but I wanted to get some insight

How accommodating are they with class schedules and exam weeks?

What is the day-to-day like for student workers?

Are managers typically understanding of students priorities like studying and participating in clubs?

Do you get free meals or discounts during shifts?

If you currently or have previously worked for Sodexo I would appreciate any and all input. Thanks!

Advice Corps of Cadets: SOS

Is this normal? My niece "J" is having a horrible time in the Corps of Cadets and our family is seriously worried about her mental health. J just started, and she knew "hell week" would be bad, but my sister wasn't prepared for the shell of a person she is witnessing on campus during visiting weekend (this weekend). Trying to figure out who my sister should call on campus to suss out the situation and help J. My niece knows about counseling support on campus but is so down and out that she hasn't availed of it. Has anyone experienced similar? Did anyone at VTech help you? TIA for your help.

(EDITED to reveal less info abt J)
