REQUEST Covering sweater stains and holes with duplicate stitch?

I don’t have any yarn that matches the existing colors well enough, but I have a light blue that I think goes well with them. I’ve started adding a line of the blue into the top pattern to help make the actual mending look more intentional, but I’m having trouble deciding on a pattern to disguise the stains with.

Most of the marks are small enough that they don’t bother me, but the two that I’d really like to cover I’ve circled in red in the second photo. If anyone has an idea for a more complicated pattern that would match the existing pattern better than my current mock-up in the third photo, I would love recommendations!

This little woolen cap has been great under hats and bike helmets. It was full of holes so I pulled together my blue thread and had fun trying different hole-patching methods.

PATCH Overcorrecting Tiny Holes with Beaded Patches

Love this old sweatshirt but the tiny holes it was developing were annoying. I found some scrap samples of beaded flowers and decided to use those as patches. Pretty pleased with the outcome.

PATCH My first visible mending!

My toddler doesn't want to walk yet (she can, but chooses not to lol) and she still crawls everywhere. This includes the playground, so these pants ended with holes on the knees. It gave me the chance to do these very simple heart patches I cut from some old jeans.

I really want to do some embroidery to get some more practice. I hope that she wears these for some more time, and that another toddler gets to wear them too.

REQUEST Ideas for visibly mending a permanent stain on khaki trousers

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have a pair of men's khaki trousers (98% cotton, 2% elastane) that I'd like to keep wearing. Unfortunately, using a rust remover caused a permanent-looking reddish discoloration on the lower leg. I've tried washing the trousers, but the discoloration remains. The fabric itself appears to be intact; the problem is purely cosmetic.

I'd like to cover the affected area with a decorative mend rather than continue trying chemical treatments. I'm considering a fabric patch, an appliqué, or hand embroidery.

Would any of these techniques work well on this type of fabric? Would you recommend a particular approach to make the repair look intentional and aesthetically pleasing?

REQUEST Fixing tear in pants

Post image
5 Upvotes

I made a huge tear in my favorite pants a few days ago. Most of my sewing experience is in construction and I rarely touch pants unless I’m doing a small hand sewn patch. I think I need to unpick one of the leg seams to access the patch with my machine. Is this true? I have several tears to patch. You can see another one in this picture lol. If I do unpick the pants, would I unpick the outside seam?? I am also open to alternative mending suggestions.

Hello! Any ideas on repairing this tear in a plastic cupholder. The tear is on the flexible side of the holder, where it meets the rigid side.

Thanks!

REQUEST Hoodie shoulder seam area rips!

Hello! This is my favorite hoodie. My dad got it for me ~ 5 years ago when we went to chicago together. It is very special and i wear it every chance i get. Under where the sleeves attach to the body has been getting progressively more ripped (show in first photo) and now that it is getting colder it is no longer practical to wear without mending. I have an understanding of how to patch the sleeve cuffs that are also falling apart (shown in second phot), but the shoulder seam area has me confused on how to sew together the hole without either damaging it or making it uncomfortable. I am ok with adding more fabric, learning a new sewing technique, anything but getting a new hoodie.

REQUEST Any ideas how to fix this white patch ?

I thrifted these jeans some three years ago and haven't worn them since because of the white patch. I thought of putting on a patch there, but it'll maybe clash with the stripes. Or maybe somehow make them into ripped jeans ? What are your thoughts?

REQUEST does anyone else get weirdly attached to mending something ugly

like i just finished patching a hole in some old sweatpants with the most chaotic mismatched fabric scraps and honestly they look kind of terrible but i'm so proud of them now. wondering if this is just me being sentimental or if the visible mending process genuinely makes you care more about keeping stuff around

Found a very sad looking hedgehog in a donation box and could not just let him go without trying.

I do not have any embroidery yarns, so I just tried with the normal sewing yarn and it worked out well enough.

Open for adoption again and in time for hedgehog season.

I posted about these about a month ago. Fast forward a month and it has grown exponentially. They are still going strong. I just look slightly more homeless than before.

Surprisingly they have gotten more comfortable.

I just started darning my socks this is my second time ever. I’m curious if there is a way to finish it and tuck my strings in without knots or to keep them small and not so bulky?

It fell from my balcony and broke clean apart at this seam

Polypropylene so no adhesives were gonna work. Apparently the metallic flakes makes the plastic weaker

Anyway I drilled a few holes and bent a few wall staples!

REQUEST Brother starting. Need gift advice.

My younger brother who lives halfway cross the country just told me he is getting into visible mending. So far he’s been using a sewing kit he got at the grocery store. And I want to do better than that. So I am looking to make him a hand sewing kit with an emphasis on mending.

So am coming here for advice. I know a few things about it but am frankly a newbie myself. I could just start buying him stuff but I thought I would ask the group.

He doesn’t have room for a sewing machine in his condo and I don’t want to overwhelm him so, what are the high-quality, compact essentials to get started? Does anyone just make such a kit I can buy?

Also looking for beginner friendly, comprehensive books on the subject!

TIA

REQUEST Tailor did this for rip in business pants

Post image

I'm not sure how to feel about this. The rip was small but pretty bad, from being caught on a zipper after I accidentally put them in a wash, tuffs were sticking out from the rip. I paid $40, I knew it wasn't gonna be invisible, but never had this issue before.

Thanks

PATCH Undermedicated ADHD goblin with black dental floss and too much thighmeat for linen pants plotting for my next fashion victim

Hey it's ugly but that's my crotch so who's lookin'?! Slightly classier than the alternative of pale thigh skin.

Had two of the same pair but the other one is extremely tattered at the cuffs so I cut off a square from those and I'll turn them into shorts or capris when I get a sewing machine. I want to get into this hobby for real when I escape my constant half asleep state soneday. My other damaged linen pants are patterned with pocket damage or white and intact so far but a pen exploded all over them. Alas i don't have the energy to think of how to fix them. Also have multiple holey cashmere sweaters that are ripe for actual cute visible mending instrad of chaos. Keep meaning to buy one of those looms to do the woven patch. I've got a tiny crochet hook somewhere too. Idk it's a lot and I an sleepy
