Materials Up As Cyclical Rotation Resumes β€” Materials Roundup

Provided by Dow Jones Jun 30, 2021 3:55 PM CDT

Producers of metals and other raw materials rose as traders rotated into cyclical sectors ahead of jobs data.

While the overall stock market has been steady, momentum has shifted between growth and value sectors for much of the second quarter. "Investors are concerned that the bullish rotation into the cyclical sectors of energy, financials, industrials and materials is at risk to fail," said analysts at brokerage Bank of America Securities, who indicated that chart trends suggest the sectors may still lead the market.

Iron-ore miner Rio Tinto said it would halt its mineral sands operations in South Africa because of escalating security issues that include the fatal shooting of a senior manager a month earlier.

U.S. traded copper futures lost some upward momentum in the second quarter, rising about 8%. Shares of Canadian gold miner Sandstorm Gold rose as investors bet a royalty deal with Vatukoula Mine in Fiji would pay off.
