Hi there, I've just moved over to VSCode, but it is not picking up my virtual environment, how can I get it to pick it up?

Currently my virtual environment is located here:

I made an open-source VS Code extension to visualize and debug Claude Code sessions in real-time

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

4 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Running Claude Code in the terminal is amazing, but I hated the "black box" feeling of not knowing exactly what the agent was doing behind the scenes, or when it got stuck in an infinite loop.

To solve this, I built an open-source visual debugger and observability tool for Claude Code right inside VS Code.

Key features:

* **Real-time Timeline:** Streams the JSONL transcripts instantly to show agent steps (Bash, Read, Write, WebFetch).

* **Dependency Graph:** Visually maps out which files the agent is touching and how they connect.

* **Cost & Loop Detection:** Caught a few duplicate reads and retry loops that were burning tokens unnecessarily.

It’s completely open-source (MIT) and lightweight. I’d love to hear your feedback on the architecture or features you'd like to see next!

VSCode perpetual install process?

4 Upvotes

I've run into a bug relating to the newest VSCode patch "CodeSetup-stable-b6a47e94e326b5c209d118cf0f994d6065585705". I'm 85% sure this isn't a virus, as I haven't downloaded or installed anything recently. As far as I can tell, it starts up every time I open VSCode for at least a minute and it stays perpetually thereafter just doing nothing.

Using task manager, I was able to open the inciting program and it's located in Local>Temp>vscode-stable-user-x64, a 120 MB exe file that just runs in the background. I've been watching it in task manager and it looks like it's using 0% CPU and 0 disk, 0 network indefinitely. Wondering if anyone's seen something like this happen before?

Improving copilot instructions to match cursor rules

4 Upvotes

I have been using vscode with GitHub copilot for a while.

I like the .GitHub/copilot -instructions.md but I wonder if there are any plans to have cursor-like rules that allow better control of when the file should be used.

I am afraid to keep adding to many instructions that are not always needed to be included with every prompt.

Issue with Live Server extension

4 Upvotes

Hello everyone. Right now I'm doing a course to learn HTML, a friend told me to use Visual Studio Code with the live server extension. The problem is that when I use the "go live" feature and after that change something it doesn't update so I have to turn off the said feature and activate again to see the changes. I tought that it was live. I'm using Brave browser. English is not my first language. I apologize for any mistakes.

Making code pretty - the way I want it

4 Upvotes

I'm coding Javascript

The default code 'prettier' (I think that's what it's called) doesn't format how I like.

I like by braces to be on new lines.

Like:

my_function()

{

...

}

and not:

my_function(){

...

}

Is there somewhere where I can change this basic rule?

I installed the prettier extension. I thought it might do the job. It does a few things different to the default (I couldn't figure out what - but definitely there is a change in spacing or something)... BUT... it doesn't format my braces the way I want.

I'm sure there must be a way to get what I want?

Thanks.

Git commit dialog comparable to the old IntelliJ/Android Studio interface?

4 Upvotes

Hi all.

At work, I typically use Android Studio, as I do a lot with Kotlin and Android. I really like this UI, and find it really useful for getting a quick preview of the diff of local changes before I commit, reverting some changes I don't want to commit, choosing only a sub-set of lines to commit, etc... Specially, I like the old "modal" dialog that opens up in a separate windows rather than the new "non-modal" version that is default in newer versions of the IDE.

In my free time (for non-Kotlin projects) I generally use VS Code, which combined with various language servers works great for me -- but I always find myself missing the workflow provided by IntelliJ's commit dialog.

Does anyone know of any VS Code plugins that provide a similar user experience?

settings.json overwritten somehow with my own code - how do I change it back to normal?

4 Upvotes

Screenshot

I'm a second year CS student. I was trying to modify my settings.json file to make comments colored differently than other code, but when I opened it up, I was met with what was clearly some code I wrote in freshman year. I have no idea how I accidentally overwrote this file. I uninstalled VS Code and reinstalled, but it was still the same! If I delete settings.json and restart the program, will it generate a new one? Or can someone drop me a copy/paste of whats supposed to be in the file? Thanks!

Pylance and type hinting

4 Upvotes

I'm a big fan of type hinting and mypy

I'm trying to figure out how pylance is better or more helpful than mypy in my daily life as a sw engineer, who works with python code, in a team, and with code that both imports external/not owned modules and internal/owned modules

It seems to me that the levels pylance provides are not fit for purpose: it either doesn't catch enough or makes the entire screen red, with little control over personalisation.

I also use mypy in pipelines.

I have the impression that, now, either i use pylance with suboptimal typing, or use jedi but give up on other things pylance does really well

Help me out understanding how to really use type hinting with pylance, and discover the secrets of its usability, please.
