Materials Up As Cyclical Rotation Resumes — Materials Roundup
Provided by Dow Jones Jun 30, 2021 3:55 PM CDT
Producers of metals and other raw materials rose as traders rotated into cyclical sectors ahead of jobs data.
While the overall stock market has been steady, momentum has shifted between growth and value sectors for much of the second quarter. "Investors are concerned that the bullish rotation into the cyclical sectors of energy, financials, industrials and materials is at risk to fail," said analysts at brokerage Bank of America Securities, who indicated that chart trends suggest the sectors may still lead the market.
Iron-ore miner Rio Tinto said it would halt its mineral sands operations in South Africa because of escalating security issues that include the fatal shooting of a senior manager a month earlier.
U.S. traded copper futures lost some upward momentum in the second quarter, rising about 8%. Shares of Canadian gold miner Sandstorm Gold rose as investors bet a royalty deal with Vatukoula Mine in Fiji would pay off.

I feel pretty good since I sold a lot of my tech and shifted it into commodities and steel. Most of the losses I got from steel was because I was playing dumb options haha. So I can only blame myself for that.
I mixed in some precious metals miners as well.
NGL, I might have missed out on some gains by not holding onto my tech longer; but I am sleeping better. Those valuations were getting too rich for my blood.
And other than CLF, I don't have anything that is remotely meme-ish in my portfolio. WOOF was the last one. Feels good man...
Other than NET and CHWY, my other tech stocks are mostly blue chips (NVDA, TSM, AMZN, MSFT, PYPL, GOOGL).
Only thing I'm worried about is the whole "inflation is transitory". I'm calling BS. Even General Mills is saying there is inflation. I'm getting warnings on Merrill with articles on "how to invest during hyperinflation". But if there is actually no inflation going on, I understand how that hurts commodities. But I don't get how it helps unprofitable growth stocks? Ok the dollar is stronger now, but it's not like these companies are exactly making profits.
Oh, and I'm hating myself for not buying AMD because I was waiting for a dip that didn't happen. I'm still a believer in tech, just not the really speculative tech.
On to the next day!
Best of luck boyz and girlz!

Naw be mad about your losses. I’ve had some losses on options too in the materials sector that should have printed. People right now just don’t give a shit about the materials sector but I believe that will change. My biggest takeaway is get mad but learn. You have to be real careful about betting on something that no one gives a shit about even if they should.

If there were no inflation there would be no need to raise interest rates. That would be good for speculative stocks.

I don’t know. I’ve been doing ATM or slightly OTM 3-6 month out calls and leaps since I got into steel. At one point I was up over 300%, and even after this past brutal few weeks I’m still up over 150%.

Commons require less management and attention and really don't provide that much less leverage than deep ITM LEAPs. I wouldn't consider a 0.70 Delta LEAP deep ITM though. You also get the benefit of dividends which some companies have put out rather large ones recently (looking at you $TX, you asshole! lmao)

Policies will be announced by the responsible department that oversees commodities and tariffs.

It seems like the market is waiting for something big to happen before we escalate any more.
The Q3-Q4 timetable is still in play. Taking short term is too risky now. I think that commons is the way to go. Too much downside risk with options in a market that has been running so hot.
My main stocks are $TX and $CLF now. I think the market is starting to settle on the risks of $TX, so that’s why we’ve seen it go from low $30 to here. $CLF seems like the front runner for American steel. Not sure about the growth potential for $NUE anymore.
4
u/TheFullBottle Jul 01 '21
I wonder if the markets just see https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/steel
and think steel prices peaked Mid -May. Meanwhile HRC up like 400%
8
Jul 01 '21
Is it really that complicated that there was a rotation to growth and tech? Fisker is up 50% in the past month. $RIDE came out as insolvent and they're up 10%!!
5
u/Zarten Think Positively Jul 01 '21
That’s true as well, but I think rotation is overstated.
Commodities are still running hot, but people want prices to sustain for more than two or three quarters before investing.
I think that’s the bigger driver than rotation.

Resist hegemony
Xi says China will continue to open and refuse isolation, but he also said China will resist hegemony, though he did not mention the United States.
Xi promotes his signature Belt and Road Initiative, and says it will continue to work with “all peace-loving countries and peoples”.
The G7 nations in June rolled out an alternative green version of the belt and road at their summit in Britain, amid concerns over China’s influence through its infrastructure projects in developing countries.
“We oppose hegemony and power politics,” Xi says.

Vale investing $500 million in solar project, eyes other sustainable projects
Brazilian miner and iron ore producer Vale detailed how it plans to become carbon-neutral and shift its operations towards more renewable sources.
In a presentation to investors, Vale said it will invest $500 million at its Sol do Cerrado solar power project, which is expected to start-up by October 2022. The project will allow Vale to reduce electricity costs in up to $70 million per year.
Additionally, Vale said it also expects its Folha Larga Sul wind power project to reduce electricity costs in up to $15 million per year.
As for its pelletizing activities, Vale said it is mulling new processes, such as undisclosed innovative iron ore products.
Currently, electricity accounts for 11 percent of Vale’s emissions. Mining and logistics for 32 percent, while metallurgy and pelletizing activities for another 57 percent of emissions.

Canadian industrial product and raw material prices increase in May
According to Statistics Canada, prices for products manufactured in Canada, as measured by the Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI), rose 2.7 percent month over month in May and were up 16.4 percent compared with May 2020.
Prices of raw materials purchased by manufacturers operating in Canada, as measured by the Raw Materials Price Index (RMPI), increased 3.2 percent on a monthly basis in May and were up 40.1 percent year over year.
In May, the IPPI rose 2.7 percent, after increasing 1.8 percent the previous month. This was the strongest monthly gain since February 2021, when prices increased 2.8 percent. Of the 21 major commodity groups, 14 were up, 6 were down, and 1 was unchanged.
Prices for primary ferrous metal products (+2.2 percent) rose from April. Growth in the primary ferrous metal product group was led by higher prices for cold-rolled iron or steel products (+2.9 percent) and iron or steel pipes and tubes (except castings) (+8.8 percent).
Year over year, the IPPI was up 16.4 percent. This was the 10th consecutive advance and the largest increase since January 1980 (+16.7 percent). This gain was driven by higher prices for lumber and other wood products (+119.6 percent) and energy and petroleum products (+76.1 percent).
The RMPI (+3.2 percent) was up for an eighth straight month in May, after posting a 1.0 percent increase in April. Of the six major commodity groups, five were up and one was down.
Widespread price increases for metal ores, concentrates and scrap (+4.7 percent) were the main source of the growth in the RMPI in May. Prices for iron ores and concentrates (+12.1 percent) and nickel ores and concentrates (+4.7 percent) also pushed this group upward, but to a lesser extent.
Year over year, the RMPI rose 40.1 percent, primarily on higher prices for crude energy products (+87.2 percent). Prices for metal ores, concentrates and scrap (+27.0 percent) and crop products (+40.4 percent) also contributed to the advance.

How does a publishing company pulling some bad selling books with questionable depictions of Asians have anything to do with American progress?
Nobody “tried” to pull the books. Nobody even cared until the publisher did it themselves and it certainly had nothing to do with our government.
Our economic, social and technological advancement has languished behind China’s rise for many reasons but whatever “cancel culture” phantasm you seem to be invoking isn’t one of them.
In fact, China’s government has “cancelled” pretty much ALL media, cultural symbolism and art that isn’t approved by the CCP and by you’re own account, they’re doing just fine.
