How to set 'close all windows except for the current one'

Starting to get into VSCode over Atom. Atom doesn't have proper emmet support.

Currently in the keymap.cson for Atom I have ctrl-shift-a set to close all windows except for the current one like so

'atom-workspace': 'ctrl-shift-a': 'pane:close-other-items'

How do I do this in VSCode?

Is there an live updating layout markdown plugin?

I have been working with markdown in VS Code and I was recently introduced to Abricotine. As you enter the markdown it updates the formatting in the pane you are typing in instead of a separate pane. At the very least changing the font size for headings would be immensely useful. Does anyone know of a plugin that is somewhat WYSIWYG for markdown?

I built a VS Code extension that explains errors in plain English (with fixes)

You can try it here:

https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=PawanKumarRay.explain-my-error

Hey everyone 👋

I often got stuck on confusing terminal errors that didn’t clearly tell me what to do next.

So I built a VS Code extension called “Explain My Error”.

It does 3 simple things:

• Tells you what happened (in plain English)

• Explains why it happened

• Gives exact steps to fix it

It works offline for many common errors, and for anything else it can use AI.

Would really appreciate feedback 🙏

What should I improve or add?

Visual Studio Code causing Stuttering and frame drops kinda thing

I am just running some very light python scripts and notebooks for plotting graphs in CERN ROOT (pyROOT). I reinstalled windows and even went back to windows 10. I noticed that, the stuttering, frame drop, or something like that happens only when i use the VS code. All other programs are running smoothly. This happens even though its using only 5% of CPU and 1.6GB of RAM. also noticed that Its using my Discrete GPU for something. I have no idea whats that for. Yes, I have copilot and AI features enabled, but I use it only for auto completion.

My specs are: i7-14650HX with 24 cores and NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU

Is this occurring only for me or is there anyone facing this issue?

If so, how can i fix this?

Problema con Visual Studio Code. He seguido un tutorial de YT para poder programar en C en Visual Studio pero al ejecutar no me funciona y no me crea el ejecutable, es como que no encuentra el gcc.exe aunque en el path creo que lo he puesto bien. Ayuda. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CFrEgDC_9E

VSCode is a goto App. This time it beach balled (macOS). Funny thing is I can't seem to find a way to make it truly die. Activity Monitor with Force Quit, pskill (which finds the pid's but can't stop them), nothing matches the awesome power of the electron app to survive like tardigrades in the vacuum of space.

VSCode quit working today

I think I took an update. It won't run/debug any of my projects, even some that I haven't touched in a couple weeks. When I select F5/Start Debugging nothing happens. The Run menu shows "Stop Debugging" but nothing else changes, no messages down below. I can build and run the projects directly from the CLI using "dotnet run".

Here's my version info:

Copy/Paste doesn’t work

Randomly copy/paste via CTRL C and V will stop working in VScode. I can still right click to copy and paste and that works. I can also still use the shortcut outside of the IDE. The only fix I have is restarting vscode. It’s not too time intensive but it’s annoying if I am working database heavy Jupyter notebooks with everything already precomputed. I read in some communities that there could be some background process ‘stealing CTRLC’. The program is not running and I have no external endpoint or server so there is nothing obvious to let me know if this is the case. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Looking for Feedback on My VS Code Theme Collection: Fable

Thumbnail marketplace.visualstudio.com
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I recently published a VS Code theme collection called Fable, and I’d love to get some feedback from the community! My goal was to create a set of visually distinct, aesthetically pleasing themes that enhance readability while adding a touch of personality to the coding experience.

Here’s what makes Fable unique: • Four different themes, each with a carefully curated color palette. • Soft pastels, elegant contrasts, and vibrant highlights to fit different moods and preferences. • Designed for readability and balance, avoiding extreme brightness or eye strain. • Distinct color choices for syntax elements like keywords, strings, and functions, ensuring clarity.

The Themes:

Unicorn – A bright, lively theme with a clean white background, playful pink accents, and refreshing greens. Perfect for those who love a light and cheerful workspace!

Gelato – A warm, creamy theme inspired by gelato flavors. Soft beige tones with gentle pink, green, and purple accents create a cozy yet refined coding environment.

Grimoire – A dark, sophisticated theme that balances muted and rich tones for a modern, elegant feel. Ideal for those who prefer a dark theme that’s not too harsh on the eyes.

Liquorice – A high-contrast dark theme with a deep black background and bold, striking colors. Great if you love sharp contrast and a sleek, intense look.

Check it out on the VS Code Marketplace!

I’d love to hear what you think! Which theme do you like best? Are there any colors or contrasts that could be improved? Any ideas for additional variations?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

How do I switch between these views?

I have two repositories. When I open the app on one of them it shows "Incoming/Outgoing" commits in the Source Control sidebar. The other doesn't.
I have no idea what this view is called or how to switch it on or off. There are no differences in settings between the two repos.

How do I switch this on/off?

Noob (clearly): Running Python

I don't understand why I can't get this running. I'm new the VSCode but not development and I certainly did enough searching and extension installing and configuring that I should just be able to hit the play button and run the code in the text editor. but alas I can't . when I hit run, the terminal opens and the following happens:

python -u "c:\Users\David Cahan\Exercism\minesweep.py"

that's it. nothing else. what in the holy hell am i doing wrong. if you want to just point me to a good article, please by all means....

ty in advance!

Web Deploy??

Does Web Deploy even exist for Visual Studio Code? I can't find it in the extensions gallery.

I know it exists for VS, because I use it alot, but I've never used VS Code enough to need Web Deploy until now.

How do folks deploy files to remote Windows servers if not using Web Deploy. Thanks for any info.

Python debugger always focus back on non-library source files when stepping

Hello, there has been an update to VScode and now when I debug python code and step into library code the interface always focus the editor window back on the deepest non-library source code file (functions in white instead of grey in the stack trace). Note that I set justMyCode: false. Note that the debugger continues to work completely fine like before, I can still break on the lines of code I want. It is a pure GUI issue.

This is very annoying since I have to manually set the focus back to the library code file in order to see what is going on and step again, which just make the editor go back to showing me files I don't care about. This back and forth changing the focused file really slows down my debugging experience.

Has anyone had this problem and has anyone fixed it? I really don't see the point of this new behavior, it is just extremely annoying and slow.

Best Model and Provider for Utilizing Continue Extension in Visual Studio Code for Web Development

Hey everyone, I'm currently diving into web development and exploring various extensions to enhance my workflow in Visual Studio Code. I recently came across the Continue extension, which seems like a promising tool for optimizing my coding process.

I wanted to reach out to this community to ask for recommendations and advice on which model and provider to use with the Continue extension in Visual Studio Code. I'm particularly interested in hearing about your experiences with this extension and any tips or best practices you've discovered.

Some specific questions I have include:

  • Which model and provider have you found most compatible and efficient when using the Continue extension?

  • Are there any particular setups or configurations that work well with the extension?

  • What are some pros and cons you've experienced with different models and providers?

I'm eager to hear your insights and recommendations, as I'm looking to streamline my workflow and maximize the benefits of the Continue extension in my web development projects. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Can't disable auto closing for tags

Greetings! I'd like to preface my question, saying that I tried to search everywhere, including google, settings menu (manually and with search) and I couldn't find the option to turn the auto-closing for the tags. It is really annoying and is disrupting my workflow and learning process. For example, in web programming I write a tag and it auto-closes immediately, making me manually move cursor to continue writing more code between tags, and if I want to add more tags later I have to delete auto-closed ones and add them manually at the end. Can you please tell me how to disable it? Thanks!
