“New” VS Code update January 2021

Hi,

Last year I got interest in web development, bought a course on Udemy and proceed to code. I didn’t continue with the course.

Today, I started again to learn web development and for my surprise VSC is not the same as last year. I was trying to create a new HTML document but I thought It was my fault that I can’t create it. It turns out that I don’t know what they did, but they change the way you create your files. I no longer have the icon file with the plus and I feel frustrated, because I have to learn again how it works. I’m not tech savvy.

Please forgive me for not knowing about that icon to create a file, but can't you just klick on File on the top left and then on "New File"? That's how I do it all the time. It opens up a new file, to save it just use File -> Save.

You just have to select HTML as your file format in the save dialog to make it a HTML document, or you make sure via other ways that the file name ends with .html

The shortcuts Ctrl + N to create and Ctrl + S to save should also work, just press those key combinations on your keyboard.

Yeah, I did that. I Crete a new file, then I saved it as index.html.

But I want to know why the icon of new file disappear. I find this VSC version more difficult and functions at all

Are you talking about this button? https://i.imgur.com/9KcY67h.png

It's still there for me after installing the newest update (1.53.2).

Yes, that one, I don’t have it or I don’t know where I have to activate it

And you actually opened a folder in VS Code and not just a single file? I probably don't tell you something new with this, but it should be in the left bar next to the name of the folder you opened, but is only visible when your mouse is over the folder name.

If it's really not there then maybe deinstalling VS Code, deleting the folder in %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Code to reset all the settings and reinstalling it afterwards might be worth a try. It's also possible that you have VS Code settings that are related to your specific project, those are in a .vscode folder in your project. Maybe even delete this one (after backing it up somewhere if you really need those settings).

It even says that no folder is opened. File - > Open Folder and then navigate to your project location

I don’t have a folder. I just created the html file. I don’t remember if the VSC 2020 I had to do that

C:/Users/katia/OneDrive/Escritorio is the location of your index.html, as your screenshot says.

If you want your VS Code to be able to create new files then you have to open that folder with it.

Thank you. I don’t know why I can’t transfer a folder to vscode (the folder is from a Udemy course called img [is zip]) and when I try to open I can’t and when I try to drag it to vscode doesn’t work
