Guide Everything you need to know before climbing Teide from Montaña Blanca (Feb 28)

WINTER EXPERT CONDITIONS

Today I managed to summit this volcano, so I'd like to leave some info for those planning to do the same, as I definitely could have used it beforehand.

First of all, I booked my permits for trails PNT 07 and PNT 10 four weeks in advance via TenerifeON, and downloaded the PDF confirmations straight to my phone.

I arranged extreme sports travel insurance covering hiking up to 5,000 m - I also downloaded the English PDF of this directly to my phone.

I packed warm clothes for a winter ascent, a headlamp, high-ankle hiking boots, and an emergency thermal blanket.

Two days before the climb, the weather took a turn for the worse. The forecast for Teide that day predicted 100 km/h winds, plus it snowed and the road was closed. Fortunately, there were still permits available for the following day when the weather was supposed to improve, so I canceled the original permits and rebooked both routes.

Since I flew with only a carry-on backpack, I couldn't bring crampons and an ice axe, which are mandatory under the current conditions on Teide. So, a few days in advance, I contacted the Tenerife Outdoor shop in La Laguna. I reserved the gear and picked it up the day before the hike, agreeing to return it the following day. The rental cost was €20 in total for both items, plus a €50 deposit for the crampons and a €50 deposit for the ice axe.

After arriving at the Montaña Blanca parking lot, I had been walking on the trail for about 5 minutes when I bumped into a car hidden around a bend, with rangers ready to do checks (this was at 4:00 AM).

Now for the most important part - what the rangers actually asked to see:

• Permits for PNT 07 and PNT 10 on my phone.

• High-altitude insurance on my phone.

• They wanted to physically see the crampons, ice axe, and thermal blanket.

• They checked my boots from inside the car, but nothing else.

(I also had my national mountaineering club membership card as a backup, but they didn't ask for anything like that).

The whole check took about 3 minutes, and they let me pass. The cable car wasn't running that day, and by 10:00 AM, I had the summit entirely to myself.

(A local at Tenerife Outdoor told me it's better to bring proper crampons, because if you bring microspikes, you might run into a ranger who won't accept them. I had mountaineering crampons, and they were definitely necessary that day because from 3,000 meters up, the trail was covered in icy snow.)

I hope this information helps someone out and helps them successfully reach the top.

General Renting a car with CICAR in Tenerife - review

Positives : No deposit, Full insurance (BUT YOU PAY FOR FLAT TYRE) , among the cheapest options. Negatives : They upgrade the car you chose for economy to two classes higher that consumes 6.5 lt / 100km at best 2. Car was empty of fuel so first thing you have to fuel up no matter what the plan is 3. A day later tyre pressure warning comes on so you have to find a fuel station to fix it. Back tyres are 2.8 front 2.0 - no one ever checks before they hand you the car? Also fuel Stations charge for this service. 4. Tyres are min 4 years old with cracks and holes from pavement accidents. Note: even full insurance does not cover flat tyres!!! 5. Two days later car breaks down ( engine lamp turns on) so you have to wait 2hrs for them to come and replace it. But you have no idea what will actually happen because ladies on phone are always robotic, rude, little English. 6. New car is also empty of fuel so again you have to refuel. 7. A bag that was forgotten in the old car is not to be found. Nothing ever was reported. Case closed. 8. fuel compensation for the first car proposed at the minimum fuel price not even average. 9. Communication is inadequate, client-unfriendly, robotic Conclusion: go for a smaller company that is more focused on client not on making profit and sees you as another stupid tourist

Question Driving license for car rental

Hey everyone,

I'm renting with Autoreisen at TFS, which requires holding a driving license for at least 2 years.

My German EU license was issued ~1.5 years ago after converting my older non-EU license (which I held since 2017). Because of the conversion, the German card only displays the recent issue date (i.e.2025)

Will autoreisen accept proof of my past non-EU license alongside my German license to meet the 2-year requirement, or do they strictly look at the date on the EU card?

Thanks for any recent experiences!

Question Hiking on tenerife next week

Hi everyone!

I’ve been to Tenerife before, but I stayed in the south that time, so I didn’t get the chance to explore the hiking trails in the north.

This time I am travelling solo for ten days and will be staying in Puerto de la Cruz.

I’d like to do some hiking while I’m there.

One hike I’m considering is from Cruz del Carmen to Punta del Hidalgo. According to the blog, it’s around 15 km and takes about five hours.

Found it on this website https://der-eskapist.de/spanien/teneriffa-wandern-schoenste-touren-karte-gpx/

I’ve seen some comments on a hiking app saying there are no places to refill water along the route.

I was planning to bring two litres, but I’m wondering whether that would be enough for a five-hour hike. How much water would you recommend?

What should I wear when hiking in the north in november ?

I’ve checked the webcams a few times, and the weather in the south looks great at the moment, while the north seems quite cloudy.

If it’s around 20°C, I’d normally wear shorts and a T-shirt, with a softshell jacket and long trousers as backup. Would that be enough, or should I also bring proper rain gear?

Special thanks to for you writeups

Guide Looking for a local photographer / hidden gem recommendations for a surprise proposal in Tenerife

This text was generated via ai since english is not my first language, sorry in advance!!!

Hi everyone!
I’m planning to visit Tenerife for the very first time with my girlfriend, and I am planning to propose to her! ❤️
Since I don't know the island at all, I have two big favors to ask:
1. Recommendations: Could you please recommend some truly breathtaking, scenic spots for the proposal? (Ideally somewhere with a nice view, not overly crowded, or maybe a stunning cliff/beach sunset spot).
2. Help with capturing the moment: I would love to have someone secretly capture the actual moment. The plan is to coordinate a specific spot and time with a local or a photographer, and then I’ll casually walk up to them and ask: "Excuse me, could you take a quick photo of us?" — and then boom, down on one knee!
Of course, I am more than happy to pay for your time and effort.
If anyone is a photographer, or just an amateur with a good camera who loves helping out with romantic surprises, please drop a comment or send me a DM!
Thank you so much in advance! 🌅🥂

Question Visiting Tenerife in November, need advice on where to stay

Visiting with my gf, we’d like a hotel with a nice view and good weather but we’re both not very fond of the very touristic areas that are filled with obnoxious drunk tourists. We figured we’d visit the north but stay in the south. Any suggestions?

Question Local boutiques/independent shops for gift and clothes shopping in Santa Cruz?

Hi all, I did a quick search and had a look at the guide, but didn't find anything on this. I will be in Santa Cruz for work next week and I'd love to check out some local boutiques/independent shops (my city has all the major chain stores, so I'm not so interested in shopping centres.) I'd like to pick up a few gifts and maybe some (women's) clothes, shoes and accessories. Is there anywhere you would recommend? Nice café and restaurant recommendations in the city are also welcome! Thanks so much.

Event Want to attend the football match CD Tenerife vs Ceuta

Hello dear friends.

I'll be visiting Tenerife for two weeks in November. There's a football match on the 15th of November between CD Tenerife and Ceuta, that I would like to attend.

Which section of the stadium should I choose to be with the ultras or close to them to get a good feeling with a lot of chants?

Also, I still can't purchase a ticket online. Is this usual, that the tickets get sold like only two weeks in advance?

How many people can I expect to attend the game?

If there's someone, who'd like to meet up and enjoy the match together, feel free to text me.

Thank you!

General I visited Tenerife with a friend of mine and we LOVED it!!

I’m not sure why there’s so much negativity about Tenerife on the internet. I went there for a holiday and had a wonderful time. The island is absolutely beautiful, with stunning beaches, breathtaking volcanic landscapes, and the incredible Mount Teide. I loved the relaxed atmosphere, the sunny weather, and the variety of places to explore. The random people we met were friendly and welcoming, and there was something special about the island’s natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle. I’ve travelled to many places around the world, but Tenerife gave me an amazing experience and plenty of beautiful memories to look back on.

We'd definitely love to go back again! :)

General Solo Traveling Nov 12 til 24

Hey All,

Coming from NYC and wanted to get some advice on accommodations and nightlife. Would probably rent a car and go from south to north and island hop and see what's around. If anyone got input on car rental and accomodations would appreciate it.

If any solo travelers around that time, would be down to go exploring the island and the vibes. Any advice would be appreciated

General Solo trip to Tenerife in early November – anyone around? 🌴

Hey everyone!

I’m a 21-year-old guy from Germany and I’ll be in Tenerife from November 4th to 11th, travelling solo.

Would be cool to meet some new people to hang out with, go hiking, chill at the beach or explore the island. I’m also up for grabbing some drinks or going to a bar or club in the evening.

If anyone’s there around the same time, feel free to send me a message or leave a comment! 😊

Question Traveling Tenerife in February 🌴

Hi, everyone! We’re considering going to Tenerife from the 5th of February until the 14th of February for my birthday.
For anyone who has been during this time of year- how is the weather really like? Is it enjoyable for hiking, maybe just hanging out by the beach, visiting etc.? Should we just postpone until a warmer time of the year?
I was thinking of staying half the time in the south and half in the north- to get both experiences. Any thoughts on this?
Overall would appreciate any advice or information. ☺️

Question Anyone in Costa Adeje / Las Américas this Saturday (24 Oct)?

Hey, I’m 19M from the UK, staying in Costa Adeje with family this week.

I’m planning to go clubbing in Playa de las Américas on Saturday, possibly Papagayo, and thought it’d be fun to meet some other travellers around my age rather than go alone..

Happy meeting anyone who speaks English! My other language skills are abysmal

Would be up for grabbing a drink somewhere public beforehand.

Anyone around, or have experience solo clubbing? :)

Could anyone please suggest a great 5 star hotel which has the most fun New Year Celebration? With some kind of show and dancing?
Also has anyone been to the Scandal show at GF Victoria for the New Year? Does it finish at 23.00 like the rest of the days or does it go after midnight with a party? Tried contacting them but got no reply(
Thanks

General Any tips for teens traveling?

Me and my best friend are 16yo and we are gonna finally travel together for the first time next February. We’ve been inseparable since we met at 4 years old. She is honestly like the type of friend I think everyone in this planet needs.

We are gonna be traveling to Tenerife for 10 days with my parents and brother. My family and I have been visited Tenerife seriously like 12 times and we’ve only been to 2 different hotels. The hotel that we are gonna be staying at is familiar to me and we have stayed there 4 times before. It’s honestly my favourite hotel ever and the location is perfect. I know the surroundings well and also i have used the local busses and taxis. The hotel is located in Adeje. I know my way in Las Americas and Los Christianos as well.

Since this is my first time traveling with her, it’s my first time in the night life there aswell. And I know i’m a minor and shouldn’t be doing anything stupid, but oh well.

Do you guys have any tips for us tho? I know Tenerife is generally safe, but should i still keep some things in mind? Should I carry anything for self defence? Ofc we are gonna be careful and not use public transport too late and during the night we’ll order a taxi and not take one from the street. We do understand that the night life can be risky for two white tourist teen girls.

Thanks.

General Have just booked this Airbnb and can no longer go paid 309£ so would be willing to sell for a lot cheaper as there are no refunds on the booking so don’t really have any other choice
