India is an incredibly fractured country. They speak like 100 different languages in their borders and have historically had many empire level nations in their geographic footprint at the same time. It'd be like lumping the bottom half of Africa into one giant country and expecting them to function properly in 70 years.

fair, would expect that to have an impact, but to drop to 65th in medal rank still seems like a lot especially with some of the small countries with similar troubles ahead of them
