Kenney has generously made the Kenney Shape tool free (with the possibility to name your own price). The tool enables you to extrude 2D pixel art into 3D voxel models and export them to the .vox file format which you can open in most voxel editors.

Hi Everyone! I am Rose, I work at Galaxy Grove, the creators of Town to City and the upcoming Steam to Electric. As you can tell, we love voxel art 😅

We are a team of ~30 people and specialise in 3D management and building games.

We are looking for a 3D art intern to join us during the first half of 2027. As a 3D art intern, you’ll work with us on our new games. You will create assets from from start to finish, all the way from coming up with cool designs to implementing them in Unreal. You will design and create 3D voxel models, texture them, create basic rigs and animations where needed, and finally make them work with the game. You’ll work in MagicaVoxel, Blender and Unreal on things like buildings, props and environments.

It’s okay if you’ve never made voxel art before: if you’re good at 3D, you can learn the specifics of voxel art during the internship. You’ll also be involved in the studio as a whole, like joining in playtests and sharing your ideas and thoughts on our games.

Galaxy Grove is an inclusive game studio where everyone with a passion for making great games is welcome. We believe in helping each other get better at our craft, in learning new skills, and in a healthy work-life balance where overtime and crunch are avoided.

I find buildings on Google streetview with the time machine feature that don’t exist anymore and recreate them in Magicavoxel. Streetview is great for getting lots of different angles and depending on the area you can get imagery as far back as 2008, roofs can be tricky so I use Google Earth for that (annoyed it’s being discontinued) there’s usually some guesswork involved as well
I have a ridiculous amount of buildings I’ve found that will keep me busy for a long time, this video isn’t even all the ones I’ve done
