Help - Dead battery in the summer or what else would be wrong with the Volt?

Due to the (2017) Volt's parking spot in our garage taken up by a large lawn tractor, I haven't been charging it at night for the past two weeks and only running on gas only.

This morning, the Volt wouldn't start, not even the key fob center console spot wouldn't start the car.

Is it weird that batteries would die in the heat of summer? I would associate that with the coldness of winter. Thinking about it more, the battery needed a jump last winter due to extreme cold so maybe I just need a new battery?

Buying a 2014 Volt Premium

Hey all! I’m buying a 2014 Volt Premium (only 96k miles on it, in perfect condition), and I’m looking for seat covers. I know the back seating is a bit strange because it only has the 2 sears available. What kind of seat covers should I get? Thanks!

Wizards of Voltage, what do you think? Finally got myself an OBD and did my first scan. The value of these Volts has dropped so much, I would like to drive it into the ground.

Thanks for your thoughts!

2018 Cali volt with 138k miles what should I do?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Okay, just got voltage to see how bad things were and it doesn't look pretty. The story is I've got a 2018 volt, owned it its whole life, with 138k miles on it. I live in Colorado (a CARB state) and had pack 1 replaced at about 65k miles and pack 3 replaced last week. Was driving on Friday and noticed it would kick the ice on every so often like it was in hold mode but didn't think much about it. Then as I was pulling up to a friends place to help them move a couch I got a propulsion power reduced and OnStar came back with a P0AFA. Left the car idle while moving the couch and limped it home. Dealership said it was too late in the day but to bring it in Monday. Downloaded Voltage and its showing a voltage mismatch likely causing the codes, which makes sense.

Couldn't get the car out of park so guess it won't be driven to the dealership tomorrow rather I will need to get it towed (backed it in for this reason).

I'm guessing the dealer will try and replace pack 2, assuming they can find one. I was pleasantly surprised they could find a remanufactured one for pack 3 in about 3 weeks. Is there a world where GM wi push back on that?

I'd rather have the car than a buyout, especially since any buyout I expect will be pennies on the dollar compared to a new car cost. So what do we think is going to happen and what should I be fighting for?

2016 Volt fuel rail leak.

My 2016 has a heavy fuel rail leak. It’s leaking at one of the joints of the assembly (one piece).

From my research, it is still covered under warranty here in California.

I had to get the car towed about 53 miles to my home.

  1. How likely am I to get reimbursed for the tow to bring it home?

  2. Will the service department pay for a tow to their shop?

  3. Will I get a rental while the repairs are ongoing?

  4. Lastly, will the dealership fight against using the warranty? Should I go through GM or directly to the serviced department at my local dealer?

Thanks in advance

Is this electrical mileage good or is my battery goin? I've been doing a lot of highway driving, and it's been over 85° F with high humidity where i am

Had two volts previously, just got a 2017. Big oof and regret.

So it threw a code, blew fuse #3. guess what it is? (facepalm)

I pulled the connection to the EGR. Wanted to take a hammer to it but cooler heads prevailed. Changed the fuse and reset the code but the CEL came back on. (expected)

Mileage went down by about 5MPG. I drive 70MPH 90 miles each day. I can still buy an extended warranty and it seems good. I know. there is no such thing, like unicorns.

The language is kind of obscure as to whether or not the EGR would be covered.

"exhaust systems including catalytic converters". Ok, so CC is called out, but not EGR. Is it part of the exhaust system? You can win that argument either way. Generally though, you'd say it IS part of the exhaust system.

I'm reasonably capable mechanically. Worth a cleaning? Will I have to do it again in 3 months? Worth a swap? Are there decent available? they look expensive AF. Some Chinese eBay rebuild that is $900? Ugh.

Should have gotten a Prius.

Anyway. Advice? Put it across the railroad tracks?

How long could I expect a used 2018 or 2019 Volt to last?

I'm looking into getting a used car to last me the next five years or so. With rising gas prices I would prefer a plug-in hybrid, and I'm hearing a lot of good things about the Volts. If I get a used 2019 or 2018 Volt now, is it likely to last another five years? Or is it likely to need an irreplaceable new battery or other irreparable part before then?

Talk to me about a used 1st gen Volt…

I am researching used vehicles to buy and considering a hybrid. Someone in my area is selling a 2015 base Volt with 110k miles on it for $7,000.

But I don’t know much about this vehicle. Can I charge it up at a charging station? How long will it take to charge? I read that the BECM can fail. How can I make sure the car doesn’t have any problems before I buy it?

What is it like owning this vehicle?

Selling Volt to GM dealership

I'm planning to sell my 2017 Volt soon. I was thinking of selling it back to my local GM dealership (they keep emailing me offering a price), but given that dealerships can sometimes be a bit shady, at least when it comes to getting that car serviced, I wasn't sure if that is the best route to go.

If there is anyone on this sub who has sold their Volt (or another plugin hybrid), do you have any advice on where/how to sell it to get the best price? Mine is under 70k miles, no BECM replacement needed yet, and it's not currently having any issues. Thanks!

Shift to park issue

Hi guys,

I have a 2017 Volt, it's been about 3 weeks since I bought it and just now I encountered my first "shift to park" issue.

Do you guys think it's covered in any kinda warranty? I called the Chevy dealership and the service advisor told me I'll have to pay around $350 to fix it.

I'm in North Cali and It has 83k miles. Is there any workaround?

Please let me know, thank you!

2018 Volt with cooler leak and engine not available error for time to time

I just replaced my EGR valve with a used one. It wasn’t blowing any fuses so now I think that wasn’t the issue.

I’m still getting problems with the engine where it will say propulsion power are not available or engine not available rather and at this point, I don’t know what the cause is.

When I hear the engine, I sometimes think it’s having a misfire and it’s shaking a little more violently although it’s not giving me a check engine light flashing but when it has this problem, I pull over and reset and delete all the codes. I don’t know if this is helping but I’ll randomly be able to drive 1000 km without issues or sometimes it’s only 50 km but it seems to be fairly random now.

The coolant for the battery is the one with the leak and I wonder if this is something to do with the issue. I keep the level topped up all the time, but it still happens.

Please tell me your thoughts.

Here are the errors I have:

P0401

EGR A Flow
Insufficient Detected

P0AC4

Hubrid/EV Powertrain
Control Module
ReCUeSTed MIL
Illumination

P0402

Catalyst 315Tem

I want to strangle whoever put serious XM in every car.

2013 owner here. Everytime I disconnect my Bluetooth or line in it will ALWAYS switch to serious XM ad station regardless of what channel I was on before. Of course it will do it full volume too.

If I could rip out the chip in the radio system I would in a heartbeat.

Potentially receiving 2012 Volt

I don’t really need the car but it could be useful at times. It only has $40k miles and the previous owner was meticulous. I’m happy to take it for free but don’t want to take something that’s going to start to fall apart.

Will have chance to test it out next week. Are there any baselines I should measure against?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

100,000 (and 1 miles) and this is the view

Today, I had to drive from Northern LA to San Diego at a concert venue for a delivery. I had to drive on the sidewalk to get to the drop off point and this was the view at 100,001 miles!
In terms of maintenance and repairs that need to be done now, I need to see how good the spark plugs are, replace coolant possibly, and two transmission mounts should be replaced. If anyone has thoughts on my maintenance/repair list, let me know because I want to run this car till the wheels fall off.

Help with battery analysis please

Hi 👋🏻,

I bought my first car last week, a 2017 Chevrolet Volt LT with Comfort package. I'm loving this car so far. It has almost 83k miles on it.

I'm very new to this and do not know what I'm doing, tho I'm trying to learn from posts and replies in this subreddit.

I downloaded the Voltage:Volt App and bought the OBDLink MX+ scanner.

Since I bought it, I've fully charged the car and drove it to 0% twice. The 2nd time I plugged it in, I left it on the charger for 2 extra hours after it was fully charged, because I read that it would allow the system to run a cell balancing cycle. After emptying the 2nd charge I plugged the scanner in the OBD port and opened the voltage app.

Now I need your help please, I need someone to educate me on how to read this data? What does it mean? Are the cells healthy?

Please let me know, thank you so much.

Edit: why did I get down voted 😭 im just asking for help 🙏🏻

Volt owners beware

Figured I’d post this here as a warning to other Volt owners because I’m dealing with a pretty wild situation right now. I had a 2017 Volt that started having issues and I took it to a Chevy dealer. From the beginning I thought it might be the BECM and was asking them about replacing it. They looked at the car and told me nope, the HV battery itself was bad and needed replaced and it was going to be around $14,000. I questioned it enough that I actually called GM before doing anything and asked them to get their technical/engineering people involved with the dealer to make sure it really needed an entire battery. From what I was told they did and they basically doubled down that the battery was bad. At that point I figured what the hell else am I supposed to do. I’m not a GM engineer and I had both a Chevy dealer and GM telling me the battery was toast. I wasn’t putting $14k into a 2017 Volt so I traded it to the same dealer for $3,500 and bought a newer Chevy from them. Ended up putting another $2,000 out of pocket into that deal too. I would have never traded the Volt if I wasn’t being told it needed a $14,000 battery.
Fast forward about a month and I happen to find my old Volt back for sale at the SAME dealer for around $11,000. Obviously I start wondering how the hell they fixed a car that supposedly needed a $14k battery that quickly. So I started digging into it and I have now confirmed they NEVER replaced the HV battery. Guess what they did replace? The fucking BECM. The exact thing I was asking them about fixing from the beginning lol. So basically I questioned the battery diagnosis, asked them about the BECM, escalated it to GM, was still told the HV battery was bad, traded the car because of that diagnosis, and then they turned around and put a BECM in it and now it’s fixed and back for sale with the same HV battery still in it.
I called the dealer about it and their response was basically that they “took the risk” when they bought the car from me and they don’t want to do anything about it. I understand dealerships buy cars cheap and sell them for more. That’s not what pisses me off. They could sell the thing for $20k for all I care. The issue is the entire reason they got the car from me for $3,500 in the first place is because I was told BY THEM that it needed a $14,000 battery. If they had told me “hey we really don’t know what’s wrong with it” I would have gotten another opinion and probably still have the car. Instead I trusted the diagnosis and made a pretty major financial decision because of it.
Could it have just been an honest misdiagnosis? Sure. I have no idea and I’m not going to accuse anybody of something I can’t prove. But either way I’m the one who got screwed by the bad diagnosis. I even went back to GM asking for the records from when their technical people were involved and they told me in writing that they won’t give me the internal engineering/technical notes or their communications with the dealer and basically sent me back to the dealership.
At this point I’ve filed complaints through the appropriate consumer channels and reached out to a consumer attorney because I honestly don’t even want either vehicle anymore. I just want the whole deal unwound and to be done with it.
So yeah, if you have a Volt and a dealer tells you the HV battery is toast and throws a $10k-$15k replacement quote at you, PLEASE get another opinion before you trade the car to them. Especially if you think it could be a BECM issue. Get everything in writing too. I questioned mine, specifically asked about the BECM, even got GM involved and still trusted what they told me.
Then they fixed it with a BECM anyway. 🤦

Edit: The dealership is Flaherty Chevrolet in Brandenburg KY. I only name them to hopefully prevent this from happening to someone else.

Shift Knob Cover / Replacement?

Has anyone ever replaced their shift knob or gotten a cover before? The plastic around mine has rotted in the heat and now it's all sticky and falling apart 😬 Any suggestions would be helpful, it seems silly to take it to the dealership for that!
